Warden

The warden is the ruthless guardian of the Deep Dark, added in the 1.19 Wild Update. With 500 health points and an attack that deals up to 45 damage, it is one of the most powerful mobs in the game, with as many HP as the Ender Dragon and the Wither combined. Mojang designed it so that players avoid it instead of fighting it.

Stats

The warden has 500 health points (250 hearts), as many as the Wither (300 HP) and the Ender Dragon (200 HP) put together. Its melee attack deals 45 damage on Hard difficulty. It is immune to knockback, lava and fire, and it stands 2.9 blocks tall.

The Deep Dark and sculk

The warden lives only in the Deep Dark biome, which generates deep underground, usually below Y=-20. You can recognize the biome by its dark blue sculk blocks. The key blocks are the Sculk Sensor (detects vibrations and sends a redstone signal), the Sculk Shrieker (summons a warden after repeated activations) and the Sculk Catalyst (spreads new sculk when a mob dies nearby). Ancient Cities also generate in the Deep Dark, with valuable loot that includes the Swift Sneak enchantment.

How a warden appears

A warden never spawns at random. It shows up in response to a Sculk Shrieker being activated. The system builds up in steps: a Sculk Sensor picks up vibrations (footsteps, opening chests, breaking blocks) and passes the signal on to a Sculk Shrieker. After three warnings (three shrieker activations), the fourth activation summons a warden, which climbs out of the ground nearby.

How it finds you

The warden is blind. It has no eyes and can't see players. It relies on three senses: hearing (it picks up vibrations from about 16 blocks away, and sneaking cuts out the sound of your footsteps), smell (it sniffs its surroundings every few seconds, so it can locate you even when you stand perfectly still) and anger level (an internal counter that rises with every vibration it detects, and the glowing heart in the warden's chest beats faster as its anger grows).

Sonic boom attack

When the warden can't reach you in melee, it uses the Sonic Boom: a ranged attack with a range of 15 blocks that passes through blocks, ignores armor and enchantments (except the Resistance effect) and deals 10 damage on Normal. It has a cooldown of about 5 seconds. That makes the usual defenses, like building a tower or hiding behind a wall, useless. The only real defense is getting out of the 15-block range.

How to survive an encounter

The best strategy is prevention: sneak through the whole Deep Dark, break Sculk Shriekers with a hoe enchanted with Silk Touch, surround yourself with wool blocks (they block vibrations) and avoid interacting with blocks near sensors. If a warden has already appeared, get away from it. Ender pearls (from endermen) are the fastest way to teleport out. Throw a snowball in the opposite direction to pull its attention away. A warden despawns after 60 seconds without detecting any vibrations.

Drops

The warden's drops are intentionally underwhelming: 1 Sculk Catalyst and only 5 XP. For comparison, the Ender Dragon gives 12,000 XP for the first kill. It's a clear message from Mojang: this mob is meant to be avoided, not killed. There is no unique drop to tempt you into a fight.

Fun facts

  • The warden was announced at Minecraft Live 2020 but only added in version 1.19.
  • It is the only mob with an attack that passes through blocks (the Sonic Boom).
  • The Darkness effect drastically limits what the player can see.
  • It has unique animations for emerging from the ground and burrowing back down, and no other mob spawns this way.
  • The warden's sounds, the pulsing heartbeat and the low growl, are among the most unsettling in the game.
