Twilight Forest: a magical dimension full of bosses
A legendary adventure mod that adds a whole new dimension with unique bosses, dungeons, biomes and a Zelda-style progression system.
What is Twilight Forest?
Twilight Forest is one of the oldest and most legendary Minecraft mods. The first version appeared in 2011, and the mod is actively developed to this day. It adds a completely new dimension, the Twilight Forest, where an eternal twilight lights up giant trees, dark swamps, icy tundras and ruins inhabited by mighty bosses.
This is not just another dimension in the "Nether, but with different blocks" style. Twilight Forest has something most dimension mods lack: a progression system. You can't just fly to a random place and kill the toughest boss. The dimension locks you out of the next zones: to unlock a new biome, you first have to defeat the boss in the previous one. That gives the game an adventure structure that vanilla Minecraft never had.
The project is run by TeamTwilight, a team of modders (the original mod was created by Benimatic). The source code is public and the community is huge. Twilight Forest is a common inclusion in adventure-style modpacks such as All the Mods.
How to make a portal to the Twilight Forest
You create the portal to the Twilight Forest in a completely different way than a Nether portal. Forget about obsidian: here you need nature and a single diamond:
- Dig a 2x2 hole - one block deep. Preferably on grass, somewhere on the surface.
- Fill it with water - all 4 blocks must be water sources (not flowing water).
- Surround the edges with flowers - plant flowers, mushrooms, ferns or other plants on all the blocks directly adjacent to the pool. You need at least 12 plants around it (including the corners).
- Throw a diamond into the water - simply drop a diamond (Q key) over the pool. Lightning strikes, the water turns purple and the portal is ready.
After you go through the portal, you'll appear in a dense, twilit forest. It's worth building a base right away: the Twilight Forest has no day and night cycle, just an eternal twilight, but hostile mobs spawn normally.
Twilight Forest biomes
The Twilight Forest dimension is made up of over a dozen unique biomes, each with its own atmosphere, mobs and structures. Many biomes are locked at first: they are surrounded by a magical barrier (fire rain, thick fog, poison) that you remove by defeating the boss in the previous zone.
- Twilight Forest (main) - a dense forest with giant trees reaching the clouds. Full of wildlife: deer, ravens, fireflies and small hostile mobs. This is where you start your adventure.
- Dense Twilight Forest - an even denser variant. The trees grow so close together that their crowns form an almost solid canopy. It's dark and dangerous underneath.
- Mushroom Forest - a forest of giant mushrooms in the Nether style, but more fairy-tale. A great place for mushroom materials.
- Enchanted Forest - a magical forest with rainbow trees and a calm atmosphere. You can find rare crafting materials here.
- Swamp / Fire Swamp - dark swamps. The Fire Swamp is especially dangerous: full of lava, living flames and a hydra waiting in its lair.
- Dark Forest - a biome with such a dense canopy that it's practically dark in the middle of the day. The dark tower is found here.
- Snowy Forest / Glacier - an icy tundra with Yetis and the Snow Queen. Late-progression biomes: the toughest fights are waiting here.
- Highlands / Thornlands - upland terrain surrounded by thorny thickets. This is where the Final Castle is, the ultimate boss dungeon (still in development).
Bosses: the order of progression
The heart of Twilight Forest is its boss system. Each one is a unique fight with its own mechanics, and none of them is a typical "big mob with lots of HP". Here is the full order of progression:
Structures and dungeons
Besides the boss arenas, the Twilight Forest is filled with structures to explore:
- Hollow Hills - mounds full of ores and mob spawners. Small, medium and large variants. A great source of ores early in the adventure.
- Hedge Maze - a hedge labyrinth with traps and loot chests. Small, but atmospheric.
- Quest Grove - a peaceful place with a Questing Ram. Give it wool of every color and it rewards you.
- Druid Huts - small huts with druids.
Unique items and armor
Twilight Forest adds dozens of unique items that you won't find in any other mod:
- Naga Armor - armor made from Naga scales. The equivalent of diamond, but with extra knockback resistance.
- Fiery Armor / Fiery Sword - made from Fiery Ingots (Fiery Blood + Iron). The armor sets attackers on fire, and the sword sets the targets it hits on fire.
- Ironwood / Steeleaf / Knightmetal - three tiers of materials for weapons and armor. Knightmetal is the strongest, but you have to get far into the dimension to earn it.
- Lich Scepters - magic wands. The Zombie Scepter summons zombies, the Twilight Scepter fires magic bolts, and another scepter grants a temporary shield.
- Yeti Armor - furry armor that gives frost resistance, useful in the icy biomes.
- Magic Map / Maze Map - special maps that show the structures and biomes of the Twilight Forest and the layout of the maze.
How to install Twilight Forest
- Install NeoForge from neoforged.net (older Minecraft versions use Forge).
- Download Twilight Forest from CurseForge. Make sure the version matches your Minecraft and loader.
- On NeoForge you don't need any additional dependencies.
- Put the
.jarfile in the.minecraft/mods/folder. - Launch the game. Once it loads, make a 2x2 portal with water, flowers and a diamond, and head out on your adventure.
Server and modpack compatibility
Twilight Forest runs on servers without problems; it has to be installed on both the client and the server. Boss fights in multiplayer are even more fun than solo: the Hydra takes coordination, and the Lich is easier with someone who reflects projectiles.
The mod is one of the most common in modpacks. You'll find it in All the Mods and dozens of others. It is compatible with most popular mods, including JEI, Create and Waystones (teleportation between dimensions).
