Minecraft name generator: come up with a unique username
Picking a good Minecraft username is one of the first decisions you make as a player. Your name floats above your head on servers and shows up in the player list, in chat and on leaderboards. A good name is easy to remember, fits your play style and, most importantly, is available. Our Minecraft name generator helps you find the right one in a few seconds.
The tool generates 10 suggestions at a time in the category you choose. You can copy any name with one click and check whether it's free through the official Mojang API, without leaving the page. Optionally, turn on Minecraft words (Creeper, Ender, Redstone) and an automatic number suffix.
Minecraft username rules
Before you settle on a name, you need to know Mojang's official limits for player names:
- Length: minimum 3, maximum 16 characters
- Allowed characters: Latin letters (a-z, A-Z), digits (0-9) and the underscore (_)
- Not allowed: spaces, accented letters (é, ñ, ü and the like), special characters (@, #, !, - and so on)
- Letter case: a username isn't case sensitive when you log in, but the original spelling shows above the player's head
- Uniqueness: every name must be unique within Java Edition. Two players can't have the same username
- Changing it: in Java Edition you can change your username once every 30 days on minecraft.net
- Lock period: after you change your name, the old one is locked for 37 days, then it becomes free for others
How do the name categories work?
The generator offers 8 categories, each with its own set of words:
- Warrior - aggressive, combat-style names: Shadow, Storm, Iron, Blade, Fury. Ideal for PvP players and fans of fighting.
- Builder - words from the world of building: Craft, Block, Stone, Tower, Forge. For creators and architects.
- Mage - mystical and magical: Mystic, Arcane, Rune, Spell, Enchant. For fans of spells and RPGs.
- Animals - names inspired by animals: Wolf, Dragon, Eagle, Falcon, Cobra. Strong and easy to remember.
- Epic - big and impressive: Omega, Alpha, Apex, Titan, Zenith. For those who want to stand out on a server.
- Funny - light and humorous: Noob, Chunky, Crispy, Waffle, Nugget. They'll make your friends laugh in chat.
- Dark - dark and mysterious: Shadow, Void, Phantom, Wraith, Doom. For fans of horror and the Nether.
- Random - mixes words from all the categories. Use it when you want something completely unpredictable.
Minecraft words in your names
The "Minecraft words" option adds terms from the game to the generator's pool: Creeper, Ender, Nether, Redstone, Obsidian, Diamond, Emerald, Netherite, Piglin, Warden, Ghast and more. They are combined with the category words or with short tags (-MC, -GG, -XD, -Zilla), which gives you hybrids like CreeperBlade, EnderGG or RedstoneZilla.
Names like these make it obvious that you're a Minecraft player, and they stay easy to read and remember for everyone.
Checking availability: how does it work?
After you generate names, you can check each one individually (the "Check" button) or all at once (the "Check all with the Mojang API" button). The generator queries the official Mojang API at api.mojang.com/users/profiles/minecraft/:
- Available (green) - the name isn't assigned to any Java Edition account
- Taken (red) - the name is already used by another player
- Error (gray) - the API didn't respond (a request limit or a network problem)
The Mojang API has a request limit (about 600 per 10 minutes), so checking all 10 names takes about 12 seconds (1.2 seconds between requests). If you generate many sets in a row, you may see temporary errors. Wait a moment and try again.
Tips for choosing a great username
Aim for 6-12 characters
Almost every 3-5 character name is taken. Those are the "golden" usernames collectors look for. Names longer than 12 characters, on the other hand, are hard to remember and look odd above a character's head. The sweet spot is 6-12 characters.
Avoid strings of random letters
A name like "xXqWzRt42Xx" is hard to remember and looks auto-generated. It's better to join two meaningful words, such as IronFalcon or StormMage. That's exactly what our generator does.
Don't copy famous players
Names like "Dream123" or "Technoblade99" are obvious and can cause confusion. Come up with something original. The generator gives you hundreds of unique combinations.
Think about the future
In Java Edition you can change your name once every 30 days, but on many servers your name history is visible. Pick something that will still suit you in a year or two. Avoid references to a specific age, trends or memes that go out of date quickly.
Test the pronunciation
If you play with voice chat (Discord, TeamSpeak), your friends will call you by your username. Make sure it's easy to say. "ShadowKnight" is simple, "Xqzhyntl" is not.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Minecraft username rules?
A Minecraft username must be 3 to 16 characters long. Letters (a-z, A-Z), digits (0-9) and the underscore (_) are allowed. Spaces, accented letters and special characters are not allowed.
How do I check whether a Minecraft username is available?
Our generator checks availability through the official Mojang API. Click the Check button next to a name, or Check all to verify all 10 names at once. A name marked Available is not currently used by any Java Edition player.
Can I change my Minecraft username?
Yes, in Java Edition you can change your name on minecraft.net once every 30 days. In Bedrock Edition your name is tied to your Microsoft account (your Gamertag) and is changed in the Xbox settings. After a change, your old name is locked for 37 days.
How many characters can a Minecraft username have?
A Minecraft username needs at least 3 and at most 16 characters. Our generator builds names in that range automatically. Almost every short name (3-5 characters) is already taken, so aim for 6-12 characters.
Can I use accented letters in a Minecraft username?
No, Minecraft only allows plain ASCII letters (a-z, A-Z), digits and the underscore. Accented and non-Latin letters (like é, ñ, ü or ø) are not supported. Our generator builds every name from plain letters, so each result is valid.
What should I do if my dream username is taken?
Try adding digits at the end (for example DragonKnight77), use an underscore as a separator (Dark_Mage), or swap one part of the name for a synonym. Our generator has an option that adds digits automatically. You can also switch the category to Random for more unique combinations.
