Latest Minecraft Java Edition version

Java Edition 26.3

Update: Wilderness Bound (September 15, 2026) | Previous cycle: 1.21.x (Tricky Trials and drops)

Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 Wilderness Bound is the latest stable version of the game on PC (Windows, macOS, Linux), released on September 15, 2026. It's the third drop of 2026: it added the Dappled Forest with poplar trees, Abandoned Camps in 18 biomes, cushions you can sit on, straw beds, and wool and concrete stairs and slabs. We covered the details in the 26.3 release article.

Earlier drops this year were 26.2 Chaos Cubed (June 16, 2026) with Sulfur Caves and the Sulfur Cube, and 26.1 Tiny Takeover (March 24, 2026), the first Java version with year-based numbering. Since 26.1 the game requires Java 25. The snapshot channel is already testing 26.4: the first snapshot came out on September 22. 26.4 Snapshot 3 from October 6, 2026 added Ice Caves, and 26.4 Snapshot 4 from October 13 added brittle ice and jukebox playlists. If you play on a server, make sure the server and the client are on the same version.

Key changes in 26.3

  • The Dappled Forest near cold biomes, with poplars that have red, orange or yellow leaves, and shelf mushrooms
  • Abandoned Camps in 18 biomes, plus Explorer Maps that lead to camps and older structures
  • Cushions you can sit on, in 16 colors, and single-use straw beds that don't set a spawn point
  • Wool and concrete stairs and slabs in every color
  • A new algorithm for the Improved Transparency option, the game window moved to the SDL3 library, and invite codes for Realms

Latest Minecraft Bedrock Edition version

Bedrock Edition 26.52

Update: Wilderness Bound (26.50, September 15, 2026) | Platforms: Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS, Android

Bedrock Edition 26.52 is the latest stable version for Windows, consoles and mobile devices (as of October 2026). The Wilderness Bound drop reached Bedrock on September 15, 2026 as version 26.50, the same day as Java 26.3. Both editions get new content at the same time but use different version numbers: Bedrock numbers consecutive releases 26.0, 26.10, 26.20 and so on in steps of ten, and hotfixes change the last digit. Hotfix 26.51 came out on launch day, and 26.52 from September 25 fixed, among other things, the game failing to launch on some iOS devices and cushions disappearing. The next update, Bedrock 26.60, is announced for October 27, 2026: it brings a native version of the game for the Nintendo Switch 2, and from that version on Bedrock will connect to servers only through NetherNet.

Bedrock Edition updates automatically through the platform's store: the Microsoft Store on PC, the App Store on iOS, Google Play on Android, the Nintendo eShop on Switch and the PlayStation Store on PS4/PS5. If you don't see an update, check your automatic download settings.

Key changes in 26.50 and the hotfixes

  • The content of the Wilderness Bound drop: the Dappled Forest with poplars, Abandoned Camps, cushions, straw beds, and wool and concrete stairs and slabs
  • 26.51 (September 15, 2026): a fix for a crash when loading worlds with large structures made of fences, glass panes, iron bars or walls
  • 26.52 (September 25, 2026): the game launches again on some iOS devices, and online play on Nintendo Switch is more stable
  • 26.52: cushions placed in unloaded chunks no longer disappear, and achievements work again in older worlds with Marketplace add-ons

What the 1.21 cycle brought (2024-2025)

The 1.21 cycle ran from June 2024 to December 2025. It opened with the big Tricky Trials update (1.21), which added the Trial Chambers, the Breeze and the Vault system. After that Mojang released smaller drops: Bundles of Bravery (1.21.2), The Garden Awakens (1.21.4), Spring to Life (1.21.5), Chase the Skies (1.21.6), The Copper Age (1.21.9) and Mounts of Mayhem (1.21.11), the last Java version with 1.x numbering.

Key additions in the 1.21.x cycle

  • Trial Chambers - a new underground structure with procedurally generated rooms, traps and rewards in Vaults
  • Breeze - a new hostile mob in the Trial Chambers that attacks with gusts of wind
  • Vault - special reward blocks that each player can open only once
  • Mace - a new weapon: a mace that deals damage proportional to the height of the fall
  • Bundles - since 1.21.2 they hold up to one stack of different items in a single slot
  • Creaking - a tree mob from the Pale Garden biome that moves only when you aren't looking at it
  • Pale Garden - a new biome with pale trees and a gloomy atmosphere
  • Resin blocks - a new family of building blocks from The Garden Awakens drop (1.21.4)
  • Animal variants - warm and cold pigs, cows and chickens from the Spring to Life drop (1.21.5)
  • Happy Ghast - a flying mob from the Chase the Skies drop (1.21.6) that you can travel on
  • Copper Golem - a mob from The Copper Age drop (1.21.9), together with the copper chest and shelf
  • Spears and nautiluses - a new weapon and underwater mounts from the Mounts of Mayhem drop (1.21.11)

How to update Minecraft to the latest version

Java Edition (PC / Mac / Linux)

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher
  2. Make sure the selected installation is Latest release (not a snapshot)
  3. Click Play - the Launcher downloads the latest version automatically
  4. If you want to keep an older version (for example for a server), create a separate installation with a specific version number in the Installations tab

Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11)

  1. Open the Microsoft Store
  2. Go to Library (the icon in the bottom left corner)
  3. Click Get updates - if a new version is available, it will be downloaded
  4. Alternatively: turn on automatic updates in the Microsoft Store settings

Consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch)

On consoles, updates download automatically if the console is connected to the internet and automatic downloads are turned on. If the game doesn't update:

  • Xbox: My games & apps → highlight Minecraft → Menu button → Manage game and add-ons → Updates
  • PlayStation: Highlight Minecraft on the home screen or in your library → Options button → Check for Update
  • Switch: Highlight Minecraft → + or − button → Software Update → Via the Internet

Phone (iOS / Android)

  • iOS: App Store → your account (the profile picture at the top of the screen) → app updates → Update next to Minecraft
  • Android: Google Play → profile icon → Manage apps & device → See details (in the Updates available section) → Update next to Minecraft

Before updating, it's always worth making a backup of your world. On Java Edition, copy the save folder from .minecraft/saves/. On Bedrock Edition, export the world from inside the game (World settings → Export).

Snapshots and test versions

Before a new Minecraft version reaches the official release, Mojang publishes snapshots (Java Edition) and preview/beta versions (Bedrock Edition). These are test versions that let you check upcoming features before launch.

How to play snapshots (Java)

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher
  2. Go to the Installations tab
  3. Turn on the Snapshots option at the top
  4. Create a new installation with the latest snapshot
  5. Play, but not on your main world (snapshots can corrupt a save)

How to play the preview (Bedrock)

Minecraft Preview is a separate app available on Windows, Xbox and iOS. On Android, beta testing is available through Google Play (join the beta program). Preview installs alongside regular Minecraft and doesn't overwrite the stable version.

Snapshots usually appear weekly while work on a new update is under way. Between big updates there can be breaks lasting several weeks.

When is the next big Minecraft update?

The next drop, the fourth of 2026, has no name or official release date yet. Mojang showed it at Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026. In 2026, drops reached Java roughly every three months: in March (26.1), June (26.2) and September (26.3). According to GameSpot, if that rhythm holds, the next content will reach the game in December 2026, but Mojang has not confirmed it.

What we know about the upcoming changes

  • Ice Caves - an underground biome made of packed ice and calcite beneath cold biomes, with icicles and glowing ice crystals
  • Frostbite - a zombie variant that freezes you with a hit up close and throws ice balls from a distance
  • The freezing effect - together with a potion and arrows of freezing
  • Java Edition has been testing these features since 26.4 Snapshot 3 from October 6, 2026, and Bedrock since Preview 26.60.29 from September 30, 2026, with the experiment turned on
  • For 2027, Mojang announced a new dimension, Sift, for Java and Bedrock

Mojang's release pattern

Until 2024, Mojang released one big update a year (1.19 in 2022, 1.20 in 2023, 1.21 in 2024). Since autumn 2024, new content has arrived in smaller drops several times a year: in the 1.21 cycle these included Bundles of Bravery (1.21.2), The Garden Awakens (1.21.4) and Spring to Life (1.21.5), and in 2026 versions 26.1, 26.2 and 26.3. Test versions of 26.3 came out from June 23 to September 14, 2026: ten snapshots, three pre-releases and three release candidates.
