Mod ranking
Fabric API
The core library for Fabric mods. Most mods on Fabric require it, and almost nothing works without it.
JEI (Just Enough Items)
Recipe and item viewer. It shows how to craft every item in the game, which makes it essential in modpacks with hundreds of new recipes.
Sodium
Optimization mod for Fabric that can triple your FPS in Minecraft without changing how the game looks. The best alternative to OptiFine on Fabric.
Create
Automation and machinery mod with a gorgeous steampunk look. Mechanical belts, cogwheels, engines: a whole logistics system without a single piece of redstone.
Iris Shaders
Shader support for Fabric and NeoForge, built on Sodium. It pairs shaders with full optimization, which makes it the best alternative to OptiFine shaders.
Alex's Mobs
Over 80 new mobs based on real animals, from capybaras and gorillas to whale sharks and an alien. Each one has unique mechanics.
Applied Energistics 2
Digital storage and autocrafting system. Instead of chests, you get drives that hold millions of items and a network that crafts for you.
Botania
Magic mod built around flowers and natural mana energy. Automation with no GUIs and no pipes: just flowers, sparks and magic.
JourneyMap
In-game minimap and full-screen map with real-time rendering. Waypoints, mob tracking, cave mapping and export to your web browser.
Farmer's Delight
An expanded cooking and farming system. New crops, dishes, kitchen tools and a whole meal-preparation system with bonuses.
Tinkers' Construct
A system for building custom tools and weapons from swappable parts. Cast a cobalt blade, add a wooden handle and upgrade it with a magnet: your tool, your rules.
Mekanism
A complete tech package: 5x ore processing, fusion generators, the MekaSuit, teleporters and a digital pipe system.
Quark
Small vanilla improvements that should have been in the game from the start. Auto step-up onto slabs, chest sorting, stonecutter recipes for stairs: hundreds of quality-of-life changes.
Biomes O' Plenty
Over 50 new biomes, from tropical jungles to crystal caves. The oldest and most polished world generation mod.
Waystones
A fast travel system built on stone obelisks. Find a waystone in a village, activate it and teleport to it from anywhere.
Immersive Engineering
Tech mod with multiblock machines in a retro-industrial style. Huge furnaces, power lines, excavators and conveyors, all with a focus on realism.
Storage Drawers
Compact item drawers that show their contents on the front. Perfect for sorting resources: one click puts in or takes out a whole stack.
Chisel & Bits
Carve blocks down to single pixels (16x16x16). Make architectural details, sculptures and micro-structures that are impossible in vanilla.
Iron Chests
Upgraded chests with more storage: iron (54 slots), gold (81), diamond (108), all the way up to obsidian (108 + blast-proof).
OptiFine
Legendary optimization mod with built-in shader support, zoom and connected textures. The most popular mod in Minecraft history.

How to choose the right mods for you
I want Minecraft to run faster
Start with Sodium + Fabric API. Two mods, two to three times the FPS. If you want shaders, add Iris Shaders. You don't need OptiFine if you have Sodium + Iris.
I want to automate and build machines
The best path is Create: beautiful steampunk machines with interactive tutorials. For more advanced players: Mekanism (5x ore processing, fusion reactors) or AE2 (digital storage).
I want magic and adventure
Botania is the best-designed magic mod: automation through flowers, with no GUIs. Add Alex's Mobs (80+ new animals) and Biomes O' Plenty (50+ biomes) for the full exploration experience.
I want to improve vanilla without overhauling it
Quark adds hundreds of small improvements that Mojang should have made years ago. Round it out with Farmer's Delight (cooking), JourneyMap (maps) and Waystones (fast travel).
Quick mod installation
Choose a mod loader
Fabric: lightweight, with fast updates. Ideal for optimization (Sodium) and light modpacks. Download it from fabricmc.net.
Forge / NeoForge: heavier, but with more mods (Create, Tinkers' Construct, Mekanism). Download Forge from files.minecraftforge.net and NeoForge from neoforged.net.
Install the loader
Run the installer you downloaded. Pick your Minecraft version and click "Install". The loader creates a new profile in the Minecraft Launcher. If you use Prism Launcher, you can install the loader right from its interface.
Download mods and drop them into the folder
Download the .jar files from Modrinth or CurseForge. Copy them into .minecraft/mods/. On Fabric, add Fabric API too. Don't unpack the .jar files.
Launch the game
In the launcher, select the profile with your loader and click "Play". If the game crashes, check the log in .minecraft/logs/latest.log. The most common problem is a mod that doesn't match your Minecraft version. Always download mods for your exact Minecraft version.
Frequently asked questions
Fabric or Forge? Which should you pick in 2026?
It depends on the mods you want to use. Fabric is lighter, updates faster and has the best optimization (Sodium). Pick Fabric if you want Sodium, Iris or lightweight modpacks. NeoForge (the successor to Forge) has more mods: Create, Tinkers' Construct, Mekanism, Immersive Engineering. Pick NeoForge for heavy tech modpacks. You can't mix Fabric mods with Forge mods: they're different platforms.
Do mods work on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?
No. The mods on this list only work on Java Edition. Bedrock Edition has its own add-on system (Add-Ons), which is far more limited. If you want to mod Minecraft, Java Edition is the only sensible choice.
Can I use mods on a server?
Most mods have to be installed on both the client and the server. The exceptions are purely client-side mods like Sodium, JourneyMap and JEI, which work without any changes on the server. Mods that add blocks and mechanics (Create, Mekanism, Botania) need the same mod on the server.
How many mods can I have at once?
As many as your RAM allows. Light modpacks have 20-50 mods, medium ones 100-200, and heavy ones (such as All The Mods or Create Above and Beyond) over 300. Rule of thumb: 4 GB of RAM for 50 mods, 8 GB for 200, 12+ GB for 300+. Set the RAM allocation in your launcher (JVM Arguments: -Xmx8G).
Where can I download mods safely?
There are two safe sources: Modrinth and CurseForge. Never download mods from random websites, forums or YouTube videos with links in the description. Stolen mods often contain malware.
