On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Mojang released the Wilderness Bound update, the third content drop of the year for Minecraft. In Java Edition it's version 26.3, and it landed on Bedrock Edition the same day. The new content is free for anyone who already owns the game, and the headline features are the Dappled Forest with its poplar trees, Abandoned Camps, Straw Beds and Cushions you can sit on.
The Dappled Forest and poplars in three colors
The biggest addition is the Dappled Forest, a new type of forest that generates near cold biomes. It's home to poplars, both standing and fallen, and each tree has leaves in one of three colors: red, orange or yellow. The falling leaf particles match the color of the canopy. Leaves drop Poplar Saplings, which grow into a tree in one of three randomly chosen variants, and you can also buy the saplings from a Wandering Trader. The Dappled Forest with a camp is exactly what you see on the new main menu panorama.
Poplar Logs can be crafted into a full set of the new wood: Poplar Planks, stairs, slabs, doors, trapdoors, fences and fence gates, plus signs, shelves, buttons, pressure plates and boats, including the chest version. According to Beebom, poplar planks and logs have a warm gray tone similar to Pale Oak Wood, giving you a neutral color palette that's handy for building houses.
Shelf Mushrooms, a new fungus in two sizes, grow on standing and fallen poplars. You can grow a small Shelf Mushroom bigger with Bone Meal, and a large one drops two mushrooms when broken. In recipes a Shelf Mushroom works like other mushrooms, so it can go into Mushroom Stew and Suspicious Stew, and stepping on one gives you a slight bounce, much like a bed. The Wandering Trader sells Shelf Mushrooms too. Between the trees you'll find patches of Red Shrub, a decorative plant that can be dropped into a Composter, and Bone Meal makes another shrub grow next to it.
As for animals, sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes spawn in the Dappled Forest, using the variants known from cold biomes wherever possible. The update adds no brand-new mobs.
Abandoned Camps and new maps
Abandoned Camps are a new structure that generates in eighteen biomes, from meadows and cherry groves through forests, taigas and jungles to swamps, savannas, wooded badlands and the Pale Garden. Each of these biomes has its own camp variant that matches its surroundings, though some elements repeat everywhere. The camps contain chests and barrels with loot.
Camp loot includes new Explorer Maps. Some of them lead to other camps in eight biomes, including the Dappled Forest, cherry grove and Pale Garden, while others point to older structures: ancient cities, trial chambers, mineshafts, desert and jungle pyramids, underwater ruins and woodland mansions.
The map system itself has changed too. Explorer Maps are now separate items with their own icons rather than renamed regular maps, and the ones from older worlds convert into the new items when loaded. Explorer Maps and Buried Treasure Maps can no longer be zoomed out, either at a crafting table or at a cartography table. Beebom called Wilderness Bound one of the coziest, exploration-focused updates of the year, one where touring the world matters more than combat and new mobs.
Cushions, Straw Beds, stairs and slabs
A Cushion is an item you place in the world to sit on. It's crafted from three wool slabs of the same color, so it comes in sixteen colors. You can put it on any flat surface, it has no collision and can overlap other objects, except other Cushions. Pistons won't push it, and if the block underneath disappears, the Cushion breaks.
A Straw Bed lets you sleep through the night without setting a spawn point. It works only once and disappears after use, and you can't use it in the Nether or The End, because trying to sleep there destroys the bed. Three Hay Bales make four Straw Beds, and the statistics screen now has a counter for nights slept in them.
Every color of wool and concrete now also has its own stairs and slabs, such as White Wool Stairs or the White Concrete Slab. The wool versions dampen vibrations just like regular wool, which matters for sculk sensors, and concrete stairs and slabs can also be made in a Stonecutter. According to Beebom, wool stairs and slabs often form the roofs of Abandoned Camps.
Graphics, game window and Realms
The "Improved Transparency" option in the graphics settings now enables a new order-independent transparency (OIT) algorithm. Transparent objects no longer need to be sorted before rendering, and according to Mojang this fixes all the major bugs related to them, such as some objects disappearing when viewed through transparent surfaces. The algorithm is an approximation, though, so some minor new artifacts appear, such as a slightly wrong color for clouds seen through several layers of transparent surfaces, and the load on your hardware is supposed to be higher than with the previous version of the option. You can toggle it with the F3 + X shortcut. Beebom gives the example of a boat on Water viewed through Glass, which used to look flooded and now renders correctly. In the release notes, Mojang thanks the modding community for the knowledge that helped prepare this change.
Java Edition now uses the SDL3 library instead of GLFW to handle the window, controls and system integration. Borderless fullscreen is now the default fullscreen mode in the UI, and switching to exclusive fullscreen no longer requires restarting the game. Control settings are now based on physical keys rather than codes that depend on the keyboard layout, and on Linux the game natively uses Wayland when it's available. Gothic has also joined the list of languages.
In Realms you can create up to five invite codes per Realm, set how long they're valid, disable them and delete them, and you join a Realm by entering the code on a new screen in the Realms menu. In Spectator Mode you can now use portals to teleport.
Availability and the road to release
The update is free, and all you need is Minecraft: Java Edition or Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. On consoles, online multiplayer requires a separate subscription for the given platform. Wilderness Bound is the third drop of 2026, following the March 26.1 update and the June 26.2 Chaos Cubed.
On Java the changes were tested from June 23 in ten snapshots, followed by three pre-releases and three release candidates, the last of which came out on September 14, the day before launch.
