Lifesteal SMP: what it is, how to play and how to set up a server

Lifesteal SMP is one of the hottest Minecraft formats of recent years: when you kill a player you steal their heart, and they lose two health points. Once all the hearts are gone, you are out of the server. Tension, politics, alliances and betrayals. This guide explains exactly what Lifesteal SMP is, how to play it well and how to set up your own server with a Lifesteal plugin or datapack.

What Lifesteal SMP is

Lifesteal SMP (sometimes called Lifesteal Minecraft or Heart Steal SMP) is a variation of the Survival Multiplayer mode with one core mechanic added: when you kill another player you take one of their hearts and add it to your own health bar. Each heart is 2 HP, so the difference is felt. A player with 6 hearts goes down fast, while one with 14 hearts can absorb several hits.

A player usually starts with 10 hearts (20 HP, classic Minecraft). The maximum number of hearts is sometimes capped (for example 20 hearts = 40 HP), and after losing all of them the player gets one of these outcomes:

  • Temporary ban - for example 24 hours, after which you can come back
  • Spectator mode - the player can see the server but cannot interact until someone "revives" them
  • Permanent ban - the hardest version, the player stays out for the whole season
  • Reset of all items and a return with 10 hearts - the soft option for new servers

Where Lifesteal SMP came from

The format was popularized by big English-speaking Minecraft creators. It became especially popular through SSundee and PrestonPlayz videos, in which groups of YouTubers played whole Lifesteal SMP seasons full of drama, betrayals and epic fights. Since 2021 the format has spread across the whole community, and many servers now offer it as one of their game modes.

These videos serve as inspiration, but minecraft.pl does not link to specific videos or channels. To see the format in action, search for "Lifesteal SMP" on YouTube.

Why Lifesteal SMP is addictive

In a regular SMP, dying costs you items and time but does not lock you out of the game. In Lifesteal every death has real weight: you lose a heart, and a few mistakes are enough to drop out of the season. That changes the whole economy of decisions. Every trip out of the base is a risk, every fight is a negotiation and alliances are currency.

How to play Lifesteal SMP

Lifesteal needs a different strategy than a classic SMP. These are the most important survival rules, and they hold up on most servers.

Day one: safety above everything

Right after you spawn, run away from spawn in a random direction, at least 1,000 blocks. Only then start building a base. Players camping the spawn is a Lifesteal classic: easy hearts for experienced PvP players. If the server has a /wild or /rtp command (random teleport), use it, and you will land out of reach of the scouts.

A hidden base, not a beautiful castle

Your first base should be hidden, not pretty. Underground bunkers, walls made of blocks that blend into the surroundings, entrances camouflaged as ordinary world structures. Nice houses on the surface are an invitation for anyone flying past with an elytra. Leave the decorations for later, once you have a stable stock of hearts and gear.

Gear: netherite armor and the enchanted golden apple

Do not get into PvP without the minimum: a full set of iron armor with Protection IV, a good sword or axe with Sharpness V and a golden apple in your hotbar (absorption and regeneration). In the later phases of a season replace iron with netherite and add enchanted golden apples (expensive, but they save lives). Alliances and politics

On most Lifesteal SMPs alliances are an informal safety system. A group of 3-5 players who agree not to attack each other and to defend each other's bases has much better odds of surviving a season than a solo player. The catch: alliances cannot be enforced technically, and any ally can betray you at any moment and steal your heart. Choose your companions carefully.

When to fight, when to run

The rule: fight only when you have the advantage: better armor, better gear, better terrain position, better health. Otherwise, run. Ender pearls in the hotbar are a must. Water in the inventory saves you from falls. Firework rockets with an elytra give an instant escape, but the smoke trail gives away your position.

Crafting hearts (if the server allows it)

Most modern Lifesteal SMPs have a recipe for the heart, usually from expensive materials (diamonds, Nether Stars, Eyes of Ender). This lets a player fight back after dying instead of waiting out a ban. Check the recipe list with the /recipes command or on the server's website, and keep collecting materials even when your hearts are full, so you have a reserve for worse days.

How to set up your own Lifesteal SMP

Launching a Lifesteal SMP server takes about an hour, plus hours of configuration if you want to tune the balance. Step by step below.

Step 1: Prepare a Paper or Spigot server

You need a Minecraft server on version 1.21 or newer running Paper (recommended) or Spigot. Make sure online-mode=true in server.properties (anti-piracy: it accepts only paid accounts) and that you can access the plugins folder. Detailed guide: how to create a Minecraft server.

Step 2: Install the Lifesteal plugin

Download a Lifesteal plugin from SpigotMC or Modrinth. Look for a version that is currently maintained, preferably rated 4+/5 with plenty of downloads. Put the .jar file into the plugins folder and restart the server. The plugin creates the file plugins/Lifesteal/config.yml, where you configure all the parameters. We compare specific plugins (LifeStealZ, LifeSteal and others) with their 26.x versions, licenses and default configuration in our roundup of SMP plugins.

Step 3: Configure the heart-stealing mechanic

In config.yml set the key values (the exact key names depend on the plugin):

  • starting-hearts - the number of hearts at the start (classically 10 = 20 HP)
  • max-hearts - the maximum number of hearts (for example 20 = 40 HP, which stops endless farming)
  • min-hearts - the minimum below which the penalty kicks in (usually 0)
  • death-action - what happens after all hearts are lost: ban (timed), spectator, kick, reset
  • ban-duration - if you chose a ban, the time in hours (for example 24 hours, or 168 hours on high difficulty)

Step 4: Add heart crafting and events

Balancing a season usually requires a way back for players who lost hearts. A common heart recipe is 8 diamonds + a Nether Star in the middle or 4 diamonds + 4 Eyes of Ender + a Totem of Undying. You define recipes in config.yml or in a dedicated recipes.yml file, depending on the plugin.

Also add plugins that support the atmosphere: EssentialsX for basic commands, LuckPerms for ranks, WorldGuard to protect spawn from camping and CoreProtect for logs. See the full list of required plugins in the SMP guide.

Step 5: An alternative, a datapack instead of a plugin

If you want to avoid plugins and stay on pure vanilla, there are Lifesteal datapacks that run on a vanilla server. To install one, download the .zip, drop it into world/datapacks and type /reload in game. Datapacks have fewer configuration options than plugins, but they are compatible with a vanilla server and easier to update.

Step 6: Test with a small group before opening

Before you open the server to the public, invite 3-5 testers (friends, Discord members) for 2-3 days of testing. Check whether the stealing mechanic works, whether the ban after death can lock someone out forever because of a bug, and whether heart crafting is balanced. Only after testing open the whitelist or public recruitment.

Tip: Lifesteal SMP works best in a seasonal format: 2-3 months, then a map reset and a new season. It lets players who lost all their hearts in the previous edition come back, and it keeps the meta fresh. Announce seasons a month in advance.

Lifesteal servers from Poland

The Lifesteal mode is available as a separate mode on many big Polish server networks. These are not dedicated Lifesteal-only servers (those exist too, but they are usually smaller and whitelisted), but big networks that offer Lifesteal next to other modes.

Polish networks that have Lifesteal in their offer:

  • CraftMC.PL - a multi-mode network with a separate LifeSteal mode and DropSMP
  • KeyCraft.PL - 16+ modes in one network, including LifeSteal
  • Szefy.PL - a PvP-focused server with LifeSteal FFA as a duel mode

Current IP addresses, versions and descriptions of all the Polish networks are in our roundup of Polish Minecraft servers. The full catalog filtered by category is available in the server catalog.

Besides the public networks, it is worth looking for private whitelisted Lifesteal SMPs through Discord communities and creators' channels. These are usually smaller projects of 20-50 players with a closer community and no pay-to-win mechanics.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is Lifesteal SMP?

Lifesteal SMP is a variation of the survival multiplayer mode in which killing another player takes one of their hearts and adds it to yours. Each heart is an extra two health points. When you lose all your hearts, you get a temporary or permanent ban.

How do I get a heart back after dying?

It depends on the server. Standard options are: killing another player, crafting a heart from rare materials (diamonds + Nether Star), finding one in loot crates, or buying one with server currency.

Is Lifesteal SMP only for PvP players?

Not necessarily. Lifesteal combines survival with PvP, but the basis is sensible heart management: fight only when you have hearts to spare, a hidden base, alliances. Pure PvP players dominate the late seasons, but in the first week everyone has equal chances.

How do I set up my own Lifesteal SMP server?

The quickest route is a Lifesteal plugin on Paper/Spigot: put the .jar into the plugins folder, configure config.yml (starting hearts, penalty mechanics) and start the server. Alternatively use a Lifesteal datapack on vanilla Minecraft.

Can I play Lifesteal SMP solo?

Yes, but it is harder. Lifesteal rewards alliances, and a group of 3-5 players has better odds of surviving a season. A solo player has to play more defensively, with more focus on hiding the base and avoiding confrontation.

Does Lifesteal SMP require an original Minecraft account?

All reputable Lifesteal servers, Polish and international, require a paid Minecraft account bought at minecraft.net. Servers that accept non-premium accounts are a risk for malware and account security, so stay away from them.

How much does it cost to run your own Lifesteal SMP?

From 0 PLN (Aternos, free hosting) to roughly 20-100 PLN a month for good paid hosting. The Lifesteal plugin is usually free. See the comparison in our hosting roundup.
