Anarchy in Minecraft

Anarchy servers are Minecraft servers with no rules at all: no moderation, no bans, no land protection and no ban on hacks. It's the most brutal form of Minecraft. Griefing is the norm, hacking is tolerated, and trusting nobody is the only sensible strategy.

What anarchy in Minecraft is

Anarchy is a type of Minecraft server where no rules apply. There are no moderators, no bans for griefing, no land protection and no ban on hacked clients. The only limit is the game engine itself.

On a typical survival server, destroying someone's build gets you banned. On anarchy it's simply part of the game. Players build, destroy, steal, form alliances and betray each other. Anything goes.

It isn't a game mode in the technical sense. Anarchy servers run on an ordinary server engine (most often Paper or Vanilla), and the administration simply chooses not to moderate. The server runs, and the players do what they want.

History of anarchy servers

The anarchy scene in Minecraft began in 2010 with the creation of 2b2t (2builders2tools), the oldest and best-known anarchy server in the world. The 2b2t map has existed continuously for more than 15 years. Its spawn is a desolate landscape of destruction that stretches for thousands of blocks in every direction.

2b2t exploded in popularity in 2016. The YouTuber FitMC documents the server's history in the series "The Oldest Anarchy Server in Minecraft": faction wars, the destruction of legendary bases, exploits and cult figures.

Other well-known anarchy servers include 9b9t, 0b0t and Constantiam, each with its own community and history. What they share is that the map usually isn't reset, so the players' history stays etched into the terrain.

The rules, or rather the lack of them

On most anarchy servers there are practically no rules. In practice that means:

  • Griefing is normal: destroying builds, flooding them with lava, blowing them up with TNT. It isn't rule-breaking, it's part of the game
  • Hacked clients are tolerated: aimbot, ESP, fly, speed, X-ray. On anarchy nobody will ban you for it
  • Theft is an everyday thing: an unsecured chest is a public chest
  • No land protection: no plugins like WorldGuard or Towny
  • No chat moderation: chat on anarchy is an experience of its own, and often toxic

The only thing that can happen to you is a kick for deliberately crashing the server (lag machines, entity spam). Even that depends on the particular server.

Griefing, hacks and anarchy culture

Anarchy has developed its own culture, completely different from the rest of the Minecraft community. The key elements:

Bases and hiding them

Building on anarchy is a race against time: every base will eventually be found and destroyed. That's why players build far from spawn (usually millions of blocks away), leave no traces (Nether paths, elytra use) and often keep several backup bases. The most advanced players use stashes (hidden chests of supplies) scattered across the whole map.

Using exploits

On a normal server an exploit is a reason to be banned. On anarchy it's a key skill. Item duplication, glitches that let you into locked bases, bed trapping: the anarchy community treats exploits as tools, not cheating.

Groups and factions

Despite having no formal structures, large anarchy servers see groups of players form. They build shared mega-bases, organize griefing expeditions and fight wars with other groups. On 2b2t, groups such as the Spawnmasons were active.

How to survive on an anarchy server

The first minutes on an anarchy server are pure chaos. Spawn is wrecked, players in full gear are lurking everywhere, and you start with bare hands. Here are some proven strategies:

Escaping spawn

Priority number one: get as far away from spawn as fast as you can. Don't gather resources near spawn, because there won't be much anyway. Run in one direction. If you find a Nether portal, use it: in the Nether you cover 8x the distance. Aim for at least 100,000 blocks from spawn before you start building.

Trust nobody

This isn't an exaggeration. Players on anarchy will pretend to be friends to learn the location of your base and then destroy it. Don't share coordinates, don't post screenshots with visible coordinates, and don't invite anyone you don't know personally.

Hide your base

  • Build underground or in the ocean: surface structures can be seen from far away
  • Don't make paths leading to your base
  • Don't tear up the terrain around your base (digging traces are visible)
  • Make stashes in random locations, so if you lose your base you won't lose everything

Get good gear quickly

On anarchy you don't have time to gather resources slowly. Look for abandoned bases, other players' stashes and duplicated items. A full set of netherite armor with enchantments is the minimum to survive a fight with another player.

Pro tip: Hacked clients are the norm on anarchy, so learn how they work. ESP will show you hidden players, and elytra fly lets you travel quickly. On normal servers that's a ban, but on anarchy many players consider it a requirement for survival.

Is anarchy for you?

Anarchy in Minecraft isn't for everyone. If you get frustrated when someone destroys your builds, or you expect fair play and mutual respect, stay far away from anarchy. Moderated survival servers will give you a much better experience.

But if you're looking for a raw, unfiltered version of Minecraft, one where your survival depends entirely on your skill, your cunning and your paranoia, anarchy is the only mode that offers it. It's Minecraft in its purest, most ruthless form.
