How to find a biome in Minecraft
A complete guide to finding biomes: commands, online tools, mods and exploration strategies.
Mushroom Fields for a safe base, a jungle for parrots, the Deep Dark for an ancient city and its Warden: whatever biome you're after, there are several proven ways to find it fast. This guide covers the built-in commands, external tools, mods and exploration strategies.
Minecraft has over 60 different biomes spread across three dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether and the End. Each biome holds its own resources, mobs and structures that you need to progress in the game. Knowing how to locate biomes saves you time and helps you plan your exploration of the world better. The methods below will get you where you want to go quickly, in Survival and Creative alike.
The /locate biome command
The /locate biome command is the fastest way to find a biome in Minecraft Java Edition. It's available in Creative mode or with cheats enabled, and it gives you the exact coordinates of the nearest biome of a given type.
Command syntax
/locate biome minecraft:<biome_name> The biome name has to be its Minecraft ID: lowercase, with underscores instead of spaces.
Examples
/locate biome minecraft:mushroom_fields Mushroom Fields /locate biome minecraft:jungle Jungle /locate biome minecraft:deep_dark Deep Dark /locate biome minecraft:cherry_grove Cherry Grove /locate biome minecraft:ice_spikes Ice Spikes /locate biome minecraft:badlands Badlands Good to know
- The command needs cheats enabled or Creative mode. In a Survival world, you can turn cheats on through "Open to LAN" with the Allow Cheats option.
- After you type
/locate biome minecraft:, the game suggests a list of available biomes: press Tab to autocomplete. - The command returns coordinates (X, Y, Z). Click them in chat to automatically fill in a
/tpcommand to those coordinates. - If the command can't find the biome, it shows an error message.
- In Bedrock Edition, the command is also called
/locate biomeand works the same way.
The debug screen (F3)
Press F3 in the game (Java Edition) to open the debug screen. On the left side of the screen you'll see the biome you're standing in. It's the simplest way to identify the biome around you without using commands.
What you'll see on the F3 screen
- Biome: the ID of the biome you're in, for example minecraft:plains
- XYZ: your current coordinates (useful for navigation)
- Facing: the direction you're looking in (north, south, east or west)
Bedrock Edition has no F3 screen: turn on the "Show Coordinates" option in the world settings instead. You can check biome names with the /locate biome command or with external tools.
Online tools
If you don't want to use commands (for example, because you play on a server without cheats), online tools let you find biomes by entering the world seed. The seed is the number that generates the layout of your world: you'll find it in the world settings or with the /seed command.
Chunkbase Biome Finder
WebsiteThe most popular online tool for finding biomes. Enter your world seed and game version, and the map shows where every biome is. Supports Java and Bedrock Edition.
https://www.chunkbase.com/apps/biome-finderMineAtlas
WebsiteAn alternative seed map with a biome viewer. It also shows the locations of structures, villages and spawners. A simple interface, but not always updated for the latest version.
http://mineatlas.comAmidst
Desktop appA Java desktop app for analyzing seeds. It generates a full biome map of the world without launching the game. Ideal for planning worlds on servers.
Cubiomes Viewer
Desktop appAn advanced open-source tool for analyzing seeds. Faster than Amidst, with biome filters and a search for seeds that meet specific criteria.
How to get your world seed
- Java Edition: type
/seedin chat (no cheats needed!) - Bedrock Edition: check the "Seed" field in the world settings
- Server: ask an admin, or use
/seedif you have permission - The seed is a whole number (it can be negative). Copy it exactly: a single mistake changes the whole layout of the world!
Minimap mods
Minimap mods are the most popular way to identify biomes in real time. Most of them show biome names on the minimap, map the terrain you explore automatically and let you set waypoints. They work in Fabric and Forge modpacks.
Xaero's Minimap
Mod (Fabric/Forge)One of the most popular minimap mods. It shows biomes, mobs and players in real time. Compatible with Fabric and Forge. The Fair-Play edition hides caves and the mob radar.
JourneyMap
Mod (Fabric/Forge)A feature-rich full-screen map and minimap that maps terrain automatically. It shows biomes, waypoints and mobs. The most feature-packed map mod available.
Xaero's World Map
Mod (Fabric/Forge)A full-screen world map that works together with Xaero's Minimap. It automatically maps the terrain you've explored, with biomes and waypoints marked.
VoxelMap
Mod (Fabric/Forge)A classic minimap mod with a long history. It shows biomes and mobs and lets you set waypoints. Lightweight and compatible with most modpacks.
Installing a minimap mod
- Install Fabric Loader or Forge for the right Minecraft version
- Download the mod from a trusted source (Modrinth, CurseForge)
- Put the mod's .jar file in the
.minecraft/mods/folder - Launch the game with the Fabric/Forge profile, and the minimap appears automatically
- Most servers allow minimap mods, but check the server rules
Exploration strategies
If you prefer pure gameplay without commands or tools, here are proven strategies for exploring biomes in Survival mode:
The spiral method
Start at spawn and move in a growing spiral: 100 blocks north, 100 east, 200 south, 200 west and so on. You explore new terrain systematically without retracing your route. Mark the biomes you've visited on a paper map or in a notebook.
Follow a river
Rivers in Minecraft cross many biomes, so sailing a boat along a river is a quick, safe way to discover different biomes. A boat on ice is even faster: if you come across a frozen river, use it as a highway.
Elytra and rockets
Once you have an elytra and a supply of firework rockets, you can fly over large areas fast. Flying at Y=200 or higher gives you a great view of the biomes below. It's by far the fastest way to explore in the game.
The Nether shortcut
Every block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld. Build a tunnel in the Nether and place a portal every 100 blocks: each portal puts you 800 blocks further along in the Overworld. It's an ideal way to survey long distances quickly.
Cartography maps
A cartography table lets you zoom a map out: a map at level 4/4 covers 2,048 by 2,048 blocks. Fill in map after map and hang them on a wall to build a huge map of your world with its biomes.
Visual clues
Every biome has unique visual features you can see from far away: the color of the grass and leaves, the type of trees, snow and the shape of the terrain. Learn to recognize biomes by these features: for example, pink trees mean a cherry grove, and orange ground means badlands.
Seed analysis
If you're starting a new world and want specific biomes near spawn, you can analyze a seed before you create the world. The Minecraft community regularly shares interesting seeds with unique biome layouts.
How to find the perfect seed
- Reddit r/minecraftseeds: a community that shares seeds with unique biome layouts, villages at spawn, rare biomes nearby and more.
- Seedhunt.net: a seed search engine with filters: pick the biomes you want near spawn, and the tool finds matching seeds.
- Cubiomes Viewer: use the biome filter in Cubiomes to search for seeds with specific biomes within a set radius of spawn.
- Testing: create a Creative world with the seed you picked, fly around with an elytra and check the layout. If it suits you, create a new Survival world with the same seed.
Useful facts about seeds
- The seed determines the biome layout, but it doesn't affect mob spawning or the weather: those are random.
- You can type text instead of a number as the seed: Minecraft converts the text into a number with the hashCode function.
- Seed 0 is a valid seed: it doesn't mean "random". An empty seed field (with nothing typed in) gives you a random seed.
