Minecraft farms: a complete database of designs
This database covers 81 farms and automatic builds for Minecraft, with detailed descriptions, material lists, dimensions and tips. They range from simple food farms to advanced end-game mega projects.
What are farms in Minecraft?
Farms in Minecraft are builds designed to collect resources, food, experience (XP) and rare items automatically or semi-automatically. From simple wheat plots to multi-story mob towers, farms are the foundation of effective Survival play. They save you hours of gathering materials by hand: the machinery does it for you.
Every farm in our database comes with a detailed description, a list of required materials, build dimensions, estimated output and practical tips. The farms are split into 10 categories and rated for difficulty from 1 (very easy) to 5 (very hard).

How to choose the right farm
The right farm depends on where you are in the game and what you need. Early on, food and XP come first: build a wheat farm and a spawner farm. In the mid-game, an iron farm and a blaze farm (for potions) are key. In the end-game, build an enderman farm (XP), a guardian farm (prismarine) and a raid farm (totems).
Farm build priority (earliest first):
- Wheat/carrot farm (food)
- Zombie/skeleton spawner farm (XP + loot)
- Iron golem farm (iron)
- Sugar cane farm (paper → emeralds)
- Blaze farm (rods → potions)
- Creeper farm (gunpowder → TNT and rockets)
- Enderman farm in the End (XP)
- Raid farm (totems of undying)

Basic farm mechanics
Understanding a few basic Minecraft mechanics is key to building efficient farms:
Mob spawning
Hostile mobs spawn in the dark (light level 0 on Java, 7 and below on Bedrock) on full blocks. The player has to be within 24-128 blocks of the spawn point. Lighting up the surrounding area (128 blocks) eliminates competing spawns and boosts the farm's output. Dungeon spawners activate within 16 blocks.
Water channels
Water flows 8 blocks from the source. A stream of water carries mobs and items in the direction of flow. Water doesn't flow in the Nether (it evaporates immediately). Signs, open trapdoors and doors block water but not mobs, which is useful for building traps.
Hoppers
A hopper collects items that fall onto it and moves them into a connected container (chest, furnace, dispenser). A hopper has 5 slots and moves 1 item every 0.4 seconds (2.5 items/s). A redstone comparator measures how full the hopper is, which is key for item sorters.
Observers
An observer detects a state change in the block in front of it (a plant growing, a fruit appearing, water turning to ice) and sends a redstone pulse. It's the heart of most automatic farms: it detects the event and triggers the mechanism.
Frequently asked questions about farms
Are automatic farms allowed on servers?
Most Minecraft servers allow automatic farms, but some restrict lag-inducing farms (farms that cause lag). TNT dupers, gravity dupers and zero-tick farms may be banned. Always check the server rules before building a large farm.
Why isn't my farm working?
The most common causes: (1) the player is too far from the farm (a spawner needs 16 blocks, mobs spawn within 24-128), (2) too many mobs in the area (mob cap), (3) unlit caves use up the spawn limit, (4) differences between Java and Bedrock Edition, (5) the wrong Minecraft version (mechanics change between versions).
What's the difference between Java and Bedrock for farms?
Java and Bedrock have different spawning, redstone and mob behavior mechanics. Many Java farms don't work on Bedrock and vice versa. TNT dupers and gravity dupers work ONLY on Java. Bedrock has different mob caps, different piston behavior and a different tick rate. Always check which edition a farm design is for.
