Multiplayer in Minecraft Dungeons II (aka Minecraft Dungeons 2) means local couch co-op plus teams of up to 4 players online or in mixed mode. According to the developers, crossplay works from the very first launch, and linking your accounts to a single Microsoft account gives you shared progress across different devices. To play online on consoles, you need your platform's subscription (on PS5, that's PlayStation Plus).

We've gathered the release date, prices, and platforms in our Minecraft Dungeons 2 release guide, and we cover the whole series on our Minecraft Dungeons page.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 Multiplayer: Player Count and Modes

You can play solo or in a team of up to 4. That limit comes from Mojang's co-op article on minecraft.net, and the Nintendo Europe catalog also lists 4 players. The table shows the state of things as of October 7, 2026.

The GRYOnline encyclopedia tags the game as 2 players. That's a simplification: you can of course play as a duo, but the team limit is 4 players.

Playing Minecraft Dungeons 2 as a Duo on One Console

Couch co-op works on all of the game's platforms, PC included. Store data points to this: Steam has the Shared/Split Screen Co-op category, the Microsoft Store lists the XblLocalCoop and SharedSplitScreen tags, and the Nintendo catalog gives up to 4 players.

If you're playing at a friend's place, you don't have to start with a new character. Where the platform allows it, you can log in on their hardware with your own account and play your own hero.

We couldn't confirm the details of the split screen: we don't know whether the image splits vertically or horizontally, or how many people can play on one screen on a given platform.

Several reviewers praise the shared play in particular. Nintendo Life appreciates the extensive co-op options, konsolowe.info and Meristation recommend the game for playing with kids, and Shacknews advises gathering the whole team under one roof first. You'll find more opinions in our Minecraft Dungeons 2 review roundup.

How to Play Minecraft Dungeons 2 Online with Friends

You gather friends in a private team, which you join with an 8-character code. The other route is matchmaking, which takes into account your quest progress, your region, and your hero's power level. It can also drop you into a session that's already in progress.

Online play runs on dedicated servers, chosen by ping. A couch team can also take the game online and let the rest of the squad join, up to 4 people in total. On PC, there's also Steam Remote Play Together: one copy of the game is enough to invite friends to remote play through Steam.

GameOnly praises the couch co-op but notes that online play can still cause problems. Digitec Magazine, on the other hand, advises against buying the game if you have no one to play with.

Crossplay and Shared Progress

The team's slogan is one-click crossplay: according to technical director Stefan Annell, you just launch the game for the first time, and playing together with people on other platforms simply works. Cross-platform play is also confirmed by the Cross-Platform Multiplayer tag on Steam and XblCrossPlatformCoop in the Microsoft Store.

Progress carries over between devices too. Heroes are saved on the game's servers, so once you link your console and PC accounts to one Microsoft account, you play the same character. The game runs on PC (Windows and Steam), Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Switch, and Switch 2, and you'll find the details in our Minecraft Dungeons 2 platform list.

For a look at how cross-platform play worked in the first game, see our 2020 article on crossplay, and we've collected the history of the series in the Minecraft Dungeons wiki.

Console Subscriptions

According to Xbox Wire (September 26, 2026), online play on consoles requires a subscription to the given platform, purchased separately. On PS5, that's PlayStation Plus, which the Polish PlayStation Store states outright. On Xbox, online play is covered by Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Couch co-op also works offline.

To find out how much the game itself costs and how the various editions differ, check our Minecraft Dungeons 2 price and edition roundup.

Online and Offline: Separate Modes

According to Mojang's article, online and offline modes are separate from each other. The konsolowe.info reviewer, in turn, listed among the cons: "A strange, permanent split of characters into online and offline mode." We couldn't confirm whether a hero from offline mode can later be moved to online play.

A practical tip: if you plan to play with friends over the internet, create your hero in online mode right away. If konsolowe.info's assessment holds up, you won't be able to carry offline characters over.
