Minecraft Forge: installation and setup guide

Forge is the oldest and best-known mod loader for Minecraft Java Edition. For more than a decade it was the foundation of modding: thousands of mods were made for Forge alone. In 2023 the core team moved to NeoForge, but the original Forge is still alive. Older modpacks require it, and it gets builds for the latest game releases, including 26.3 (as of October 2026).

What Minecraft Forge is

Minecraft Forge (officially MinecraftForge) is a modding platform for Minecraft Java Edition that has been around since 2011. Forge provides an API (application programming interface) that lets mods change game mechanics without editing Minecraft's source code directly. Every mod in .jar format goes into the mods/ folder, and Forge loads them automatically when the game starts.

Over the years Forge built a huge ecosystem. Platforms such as CurseForge and Modrinth host tens of thousands of mods made for Forge. The big tech modpacks (Feed The Beast, All The Mods, Tekkit) were built on Forge, and those modpacks are what keep it popular.

Which Forge version is best

Which Forge version to pick depends on the mods you care about. Not every mod is available for every MC version. The key versions:

MC version Forge status When to choose it
26.3 66.0.x, no Recommended build The newest game version. As of October 2026: eight builds from 66.0.0 (September 19, 2026) to 66.0.9 (September 30, 2026). Before installing, check whether your mods already have a version for Forge 26.3.
26.2 Stable (Recommended 65.1.0) The latest build is 65.1.3. A good choice if your mods do not have a 26.3 version yet.
1.20.1 Stable The most mods and the best compatibility. The default choice for new players.
1.16.5 Legacy (stable) Plenty of modpacks (for example Vault Hunters). Still popular.
1.12.2 Legacy (stable) The golden age of modding: Thaumcraft, GregTech, IndustrialCraft. Choose it for those mods.
1.7.10 Legacy (stable) Classic modpacks. Only for nostalgia or specific mods.

Recommendation: pick the loader your mods require. Forge has versions for older releases (1.20.1 and earlier) as well as for the newest 26.2 and 26.3. Some mods and modpacks for 1.21.1, however, come out only for NeoForge (for example Create Aeronautics), and Sodium and Iris have versions for Fabric and NeoForge, not for Forge.

How to install Forge

Step 1: Check your Java

Forge needs Java. For MC 1.20.1 you need Java 17 or newer, and for 26.3 you need Java 25 (the official launcher downloads it by itself). Older versions (1.16.5, 1.12.2) only need Java 8. Get Java from adoptium.net.

Step 2: Download Forge

Go to files.minecraftforge.net. Pick your Minecraft version from the left menu, then download the installer (the "Installer" button). The page shows an ad: click "Skip" in the top right corner after a few seconds.

Step 3: Run the installer

Double-click the downloaded .jar file. Choose "Install client", make sure the path points to the .minecraft folder, and click OK. The installation downloads extra libraries, so it needs an internet connection. The whole process takes 1-3 minutes.

Step 4: Launch Minecraft with the Forge profile

A new "Forge" profile appears in the official Minecraft launcher. Select it and click "Play". The first launch takes longer because Forge sets up its environment. If you see a "Mods" button on the title screen, Forge is installed correctly.

Step 5: Add mods

Download mods in .jar format from Modrinth or CurseForge. Check that the mod is for the right MC version and for Forge (not Fabric). Copy the files to .minecraft/mods/. Where to find the folder: how to find the mods folder.

Popular mods available for Forge

Forge has the biggest mod library of any loader, especially in technology and magic:

  • Just Enough Items (JEI): a recipe viewer, practically mandatory (JEI guide)
  • Create: mechanical machines and automation (Create guide)
  • Applied Energistics 2: digital item storage
  • Mekanism: advanced technology, reactors, pipes
  • Botania: magic based on flowers and mana
  • Thermal Expansion: machines, pipes, power generators
  • Twilight Forest: a new dimension full of bosses and dungeons (Twilight Forest guide)
  • OptiFine: optimization and shaders (OptiFine guide)

Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge

Feature Forge Fabric NeoForge
Active development Yes (builds for 26.3 since September 2026) Yes Yes
Load time Slow (30-120s) Fast (5-15s) Medium (15-40s)
Tech mods The most (legacy) Fewer Growing (migration from Forge)
Performance mods Few The best (Sodium, Lithium) Good (official Sodium and Iris since 2024)
MC 26.3 (as of October 2026) Yes (66.0.x, no Recommended build) Yes Beta versions only
Modpacks Thousands (older ones) Growing New modpacks

In short: in 2026 Forge supports both older MC versions (1.20.1 and earlier, with mods that do not exist on other platforms) and the newest 26.2 and 26.3. For a new project, check which loader the mods you want to use are built for: Forge, Fabric (performance, lightweight) or NeoForge (a 2023 fork of Forge with a modern API).

Troubleshooting

Forge will not install

Check your Java version: run java -version in a terminal. Forge 1.20.1 needs Java 17+, Forge 1.16.5 needs Java 8+. If you downloaded 32-bit Java on a 64-bit system, replace it with the 64-bit version.

The game crashes on startup

Remove all mods from the mods/ folder and start Forge without mods. If it works, add mods one at a time to find the culprit. The most common cause: a mod for the wrong MC version, or for Fabric instead of Forge.

Mod says "requires Forge X.X.X or newer"

Install a newer Forge version for the same MC version. On files.minecraftforge.net you will see a "Recommended" (stable) version and a "Latest" version. Choose "Latest" if the mod requires a specific build.

Loading takes several minutes

Forge with a lot of mods (100+) needs time to load. Allocate more RAM (4-8 GB) with a JVM argument: -Xmx6G. Be patient: this is normal for modpacks with 200+ mods.

The "Mixin apply failed" error

Two mods modify the same part of the game code and conflict. Check the logs (.minecraft/logs/latest.log) to find out which mods clash, and remove one of them.

The future of Forge

In 2023 most of the main developers left Forge and founded NeoForge. The original Forge still releases versions for new game releases, though. As of October 2026: for 26.2 there is the 65.1.x line (Recommended 65.1.0, latest build 65.1.3), and for 26.3 the 66.0.x line (eight builds from September 19 to 30, 2026, no Recommended version yet). There are no Forge builds for the 26.4 snapshots. In practice this means:

  • Forge still works on MC 1.20.1 and older, so thousands of mods and modpacks for those versions remain available
  • Some new mods come out only for NeoForge or Fabric (for example Create Aeronautics only on NeoForge 1.21.1), so check the loader on the mod's page before you download
  • Moving a mod from Forge to NeoForge is often a matter of changing a few imports, and many authors have already done it
  • If you are just starting with mods, pick the mods or the modpack first, then the loader they require: Forge, NeoForge or Fabric
