Minecraft server plugins
A catalog of the 20 most important server plugins in 2026, with commands, configs and installation guides.
Running a Minecraft server and looking for plugins to make the job easier? Below are 20 plugins the minecraft.pl editors consider the foundation of any server. They range from basic tools like EssentialsX (teleportation, economy, kits), through land protection (WorldGuard, GriefPrevention) and the permissions system (LuckPerms), to advanced building tools (WorldEdit, FAWE).
Every plugin has its own page with a full description, command list, permissions, a sample configuration and install instructions. Click a plugin's name to open the details. Looking for server guides? Head to the Minecraft servers section, with step-by-step setup guides.
Essential tools
EssentialsX
The basic set of 100+ server commands: teleportation, economy, kits, warps, mail, AFK and a lot more. A must-have plugin on every server.
CMI
A paid all-in-one plugin with 270+ commands. It replaces EssentialsX, hologram, leaderboard and portal plugins, kits and many others.
SkinsRestorer
Changes skins on offline-mode servers. Players can set any skin with the /skin command, even without a paid Minecraft account.
Protection and security
WorldGuard
A region protection system that integrates with WorldEdit. Define zones, set flags (PvP, explosions, building) and protect spawn from griefing.
GriefPrevention
A claim system built around the golden shovel. Players protect their own builds without any admin involvement. Claim blocks are allocated automatically.
CoreProtect
Logs every player interaction with blocks. See who broke a block (/co inspect) and roll back changes (/co rollback). Essential on any public server.
Administration and permissions
Building and editing
WorldEdit
A powerful tool for mass terrain editing. Select regions, then fill, replace, copy and paste thousands of blocks with a single command.
FastAsyncWorldEdit
An asynchronous fork of WorldEdit. Block operations don't block the server's main thread, which cuts lag during large edits.
RPG and NPCs
Citizens
Create NPCs (non-player characters) that look like players, with dialogue, movement paths and quest integration. The foundation of RPG servers.
MythicMobs
Create your own custom mobs with unique abilities, drops, boss bars and mechanics. The engine behind RPG and dungeon servers.
APIs and libraries
Vault
An API that links economy, permissions and chat plugins. It adds no features of its own, but dozens of other plugins require it as an intermediate layer.
PlaceholderAPI
A system of dynamic variables (placeholders) used by leaderboards, chat, holograms, TAB, scoreboards and dozens of other plugins.
ProtocolLib
A library for modifying Minecraft network packets. Many plugins require it to create holograms, NPCs, tab lists and visual effects.
Maps and worlds
Dynmap
An interactive map of your server world, viewable in a web browser. Real-time rendering, player positions, markers and regions.
Multiverse-Core
Manage multiple worlds on one server. Create, delete, import and teleport between worlds. A long-time standard.
Chat and interface
Performance
Compatibility
Authentication

How to choose plugins for your server
SMP (survival) server
Minimum: EssentialsX (commands), LuckPerms (ranks), GriefPrevention (protection), CoreProtect (logs). Add Vault as the API and Dynmap for a map in the browser.
Creative server
FAWE is the core building tool. Add WorldGuard to protect builds, Multiverse for multiple worlds and LuckPerms for builder ranks.
RPG / dungeon server
MythicMobs (custom mobs), Citizens + Denizen (NPCs and quests), WorldEdit (map building). Plus the standard set: EssentialsX, LuckPerms, Vault.
Server network (proxy)
On the proxy (Velocity/BungeeCord): ViaVersion (version compatibility). On the backends: LuckPerms with MySQL (rank syncing), TAB (tab list), SkinsRestorer.
Installing plugins step by step
Check the dependencies
Some plugins need other plugins to work. For example, WorldGuard requires WorldEdit and CMI requires CMILib. Check the "Dependencies" section on the plugin's page.
Drop the .jar file into the plugins/ folder
Copy the downloaded .jar file into the plugins/ folder in your server directory. Don't unpack the .jar itself. If the plugin comes in a .zip archive, extract it and copy the .jar from inside into plugins/.
Restart the server
Run the /stop command and start the server again. Some plugins survive /reload, but a full restart is safer and avoids memory leaks. After startup, check the console logs for errors.
Configure the plugin
After the first launch the plugin generates a config file (usually config.yml) in the plugins/PluginName/ folder. Edit the settings, save the file, then use the plugin's reload command (for example /plugin reload) or restart the server.
Frequently asked questions
Do plugins work on Minecraft Bedrock?
No. The plugins in this catalog run on Java Edition servers (Spigot, Paper, Purpur). Bedrock Edition uses a different system: behavior packs and add-ons. If you want Java and Bedrock players on the same server, check out Geyser.
Paper or Spigot? Which one should run your plugins?
Paper. It's a Spigot fork with performance fixes, better APIs and faster security updates. Almost all Spigot plugins run on Paper unchanged. For more on choosing a server engine, see our server engine comparison.
How many plugins can I install on a server?
There's no hard limit. Servers with 50-80 plugins are the norm. Quality matters more than quantity: one badly written plugin can lag more than 30 good ones. Monitor TPS with the /tps command and use Spark for profiling if problems show up.
What is Vault and why do so many plugins require it?
Vault is an intermediary API that connects economy, permissions and chat plugins. It adds no features of its own, but it lets, say, a shop plugin read a balance from EssentialsX or check a rank from LuckPerms. Install it whenever any plugin lists Vault as a dependency.
Are paid plugins better than free ones?
Not always. Many of the best plugins are free and open source: LuckPerms, EssentialsX, WorldEdit, CoreProtect. Paid plugins like CMI can save time (one plugin instead of several), but free alternatives often offer the same capabilities.
A plugin doesn't work after installing. What should I do?
Check the server log in logs/latest.log. The most common causes: a missing dependency (such as Vault or WorldEdit), an incompatible Minecraft version, or an error in config.yml (invalid YAML). Most errors are described directly in the logs.
