NVIDIA has published the RTX Remix 1.6 update, which for the first time brings experimental path tracing support to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1. The tool landed on GitHub on October 23, 2026, and in the following days received wide coverage in tech media, since full ray tracing in Minecraft had until now been reserved for Bedrock Edition and ray tracing based on DirectX 12.
How path tracing works in the Java version
RTX Remix is NVIDIA's platform for modernizing the graphics of older games by capturing and replacing their rendering engine. For Minecraft, however, the NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios team instead built a dedicated Fabric-based mod that plugs into the Java Edition engine through a new, API-based rendering pipeline, rather than the classic graphics call capturing used previously in other titles.
The mod adds RTX Dynamic Illumination with thousands of light sources casting dynamic shadows on the voxel world geometry, RTX Global Illumination simulating up to four bounces of indirect light, as well as volumetric effects, reflections, refraction, caustics and subsurface scattering visible, for example, on ice blocks. To showcase the feature, NVIDIA worked with the Blockworks team to create a dedicated demo map and a physically based (PBR) texture pack highlighting the new lighting effects.
Hardware requirements and installation
The feature works as a beta and requires manual installation outside the standard launcher. The requirements for running it include:
- Minecraft Java Edition version 1.21.1
- Windows 10 or 11 in x64 or ARM64 architecture
- a GeForce RTX 30-series card or newer with driver version 616.92 or higher, or an RTX Spark device with driver version 621.01 or higher
- downloading the mod from GitHub, weighing about 983 MB
NVIDIA notes that at this stage compatibility with other mods is limited, and some blocks, scenes and gameplay elements may look incorrect or cause performance drops. That's a typical disclaimer for early experimental releases, similar to what Mojang itself uses in its own snapshots and Bedrock previews.
DLSS 5 and benefits beyond Minecraft
RTX Remix 1.6 is more than just support for Minecraft Java Edition. The update introduces DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering technology, which uses information about the scene and game engine to improve lighting and material quality beyond classic resolution upscaling. This feature is currently reserved exclusively for GeForce RTX 50-series cards.
The new version also raises the limit for Multi Frame Generation to 6x on compatible hardware and adds a performance-oriented DLSS Frame Generation mode (Preset C) in beta. RTX Remix 1.6 also brings native support for Windows on ARM, which means Portal with RTX and the Half-Life 2 RTX demo are now playable on RTX Spark devices, while the integrated ComfyUI 2.0 environment makes it easier for mod creators to generate AI-assisted textures and assets.
Improvements for AMD cards
Even though RTX Remix is an NVIDIA platform, the 1.6 update also brings benefits to owners of competing cards. Thanks to the default selection of a TraceRay implementation optimized for AMD architecture, Radeon card users can expect about a 20% increase in frame rate with driver version 26.6.4: in the example shown by NVIDIA, performance rose from 53 to 63 FPS, though the actual effect depends on the specific hardware configuration.
What this means for Polish players
For players using the Java version on PC, this is the first chance to try full path tracing without switching to Bedrock or console. The mod doesn't require buying an additional version of the game, but it's aimed exclusively at owners of newer GeForce cards or RTX Spark devices, so on older hardware the feature simply won't run. It's also worth remembering that, as a third-party product, the mod has to be installed manually and currently works poorly with popular modpacks, so fans of mods for building or survival should for now treat it as a graphical curiosity rather than a permanent part of their gameplay. NVIDIA hasn't given a timeline for when the feature will leave beta and gain broader support for mods and newer game versions.
