Snapshots (test versions)
Snapshots are test versions of Minecraft that contain new features still in development. Since the 26.1 cycle, regular snapshots carry the target version number in their name (e.g., 26.4-snapshot-3, 26.3-pre-1, 26.3-rc-1) instead of the weekly format like 25w46a. They may contain bugs, so we recommend backing up your world before launching one.
Beta versions
The Minecraft beta phase ran from December 2010 to November 2011. During that time the game received regular updates with key mechanics.
Alpha and older versions
The earliest versions of Minecraft, dating back to May 2009. They are available in the launcher once you enable historical versions in its settings.
