Enchantments in Minecraft
An encyclopedia of Minecraft enchantments.
Enchantments are the system for upgrading items in Minecraft. They make your sword deal more damage, your armor protect you from fire, and your pickaxe yield more resources. The enchanting system matters at every stage of the game, from your first nights in Survival to fighting the Ender Dragon and exploring End Cities.
On this page we cover the 34 most commonly used enchantments, grouped by item category: weapons (swords, axes), the mace, armor (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots), tools (pickaxes, shovels, axes), the bow, and universal enchantments that work on every type of item. Some enchantments exclude each other, for example you can't have Fortune and Silk Touch on the same pickaxe.
You can apply enchantments in three ways: with an enchanting table for experience and lapis lazuli, with an anvil by combining an item with an enchanted book, or by finding ready-made enchanted items in structure chests, from villagers and while fishing. Each method has its advantages: the enchanting table is the cheapest, the anvil gives you full control, and loot and trading let you get treasure enchantments like Mending or Frost Walker.
Below you'll find a list of enchantments with descriptions, levels, compatibility and usage strategies. Click an enchantment to read its detailed guide. If you want a single table with everything at once, see the roundup of all enchantments in Minecraft, which lists every name in table form.
Weapon enchantments
7 enchantmentsOffensive enchantments for swords and axes. They increase damage, add status effects and improve the drops from the mobs you kill. Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods exclude each other, so you can only have one of them on a weapon.

Smite
Extra damage against the undead: zombies, skeletons, phantoms, withers and drowned.
Bane of Arthropods

Mace enchantments
3 enchantmentsThe mace arrived in the game in update 1.21 and has its own separate set of enchantments that you can't put on a sword or an axe. Damage depends on how far you fall, so Density and Wind Burst work together: one scales the hit, the other launches you back up for the next one.
Density
Increases smash attack damage by 0.5 per block fallen and per enchantment level. The foundation of a mace build.
Breach
Reduces the effectiveness of the target's armor by 15% per level. A pick for PvP, where your opponent wears full netherite.
Wind Burst
After a successful smash attack, launches you upward so you can chain more hits. A treasure enchantment from Trial Chambers.
Armor enchantments
12 enchantmentsDefensive enchantments for armor pieces. The special boots enchantments (Feather Falling, Depth Strider, Frost Walker) are key for exploration.

Fire Protection

Tool enchantments
3 enchantmentsUtility enchantments for mining tools: pickaxes, shovels, axes and hoes. Fortune and Silk Touch exclude each other: Fortune increases the amount of drops, while Silk Touch collects a block in its original form. Efficiency V lets you break most blocks almost instantly.

Bow enchantments
5 enchantmentsEnchantments for bows that increase damage and add special effects to arrows. Infinity and Mending exclude each other, so you have to choose between unlimited ammo and everlasting durability. Power V with Flame is the most powerful ranged combination in the game.
Power
Increases the damage of arrows fired from a bow. The equivalent of Sharpness for ranged weapons.
Punch
Increases arrow knockback. Useful for pushing enemies off cliffs and bridges. Not to be confused with Knockback on a sword or Wind Burst on a mace.
Flame

Universal enchantments
4 enchantmentsEnchantments that work on every type of item. Unbreaking and Mending are the two most important enchantments in the game, and together they make items practically eternal. The curses (Vanishing and Binding) are negative enchantments that a grindstone can't remove.
Unbreaking
Reduces the chance of losing durability. Level III extends an item's lifespan up to four times.
Mending
Uses the XP you collect to repair the item. The most valuable enchantment in the game, it makes items last forever.
Curse of Vanishing
The item disappears when you die instead of dropping on the ground. A negative enchantment that can't be removed.
Curse of Binding
Once equipped, you can't take the item off until you die or it breaks. A negative enchantment.
