Minecraft Launcher: what it is, how to download it and which one to use

Minecraft Launcher is the first program you open, before you ever see the game's main menu. It signs in your account, downloads the files, picks the version and starts Minecraft. This page covers all of it: what the launcher is, how to download the official one from Mojang, legal alternatives compared, what to do when the launcher won't work, whether you can play for free, and why you should stay away from cracked launchers. For a ranking with a verdict, see our roundup of the best Minecraft launchers.

What is Minecraft Launcher?

The Minecraft launcher is the app that acts as command central for the game. Before you see the main menu, the launcher downloads the game files, verifies your Microsoft account, loads the right version of Java and starts Minecraft with the settings you chose. Without it you can't play Java Edition, even if all the game files are already on your drive.

The launcher takes care of a few key jobs:

  • Signing in and checking your license through your Microsoft account.
  • Downloading and updating game versions, from the newest releases to old ones and snapshots.
  • Managing profiles: separate setups with different versions and settings.
  • Allocating RAM and setting Java arguments.

On Windows, Mojang's official launcher handles both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in one interface. On macOS and Linux it only runs Java Edition. It is a tool for launching a game you have bought, not a way around paying for it.

How to download the official launcher

Download the official Minecraft Launcher only from Mojang's own site: minecraft.net/download. It's the one safe source. Skip links from forums, ads and unknown sites, because they often lead to modified, unsafe files.

We have guides on minecraft.pl that walk you through the whole process:

Keep in mind

Downloading the launcher is free, but you need a purchased license to play. Check how much Minecraft costs and the legal ways to play for free (trials, demo mode, Minecraft Classic in the browser).

Requirements and versions

The official launcher is light, but the game itself has requirements. Before you start, check:

  • Minecraft system requirements: whether your computer can run the game and at what settings.
  • Operating system: Windows 10 (1709+), macOS 10.14.5+ or Debian-based Linux distributions (and Flatpak).
  • Java: newer versions of the game need a current Java, and the official launcher installs it for you automatically.

Legal alternative launchers

The official launcher is enough for most players, but if you play with mods, the legal alternatives are worth knowing. All of them need a purchased Microsoft account and are fully allowed:

  • Prism Launcher: an open-source launcher with isolated instances and built-in mod support. The standard in the modded Minecraft world.
  • CurseForge App: the easiest way to install modpacks with one click.

For a ranking with a "which one should I pick" verdict, see the best Minecraft launchers.

Launcher comparison table

All the launchers below are legal and need a purchased Microsoft account. They differ in how much they do for you when you play with mods.

LauncherBest forMods and modpacksSystem
Official (Mojang)Anyone who just wants to playManual, no built-in managerWindows, macOS, Linux
Prism LauncherPlayers with mods, several versions at onceIsolated instances, modpack importWindows, macOS, Linux
CurseForge AppOne-click modpacksLargest modpack libraryWindows, macOS
ATLauncherReady-made packs and custom setupsBuilt-in modpack catalogWindows, macOS, Linux

The official launcher is enough until you start juggling versions. Once you have two or three modpacks, separate instances in Prism or CurseForge save you a lot of headaches.

Minecraft Launcher for free: is it possible?

The launcher itself is free: you can download it from minecraft.net at no cost and without an account. The game is what costs money. For the launcher to start anything, the Microsoft account you sign in with needs a purchased Minecraft license.

Legal ways to play without spending money are limited, but they exist:

  • Demo mode: download the official launcher, sign in with a Microsoft account and play a limited version of Java Edition without buying the game.
  • Minecraft Classic: the 2009 version, free and playable right in your browser.
  • Free trials of Bedrock Edition, available on some mobile devices and consoles.

We cover each of these options in the Minecraft for free guide, and you'll find current prices in how much Minecraft costs. Anything that promises the "full game for free" outside this list is a cracked launcher. We explain why that's a bad idea below.

Launchers, mods and modpacks

The launcher is your gateway to mods. To play with modifications you need the right mod loader. The most popular options:

  • Minecraft Forge: the oldest and most popular loader, with a huge library of mods.
  • Fabric: a light, fast loader, ideal for performance mods.
  • NeoForge: a modern fork of Forge, increasingly common in new modpacks.
  • OptiFine: the classic mod for graphics, performance and shader support.

For an overview of all mods and loaders, see the Minecraft mods section. To change how your character looks, check the guide to Minecraft skins.

Launcher not working: what to do

Most launcher failures come down to four causes. Check them in this order:

  1. The launcher won't start or closes right away: run it as administrator, and if that doesn't help, reinstall it from minecraft.net. A corrupted config file is the most common culprit here.
  2. Microsoft account sign-in error: sign out, clear the sign-in data in the launcher and sign in again. Mojang accounts have been retired, so only Microsoft accounts work.
  3. The game won't start after you click Play: usually Java or your graphics drivers. Update the drivers and check the system requirements.
  4. Downloads get stuck: your antivirus or firewall is blocking the launcher. Add it to the exceptions before you start messing with your network.

If the problem is tied to a specific version or to mods, check the separate guides in the Minecraft mods section. If none of that helps, post on the minecraft.pl forum (in Polish) and include the exact error message.

Cracked launchers: why to avoid them

Plenty of unofficial launchers online advertise a way to play Minecraft "for free" without buying the game. These are so-called cracked (pirated) launchers. They let you start the game without a purchased license and without signing in with a real Microsoft account, which skips payment to Mojang. We explain what they are and why they are a real risk, but we don't link to them or give install instructions.

The most common dangers of cracked launchers:

  • Malware and adware: independent analyses have repeatedly found that popular cracked launchers contain advertising components and sometimes spyware.
  • Data theft: signing in through an unofficial launcher can leak your passwords and get your accounts taken over.
  • No updates or support: you won't get official fixes or technical help from Mojang.
  • Server bans: unlicensed ("non-premium") accounts are rejected by most multiplayer servers.
  • Piracy: playing without a purchased license violates Mojang's terms of use and is an illegal use of the game.
What to do instead of using a cracked launcher

The only safe, legal way is to buy the game on minecraft.net and download the official launcher. If you want to play without spending money, use the legal free options: the demo version, the trial mode or Minecraft Classic in the browser.

To help you spot the dangers, we wrote informational pages on the best-known unofficial launchers. These pages only describe the risks and contain no install instructions:

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is Minecraft Launcher?

Minecraft Launcher is Mojang's official program for starting the game. It handles signing in with your Microsoft account, downloading and updating the game files, choosing a version and managing profiles. Without a launcher you can't run Minecraft Java Edition.

Is Minecraft Launcher free?

The launcher itself is completely free to download from minecraft.net. You only pay for the Minecraft license. Downloading the launcher does not give you a free game: to play, you need an account that owns Minecraft.

How do I download the official Minecraft Launcher?

Download the official launcher only from minecraft.net/download. On our site, the Download section has a step-by-step guide for installing the game on Windows, macOS and Linux, for both Java and Bedrock.

Can I use a launcher other than the official one?

Yes. Legal, open-source launchers such as Prism Launcher and the CurseForge app are fully allowed as long as you sign in with a purchased Microsoft account. They make it easier to manage mods and modpacks. You'll find the full comparison in our launcher guide.

Are cracked launchers like TLauncher safe?

No. Cracked and unofficial launchers that let you play without a purchased license are widely considered unsafe: they can carry adware and spyware, Mojang does not support them, and the accounts get blocked on most servers. Stick to the official launcher or a legal alternative.

Minecraft Launcher won't start. What should I do?

The most common fixes: update your graphics drivers, check your Java version, reinstall the launcher from minecraft.net, temporarily turn off your antivirus, or run the launcher as administrator. We cover troubleshooting in detail in the full launcher guide.
