How /summon works
Command syntax
/summon <entity> [x] [y] [z] [nbt]: summons an entity at the given position with optional NBT data. Without a position it summons at the player's location.
Relative position (~)
Using ~ means the player's position. ~5 is 5 blocks from the player, ~-3 is 3 blocks in the opposite direction. You can mix it with absolute values.
NBT data
NBT (Named Binary Tag) lets you customize entities: give them a name, turn off their AI, make them invulnerable, and even set their equipment and potion effects.
Frequently asked questions
Can I summon a boss (the Wither, the Ender Dragon)?
Yes. You can summon the Wither with /summon minecraft:wither, but be careful: the Wither starts destroying its surroundings right away. The Ender Dragon can be summoned too, but it only behaves properly in the End dimension.
What does the NoAI option do?
NoAI:1b turns off the mob's AI entirely. The mob will not move, attack or react to its surroundings. Useful for decorative NPCs on adventure maps.
Does /summon work in Bedrock Edition?
Yes, but Bedrock Edition does not handle NBT data in commands the same way Java does. This generator produces Java Edition syntax (1.13+). Some options (such as CustomName in NBT) may not work in Bedrock.
How do I give a mob a colored name?
Use the "Custom name" field and pick a color from the dropdown. The generator automatically uses the JSON text component format, which supports the 16 Minecraft colors.
