Fabric API
About Fabric API
Fabric API is an essential library that provides standard programming interfaces (APIs) for mods that run on Fabric Loader. If you install any mod on Fabric, in 90% of cases you also need Fabric API.
Under the hood, Fabric API is a set of "hooks": points where mods can interact with the game. Instead of every mod hacking into Minecraft on its own, Fabric API gives them a standardized way to add blocks, items, biomes, crafting recipes, effects and much more.
For you as a player, this comes down to one simple rule: install Fabric Loader, then Fabric API, then all the mods you want. Fabric API is the foundation that all the other mods stand on.
Keep in mind that Fabric API doesn't change anything about gameplay by itself. It doesn't add any blocks, items or mechanics: it's a purely technical library. After you install it, you won't notice any difference until you install mods that use it.
Fabric API gets updated very quickly, often within hours of a new Minecraft release. That's one of the main advantages the Fabric ecosystem has over Forge: how fast it adapts to new versions of the game.
Installing it is trivial: download the .jar file from Modrinth or CurseForge and drop it into the .minecraft/mods/ folder. If you use a launcher like Prism, GDLauncher or ATLauncher, you can install Fabric API straight from the launcher's mod browser.
Fabric API is open source and developed by the FabricMC team. It has hundreds of contributors and is one of the most active projects in the Minecraft modding ecosystem.

How to install Fabric API
Download Fabric API from Modrinth (modrinth.com/mod/fabric-api). Make sure the version matches your Minecraft version. Drop the .jar file into the .minecraft/mods/ folder. If you use Prism Launcher or GDLauncher, you can install Fabric API straight from the built-in mod browser.
- Install the right mod loader: Fabric. You can download Fabric from fabricmc.net.
- Download Fabric API from its official page. Make sure the version matches your Minecraft version (1.14 - 1.21.5).
- Copy the downloaded
.jarfile into the.minecraft/mods/folder. Don't unpack the file. - Launch Minecraft with your loader's profile. If the game crashes, check
.minecraft/logs/latest.log: the most common problem is a version mismatch.
Compatibility
Editor's review
Fabric API isn't a mod you install for fun: it's the foundation of the Fabric ecosystem. Without it, most mods simply won't work. Installing it is trivial and it adds zero overhead. If you play on Fabric, Fabric API should be the first thing in your mods/ folder, right next to Sodium.
