How do you play Minecraft Dungeons II? Instead of picking a class, you pick gear: you build your hero from items in 12 slots, from weapons to charms. You fight in melee and at range, jump and dodge roll, and the town of Brave Haven has a Blacksmith and an Enchantsmith waiting for you. You travel across a connected world with no loading screens. Below we break down these systems and give you 8 tips to start with.

This guide is based on material from Mojang, Xbox Wire posts and reviews, so it covers the game's systems rather than hands-on impressions. You'll find the release date, prices and platforms in a separate Minecraft Dungeons 2 guide.

What is Minecraft Dungeons 2 about?

Minecraft Dungeons 2 is an action RPG (ARPG) and a sequel to the original Minecraft Dungeons. This time the threat is the Illager High Council, which includes the Prime Enchanter, the Supreme Evoker and the Grand Illusioner. The council wields a new power and carries out coordinated attacks across the Overworld (minecraft.net).

According to Xbox Wire, you'll realize right at the start of the adventure that something is off, and it has to do with the Sift dimension. Minecraft.net also names the heroes: Valorie, Kellen, Ren and Flores.

You can play solo or in a squad of up to 4 players: on one screen, online, or in a mixed mode where a couch co-op squad opens a session for players joining remotely (minecraft.net). You can put together a private squad using an 8-character code.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 gear: 12 slots instead of classes

There are no character classes: according to Xbox Wire, your hero is shaped by the gear you choose yourself. The number of combat slots has grown from 6 in the first game to 12 (minecraft.net). Armor is no longer a single item, and charms are a completely new category. If you want to compare these changes with the first game, check out our guide to the first Minecraft Dungeons.

SlotCountDescription
Weapons21 melee and 1 ranged, with unlimited ammo
Artifacts3active abilities or spells
Armor4helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots separately
Charms3passive bonuses and more character build options

Items can have random effects, so pieces of the same type can differ from one another (minecraft.net).

On top of the dodge roll, there's now a jump, which you can also use in combat to strike from above (minecraft.net). As items pile up, the Effects and Enchantments menu helps out: it collects all the effects from your weapons, armor and charms in a single list (Xbox Wire).

The game has difficulty levels: gram.pl counts them as a strength, while PPE.pl criticizes their balance.

Brave Haven: the Blacksmith and the Enchantsmith

Brave Haven is the town that serves as your hub. The Blacksmith and the Enchantsmith are waiting there. According to Xbox Wire, the Blacksmith upgrades your gear and lets you re-roll a boost, while the Enchantsmith works with Enchant Books and uses the Soul Corrupted currency.

Xbox Wire described both characters in August, and we've collected the rest of the news from gamescom 2026 in a separate article.

Emeralds are a currency too. According to a Steam announcement, a server-side update on October 1, 2026 raised their cap from 9,999 to 99,999 and didn't require downloading a new version of the game (as of October 7, 2026).

The world and fast travel

The game's world forms a single whole, and loading screens don't interrupt your travels. Xbox Wire lists the Howling Woods, Frozen Highlands and Rainy Plains regions in it, as well as the Deep Dark. We described how the game launched in our article on the release, the connected world and the Sift dimension.

According to Xbox Wire, these help you get around the world:

  • Minecart Stations,
  • Teleport Statues,
  • the Guidance Trail,
  • Respawn Shrines.

Bosses, rifts and Sift

The dungeon in the June demo ended with a fight against the Twisted Warden boss. It's a bigger and exceptionally strong version of the Warden (Xbox Wire). Around gamescom 2026, the Copper Monstrosity boss was shown off.

In the northern part of the Howling Woods, the Witch boss is waiting. The nearby Boss Totem lets you start the fight over, and Xbox Wire even mentions a 10th attempt at the loot from this boss.

The game world also has Storm Towers, which the GamesRadar+ review mentions. GameSpot lists rifts: together with side quests, you have to complete them to finish the game at 100%.

According to Xbox Wire, Sift is the first new dimension in Minecraft in over 14 years. It debuts in Dungeons II and will come to Java and Bedrock in 2027. We covered the details in a news post about how the new Sift dimension is coming to Minecraft.

How to play Minecraft Dungeons 2: 8 tips to start with

Every tip comes from mechanics described by Mojang, Xbox Wire or reviewers.

  1. Think in sets, not classes. Judge new loot together with what you're wearing in your other slots, because your whole loadout makes the hero.
  2. Check the effects menu after swapping gear. According to GamesRadar+, you get almost too many items, so you often have to check your inventory. The Effects and Enchantments menu shows all effects at once, so it's the easiest place to compare a new set with the previous one.
  3. Read item descriptions. The same type of weapon or armor can have different random effects, so don't write off a find just because it looks like a duplicate.
  4. Don't hold back on shooting. Ammo for ranged weapons is unlimited and replenishes on its own over time, so you don't need to save it.
  5. Attack with a jump, too. The dodge roll is for evading, while the jump lets you strike from above, so you have both moves available in a fight.
  6. Do the side quests. GameSpot considers them worth your time, because they let you collect all the charms and Enchant Books, and the Enchantsmith in Brave Haven works with the latter.
  7. Keep going back to the Witch boss. The Boss Totem restarts the fight, so you can battle for the loot many times.
  8. Think carefully about your mode. Online and offline modes are separate (minecraft.net), and according to konsolowe.info, the split of characters between them is permanent. If you plan to play with friends over the internet, start with online mode. On consoles, that kind of co-op requires a paid platform subscription. We write more in our article on multiplayer, co-op and crossplay.
