Best enchantment builds in Minecraft: ideal weapons and armor
Ready-made "best in slot" enchantment sets for the sword, bow, trident, full armor, pickaxes and other tools, with the order to combine them in.
This chapter is the payoff of the whole enchanting guide: ready-made, optimized enchantment sets for every piece of gear in Minecraft. Each build lists the enchantments, explains why those ones, and gives tips on the combining order at the anvil. Use these builds and you will have the strongest gear the game allows.
The ideal sword: a netherite sword for everything
The netherite sword is the best all-round melee weapon in Minecraft, with 8 base damage and 2,031 durability. The ideal build has 7 enchantments:
- Sharpness V - +3 damage to every enemy. The most versatile damage enchantment.
- Looting III - more drops from every mob. Essential for farming resources.
- Unbreaking III - four times the durability. Over 8,000 uses.
- Mending - repairs itself with XP. The sword lasts forever.
- Fire Aspect II - 8 seconds of burning, and cooked meat from the animals you kill.
- Sweeping Edge III (Java Edition) - sweep attacks deal 75% damage against groups of enemies.
- Knockback II (optional) - knocks enemies back. Some players skip this enchantment because it makes finishing off targets harder.
This sword deals 11 damage per hit (8 base plus 3 from Sharpness V), plus fire damage, which is enough to take down most mobs in 1-2 hits. Looting III gets you the maximum loot, and Mending plus Unbreaking III mean the sword never wears out. If you prefer fighting the undead (zombies, skeletons), consider an alternative build with Smite V instead of Sharpness: Smite V adds +12.5 damage against the undead, which lets you kill a zombie in a single hit.
The ideal bow: two variants
Mending variant (recommended):
- Power V - +150% damage. Arrows deal up to 25 damage with a critical hit.
- Flame - flaming arrows, an extra 4 fire damage.
- Punch II - knocks the hit enemy back. Great against creepers.
- Unbreaking III - ~1,536 arrows instead of 384.
- Mending - permanent durability, but you have to carry arrows.
Infinity variant (convenient):
- Power V + Flame + Punch II + Unbreaking III + Infinity
- You don't have to carry arrows, but the bow wears out and has to be replaced.
The Mending variant is better in the long run: losing a fully enchanted bow hurts more than having to carry arrows. With a chicken farm and a simple arrow production setup, not having Infinity isn't a problem.
The ideal armor: a full netherite set
Helmet:
- Protection IV - universal damage reduction of 16%.
- Respiration III - 60 seconds underwater instead of 15.
- Aqua Affinity - normal mining speed underwater.
- Unbreaking III + Mending - permanent durability.
Chestplate:
- Protection IV + Unbreaking III + Mending
- The chestplate has no specialty enchantments, so the build is simple. It is the most important armor piece in terms of defense points.
Leggings:
- Protection IV + Unbreaking III + Mending
- Same as the chestplate: pure defense with no extra specializations.
Boots (main):
- Protection IV - universal defense.
- Feather Falling IV - cuts fall damage by 48%. Saves your life in the End.
- Depth Strider III - normal movement speed underwater.
- Unbreaking III + Mending
Boots (Nether): An alternative set with Soul Speed III instead of Depth Strider III, for moving fast over soul sand. It is worth having two pairs of boots for different occasions.
A full netherite set with Protection IV on every piece cuts the damage you take dramatically. That makes the player nearly indestructible: only huge hits (the Warden, a fall from an enormous height, lava) are a real threat. Fighting the Ender Dragon or even the Warden becomes much safer.
The ideal tools
Fortune pickaxe (your main mining tool):
- Efficiency V - lightning-fast mining.
- Fortune III - on average 2.2x more ore.
- Unbreaking III + Mending
This pickaxe is the top enchanting priority: Fortune III can double or triple the amount of diamonds, emeralds, lapis lazuli and redstone you get, which fundamentally changes the pace of the game. If you can only enchant one item, make it a pickaxe with Fortune III.
Silk Touch pickaxe (for blocks):
Use it to collect ice blocks (for ice highways), glass panes, ores you want to break later with Fortune III, grass blocks, coral, amethyst clusters and many more. Keep both pickaxes in your inventory and switch between them as the situation demands.
Shovel:
- Efficiency V + Silk Touch (or Fortune III) + Unbreaking III + Mending
Silk Touch on a shovel lets you pick up snow and grass blocks. Fortune III on a shovel gives a 100% chance of flint from gravel (instead of 10%), which is useful for making arrows.
Axe:
The axe is the only tool that can carry both tool enchantments (Efficiency, Silk Touch) and weapon enchantments (Sharpness). In Java Edition an axe deals more damage per hit than a sword (but swings slower), which makes it a great alternative weapon for single, powerful blows.
Enchanting priority: where to start
If you are just starting to build your gear (check our first steps guide), here is the recommended order of enchanting:
- Pickaxe with Fortune III - roughly doubles the ore you collect straight away, which speeds up everything else.
- Sword with Sharpness V + Looting III - safer fights and more loot.
- Armor with Protection IV - start with the chestplate and boots (with Feather Falling IV).
- Silk Touch pickaxe - rounds out the mining set.
- Bow with Power V - a ranged weapon for tough situations.
- The remaining tools - shovel, axe, hoe.
- Trident, crossbow - specialist weapons come last.
At every stage, add Unbreaking III and Mending: these two enchantments are the foundation of every build. Get Mending from librarian villagers (see the chapter on enchanted books) and collect XP from XP farms.
Summary of the whole guide: The enchanting system in Minecraft is a deep mechanic that rewards patience and planning. Start by understanding the basics of the enchantment system, learn how the anvil works, build a network of librarian villagers to get enchanted books, and apply the optimal combining order. The result is gear that makes you almost invincible.
