Minecraft shader comparison
Compare performance, compatibility, and features of the most popular shader packs.
Shaders are graphics mods that completely change how Minecraft looks: dynamic shadows, realistic lighting, volumetric fog, water reflections, and plenty of other visual effects. In 2026 they are one of the most popular ways to upgrade the game's visuals, and the creator community offers dozens of packs, from lightweight ones that run on integrated graphics to advanced path-traced packs comparable to ray tracing in AAA games.
To use shaders in Minecraft Java Edition, you need one of two shader mods: Iris Shaders (runs on Fabric/Quilt and is the recommended option for its better performance and mod compatibility) or OptiFine (a standalone mod, older but still popular). Most modern shader packs support both, though some advanced features, such as voxel-based colored block light, only work with Iris.
Our comparison tool lets you filter the 15 most popular shader packs by compatibility (Iris/OptiFine), visual style (realistic, fantasy, cinematic, minimal), and performance on three hardware tiers. You can pick two shaders and compare them side by side, with a visual FPS comparison, a feature list, and download links. From an old laptop to a new desktop with an RTX card, you'll find a shader pack that suits your PC.

Frequently asked questions
How do I install shaders in Minecraft?
The easiest way is to install Iris Shaders together with Fabric Loader (or Quilt). Download the Fabric installer from fabricmc.net, run it, then drop the Iris file into the mods/ folder. Shader packs (.zip files) go in the .minecraft/shaderpacks/ folder. You can also install Iris with the official installer from irisshaders.dev. Alternatively, use OptiFine: download it from optifine.net and install it like a regular mod.
Iris or OptiFine: which is better for shaders?
In 2026, Iris is the recommended choice. It gives you better performance (often 20-30% more FPS), full compatibility with Fabric/Quilt mods, and access to advanced features like voxel colored light. OptiFine still works well, but it is not compatible with Fabric and doesn't support the newest shader techniques.
Which shader is best for a low-end PC?
For weaker PCs we recommend MakeUp Ultra Fast. It was designed with performance in mind and runs even on integrated graphics. Other good options are Nostalgia Shader and BSL Shaders on the Low profile. Use the "My PC: Low-end" filter in our comparison tool to see every playable option.
Do shaders work on Bedrock Edition?
No. Shaders based on Iris and OptiFine only work in Java Edition. Bedrock Edition uses a different rendering system and doesn't support the same shader packs. Bedrock has its own resource packs with visual effects, but they don't reach the quality of Java shaders.
How many FPS do you lose with shaders?
It depends on the shader and your hardware. Light packs like MakeUp Ultra Fast can cost as little as 10-20% of your FPS, while advanced path-traced shaders (SEUS PTGI, Continuum) can cut FPS by 70-80%. Our comparison tool shows estimated FPS ranges for three hardware tiers, which should help you pick a shader that fits your PC.
