Minecraft seeds: what they are and how to use them
A seed is a number that completely determines what a Minecraft world looks like. This guide explains what a seed is, how to enter one in Java and Bedrock Edition, and why the same seed can give a completely different world on different versions of the game.
What is a seed in Minecraft?
A seed is a number that determines how a Minecraft world is generated. When you create a new world, the game picks a random seed, but you can also type one in yourself. The same seed on the same game version and edition always generates an identical world: the same mountains, biomes, caves, villages and structures in exactly the same places. That is why players share seeds. Found an amazing world? Post the seed and anyone can recreate it.
A seed is an integer, so it can be positive, negative or zero. Java Edition uses 64-bit seeds, which gives more than 18 quintillion unique worlds. Bedrock Edition used 32-bit seeds for years, and since version 1.18.30 it accepts 64-bit seeds too. Both formats also accept text: the game turns the word you type into a number with the hashCode() function.
How do you enter a seed in Minecraft?
Java Edition
- In the main menu, click "Singleplayer".
- Click "Create New World".
- Click "More World Options...".
- In the "Seed for the World Generator" field, type or paste the seed number.
- Click "Create New World". Done.
Bedrock Edition (mobile, console, Windows 10/11)
- On the title screen, click "Play", then "Create New".
- Expand the "Advanced" or "World Options" section.
- Find the "Seed" field and type the number. The button next to the field opens a list of ready-made Bedrock seed templates.
- Confirm creating the world.
Minecraft server
In the server.properties file, change the level-seed= line to the seed
you want. A seed only affects newly generated chunks, so if the world already exists you have to
delete the world/ folder (or change level-name= to a new name) for the
seed to apply to the whole world.
How do you check the seed of your current world?
- Java Edition: Type
/seedin chat. On a server you need operator permissions. - Bedrock Edition: Open the world settings (the pencil icon next to the world name). The seed is shown in the world information section.
- F3 screen (Java): The seed isn't shown there for security reasons, so the
/seedcommand is the only way.
Java Edition vs. Bedrock Edition seeds
One important note: seeds are only partly interchangeable between editions. In current versions the same seed number gives the same terrain and biomes in Java Edition and in Bedrock Edition. Structures (for example villages and temples), trees, ores, some caves and mobs generate differently (minecraft.wiki).
Seeds also change between major updates. A seed that gave beautiful mountains in 1.17 can look completely different in 1.18, where terrain generation was completely overhauled. That is why we list the version each seed in our database was described for.
