Minecraft shaders: the complete 2026 guide
A ranking of the 15 best shaders, step-by-step installation instructions, an OptiFine vs Iris comparison and hardware requirements. Everything you need to make your Minecraft look spectacular.
What are shaders in Minecraft?
Shaders (also called shader packs) are graphics mods that completely change how Minecraft renders the world. Instead of simple, flat lighting and blocky water, shaders add dynamic shadows cast by the sun and moon, realistic water with waves and reflections, volumetric clouds that look like a real sky, global illumination (light bouncing off walls), godrays (beams of light breaking through leaves) and dozens of other visual improvements.
Technically, shaders are programs written in GLSL (the OpenGL Shading Language) that replace Minecraft's default rendering pipeline. Instead of one simple way of drawing the scene, a shader performs dozens of extra calculations on the graphics card, which is why your FPS drops. The more advanced the shader, the more computing power the GPU needs.
Shaders only work in Minecraft Java Edition. To run them you need one of two tools: Iris Shaders (a mod for Fabric/NeoForge, the recommended option in 2026) or OptiFine (a standalone mod, the classic solution). Shaders run on the client side, so you don't have to install anything on the server, and other players on the server won't see your shaders. You will find more of the basics in our shader guide.
What do shaders change in the game?
- Lighting and shadows: dynamic shadows move with the position of the sun. A torch lights up its surroundings with a warm, orange glow. Light passes through stained glass.
- Water: waves, reflections of the sky and surroundings, transparency that depends on depth, caustics on the bottom (patterns of light).
- Sky and atmosphere: volumetric 3D clouds, realistic sunsets and sunrises, fog that depends on the biome, the aurora borealis.
- Vegetation: leaves and grass sway in the wind, flowers move gently.
- Weather effects: rain gives surfaces a sheen, wet blocks glisten, snow builds up on blocks.
- Post-processing: bloom (a glow around bright sources), depth of field (blur in the distance), motion blur, cinematic tone mapping.
How to install shaders in Minecraft
There are two main ways to run shaders in Minecraft Java Edition. In 2026 we strongly recommend the Iris Shaders method: it is faster, gives better FPS and works fully with other mods. OptiFine still works, but it is losing popularity to Iris. Below is a step-by-step guide for both methods.
Method 1: Iris Shaders (recommended)
Iris Shaders is an open-source mod for the Fabric platform that supports nearly all shader packs compatible with OptiFine. Iris automatically brings along Sodium, an optimization mod that significantly improves FPS.
- Install Fabric: download the installer from fabricmc.net. Run the .jar file, choose a Minecraft version (for example 26.3) and click "Install". Fabric creates a new profile in the Minecraft launcher. Detailed instructions: how to install mods.
- Download Iris Shaders: go to irisshaders.dev and click "Download". You can also get Iris from Modrinth. Iris pulls in Sodium automatically.
- Put Iris in the mods folder: copy the
iris-*.jarfile into the.minecraft/mods/folder. If you don't know where that folder is, open the Minecraft launcher, click "Installations", then the folder icon next to the Fabric profile. - Download a shader pack: pick a shader from the ranking below and download the .zip file from its official page. Don't unzip the archive.
- Put the shader in the shaderpacks folder: copy the .zip file to
.minecraft/shaderpacks/. If the folder doesn't exist, create it by hand or open it from inside the game: Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs → Open Shader Pack Folder. - Activate the shader: launch Minecraft with the Fabric profile, go to Video Settings → Shader Packs, pick a shader from the list and click "Done". That's it!
Method 2: OptiFine (classic)
OptiFine is a standalone mod that doesn't need Fabric or Forge. It is closed source and updated more slowly than Iris, but it still works properly with most shaders. As of October 2026, OptiFine has no release for Minecraft 26.3, so on that game version you run shaders through Iris.
- Download OptiFine: go to optifine.net/downloads and download the version that matches your Minecraft version. Watch out for fake ad buttons: the real button is "Download" on the page with "OptiFine_1.21.x_HD_U_xx.jar".
- Install OptiFine: double-click the downloaded .jar file. Java runs the installer, which automatically creates an "OptiFine" profile in the Minecraft launcher. If the file doesn't open, right-click it → "Open with" → Java.
- Download and place a shader: exactly as in the Iris method, download the shader's .zip file and put it in
.minecraft/shaderpacks/. - Activate the shader: launch Minecraft with the OptiFine profile, go to Options → Video Settings → Shaders, pick a shader and click "Done".
Where is the shaderpacks folder?
The location of the shaderpacks folder depends on your operating system:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\shaderpacks\(paste it into the File Explorer address bar) - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/shaderpacks/ - Linux:
~/.minecraft/shaderpacks/
If you use another instance (for example MultiMC or Prism Launcher), you will find the shaderpacks folder inside the instance directory, for example instances/name/.minecraft/shaderpacks/.
You will find a comparison of both methods in the OptiFine vs Iris section below, and an interactive shader comparison in our shader comparison tool.

Hardware requirements for shaders
Shaders mainly load the graphics card (GPU). The CPU and RAM matter less: if Minecraft runs smoothly without shaders, your processor and memory are enough. What counts is the GPU and how much VRAM it has.
Minimum requirements: lightweight shaders
To run lightweight shaders such as MakeUp Ultra Fast or Nostalgia, you need:
- GPU: Intel UHD 630 / NVIDIA GT 1030 / AMD RX 550 (2 GB VRAM)
- Expected FPS: 30-50 at 1080p, render distance 8
- Notes: Turn shadows off or set them to minimum. Render distance of 6-8 chunks.
Recommended: mid-weight shaders (BSL, Complementary)
Most popular shaders, such as BSL, Complementary Reimagined or Sildur's Vibrant, need:
- GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB / AMD RX 580 8 GB (or better)
- Expected FPS: 50-80 at 1080p, render distance 12
- Notes: 6 GB of VRAM is the comfortable minimum. Medium/High profiles run smoothly on this class of hardware.
High requirements: heavy shaders (SEUS PTGI, Kappa, Rethinking Voxels)
Path tracing, voxel lighting and full PBR need far more power:
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 12 GB / AMD RX 6700 XT (or better)
- Expected FPS: 30-60 at 1080p, render distance 10-12
- Notes: SEUS PTGI needs an RTX 3070+ to run smoothly. 8+ GB of VRAM is a must. At 4K even an RTX 4090 drops below 60 FPS with PTGI.
How to improve performance with shaders
- Lower the render distance: this has the biggest effect. 8-10 chunks instead of 16-32 will double your FPS.
- Lower the shadow resolution: in the shader settings, change the shadow resolution from 2048 to 1024 or 512.
- Turn off effects you don't need: motion blur, depth of field and bloom can be turned off in the shader options without a visible difference in quality.
- Use Iris instead of OptiFine: Iris with Sodium gives 10-30% more FPS than OptiFine with the same shader.
- Install Lithium: this Fabric mod optimizes the game engine independently of shaders.
You will find more tips in our guides: OptiFine vs Sodium and graphics settings optimization.
OptiFine vs Iris Shaders: the 2026 comparison
For years OptiFine was the only way to run shaders in Minecraft Java Edition. In 2020 Iris Shaders appeared, an open-source alternative built on Fabric and Sodium. In 2026 Iris is clearly the better choice for most players. Here is a detailed comparison.
| Feature | Iris Shaders | OptiFine |
|---|---|---|
| FPS (without a shader) | Very high (Sodium) | Medium-High |
| FPS (with a shader) | 10-30% better | Baseline |
| Mod compatibility | Full (Fabric ecosystem) | Limited (conflicts) |
| Update speed | Fast (open source) | Slow (1 developer) |
| Shader support | ~95% of packs | 100% of packs |
| Connected Textures | Via the Continuity mod | Built in |
| Zoom | Via the Zoomify mod | Built in (C key) |
| Dynamic lights | Via LambDynamicLights | Built in |
| Platform | Fabric / NeoForge | Standalone / Forge |
| License | Open source (LGPL-3.0) | Closed source |
| Installation | Requires Fabric Loader | Double-click the .jar |
Our recommendation
Choose Iris Shaders if you use or plan to use other Fabric mods (Create, JEI, Sodium), care about the highest FPS, want quick updates after new Minecraft versions release, or prefer open-source solutions.
Stay with OptiFine if you don't want to install Fabric, use a mod that requires OptiFine (for example older resource packs with connected textures), or need 100% shader compatibility (a few older packs work only on OptiFine, such as SEUS PTGI and Continuum).
As of October 2026: Iris supports Minecraft 26.3 from version 1.11.5 on Fabric (September 15, 2026), and from 1.11.7 on NeoForge too. The latest stable OptiFine release is HD U J9 for 1.21.11, from February 5, 2026. For 26.1.2 and 26.2 OptiFine only has preview builds, and for 26.3 it has none yet. Among the shaders in the ranking, releases marked for 26.3 already exist for BSL, Complementary and MakeUp Ultra Fast, among others.
You will find a detailed performance comparison of the two in our article OptiFine vs Sodium.
Shaders on Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Minecraft Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, consoles, mobile) uses a completely different graphics system than Java Edition. Since update 1.18.30, Bedrock has moved to the RenderDragon engine, which replaced the old rendering pipeline and stopped most earlier shaders from working.
What are RenderDragon shaders?
RenderDragon shaders are graphics packs made specifically for Bedrock Edition's new engine. They are not compatible with Iris or OptiFine, since it is a completely different format. What RenderDragon shaders can do is limited compared with Java Edition:
- Available effects: dynamic shadows (limited), colored lighting, altered tone, weather effects, improved water.
- Unavailable effects: volumetric clouds, path tracing, advanced bloom, PBR. The RenderDragon engine doesn't support these techniques.
- Installation: a .mcpack file. Double-click it on Windows, or import it through the app on mobile.
Popular RenderDragon shaders
- Newb X Legacy: a lightweight shader with nice shadows and colored lighting. Works on mobile and Windows.
- Harmony Voxel: voxel-style colored block light for Bedrock. Needs a stronger device.
- SUSPENDED Shaders: an advanced shader with dynamic shadows and improved water.
- YSS Special Edition: one of the best-looking RenderDragon shaders, with realistic lighting.
RTX on Bedrock (Windows)
Minecraft Bedrock on Windows 10/11 supports native ray tracing on NVIDIA RTX cards. It is an official Mojang/NVIDIA feature: not a shader, but a built-in solution. It needs an RTX 2060 or newer card and an RTX resource pack from the Minecraft Marketplace. Ray tracing on Bedrock gives much better results than any shader on Java, but it is limited to selected maps and resource packs with PBR support.
If top graphics are your priority, Java Edition with shaders offers more options and a bigger community. Bedrock with RTX gives a better visual result but less flexibility. Edition comparison: Java vs Bedrock.
Frequently asked questions about Minecraft shaders
? What are shaders in Minecraft?
Shaders (shader packs) are graphics mods that change how Minecraft Java Edition renders the world. They add dynamic shadows, realistic water, volumetric clouds, global illumination and many other visual effects. They run on the client side and need no changes on the server.
? How do I install shaders in Minecraft?
The easiest way is through Iris Shaders: download Iris from irisshaders.dev, install it on Fabric, then put the shader's .zip file in the .minecraft/shaderpacks/ folder. In the game, turn the shader on in Video Settings → Shader Packs. Alternatively, you can use OptiFine.
? Do shaders work on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?
The shaders on this list work only on Java Edition. Bedrock Edition uses the RenderDragon engine, which has limited shader support. Simpler graphics packs exist (so-called RenderDragon shaders), but they are not compatible with Iris or OptiFine.
? Iris or OptiFine: which should I pick?
In 2026 we strongly recommend Iris Shaders. Iris uses Sodium as its rendering backend, which gives higher FPS than OptiFine, full compatibility with Fabric mods and faster updates. OptiFine is still an option for players who don't want to install Fabric.
? Which shader is the lightest?
MakeUp Ultra Fast is designed specifically for weak computers and runs even on integrated Intel UHD 630 graphics. It gives a smooth 40-60 FPS on the weakest hardware. Sildur's Vibrant Lite and Nostalgia Shader are alternatives.
? Do shaders reduce FPS?
Yes, every shader lowers FPS because it needs extra calculations on the graphics card. Lightweight packs (MakeUp, Nostalgia) cut FPS by 10-20%, medium ones (BSL, Complementary) by 30-50%, and heavy ones (SEUS PTGI, Continuum) can take 60-80% of your frames. The best way to improve things is to lower the render distance to 8-10 chunks.
? Can I use shaders on a multiplayer server?
Yes. Shaders run on the client side and need no changes on the server. Every player can use their own shaders regardless of the server's settings. They give no advantage in gameplay.
? Where can I download shaders for Minecraft?
The best sources are Modrinth (modrinth.com/shaders) and CurseForge (curseforge.com/minecraft/shaders). Avoid random sites: downloading from unknown sources risks viruses. Some shaders (SEUS PTGI, Continuum RT) are available through the authors' Patreon.
