How to install a map in Minecraft

Java Edition

  1. Download the map (a .zip file) from a trusted source (e.g. Planet Minecraft, CurseForge, Minecraft Maps).
  2. Unzip the archive. Inside you will find a folder with a level.dat file.
  3. Copy the whole folder to .minecraft/saves/ (on Windows: %appdata%/.minecraft/saves/).
  4. Launch Minecraft and open "Singleplayer". The map will show up in the world list.
  5. If the map needs a resource pack, put it in .minecraft/resourcepacks/ and activate it in the settings.

Bedrock Edition

  1. Download the .mcworld file, which is the native Bedrock map format.
  2. Double-click the file or open it through Minecraft. The game imports the map automatically.
  3. Alternatively, unzip the .mcworld file (it is a ZIP archive) and copy the contents to games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds/.

Always check the required game version. Running a map on a newer version can cause errors, and on an older version it will not work at all. If a map needs a specific version, create a matching profile in the Minecraft Launcher.

Where to find Minecraft maps

The best sources of Minecraft community maps:

  • Planet Minecraft: the largest map database, with community ratings and comments.
  • CurseForge: a popular platform for mods and maps, easy to use with launchers.
  • Minecraft Maps: a dedicated site with thousands of maps and search filters.
  • MCPEDL: the best source of maps for Bedrock Edition.
  • Minecraft Marketplace: Mojang's official store with professional maps (Bedrock).
  • Reddit r/Minecraft: a community that shares its own maps and discoveries.

Avoid sites that ask for "survey verification" or send you through too many redirects, because these are often scams. Download maps only from trusted sources and never run .exe or .jar files that pose as maps.

Frequently asked questions

Do Java Edition maps work on Bedrock?

Not directly. World formats differ between the editions. Conversion tools exist (e.g. Chunker, MCC Toolchest), but the result is not always perfect, and maps with command blocks in particular may not work correctly after conversion.

Can I play a map that uses mods?

It depends on the map. Some need specific mods (the author lists them), others run on plain Minecraft. Running a map with mods it does not require can cause conflicts and crashes.

The map won't load. What can I do?

Check that you are using the right Minecraft version. Make sure the map folder contains the level.dat file directly in its root (not in a subfolder). If the map needs a resource pack, install it before you launch the game.

Can I edit a downloaded map?

Yes, most maps can be edited in Creative mode. For advanced terrain and structure editing you can also use tools such as MCEdit or Amulet, or WorldEdit commands.
