Hytale, the sandbox RPG from Hypixel Studios, will get its first big content update since early access began on October 12, 2026. Chapter 1 introduces a new goblin faction, the game's first handcrafted dungeon and a multi-phase boss called the Gobliterator. The studio also added two extras for launch: a cash challenge for streamers and a mechanic for giving game copies to friends.
What Chapter 1 changes
As Simon, Hytale's creative director, explained in a post on the studio's blog, the team deliberately held back on new story content for most of early access so it could first polish the game's foundations: building, exploration and Creative Mode. Chapter 1 is the first in a series of big content packs expanding the Cursebreaker Arc in Exploration Mode.
The centerpiece of the update is an underground dungeon described as the first in Hytale to be fully handcrafted rather than procedurally generated. The location is meant to be a sprawling cave complex wrapped in sickly green fog, ending in a showdown with the goblin mech Gobliterator. The boss fight has multiple phases and relies on mechanics familiar from classic raid encounters: the boss uses armor plating and fire area attacks.
The goblin faction and the Goblin Breach
Goblins become the game's first fully fleshed-out enemy faction. The team describes them as varied characters with their own personalities and combat roles, including an elite variant called the Feastmaster, which calls in reinforcements and deals area damage. Alongside them comes a new world mechanic: the Goblin Breach, a temporary event that opens a portal to biomes controlled by goblins.
- Goblin Breach content regenerates with every visit, so exploration never looks the same twice
- Players have to cope with growing "void pressure," which eventually kicks them out of the area
- The event demands a tactical approach to the time spent inside the portal
New gear and a rune system
Chapter 1 adds several gadgets that change how you get around the map and fight. The inventory gets rocket boots, a mechanical hookshot, a glider, a mining drill and a spyglass. Boats get an improved movement system, and players will be able to carry larger objects: chests, barrels and, in the future, downed teammates too.
The second big addition is the Rune Abilities system. The team describes it as a way to add RPG-style depth without taking away the freedom that defines a sandbox. "You'll be able to equip your Avatar with runes that grant new active combat abilities," the studio explains, adding that runes can be combined with modifiers and react to their surroundings, which opens the door to creative combos.
A $15,000 challenge and free game copies
Hypixel Studios head Simon Collins-Laflamme announced a personal challenge for the streamer community: "I'll donate $15,000 to the first streamer who kills the Gobliterator." The conditions are harsh: the fight must be done in hardcore mode, with no armor or potions, using only the iron weapons available in Exploration Mode, solo and without Creative Mode, and the whole attempt has to be livestreamed so the run can be verified, as Attractmode reports.
The second piece of news is for owners of the priciest edition. As PCGamesN revealed, owners of the Cursebreaker Edition, which costs $83.99 compared to $24.99 for the standard version and $41.99 for the supporter pack, will receive a free copy of the game to give to friends with every chapter released before the final 1.0 version. "For every Hytale early access chapter we release, Cursebreaker Edition owners will get one extra game copy to give away," Collins-Laflamme explained. In other words, if six chapters arrive before 1.0, an owner of this edition will be able to give away six extra copies in total.
Why this matters to Minecraft players
Hytale has drawn the Minecraft community's interest for years, because it grew out of the people behind the Hypixel server, who started designing their own game after Mojang's 2014 EULA changes restricting server monetization. After the Riot Games acquisition, the studio's closure in 2025 and the rights being bought back by co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme, Hytale entered early access on January 13, 2026 and quickly passed a million players.
For people looking for an alternative for building and exploration in the style of Minecraft Java Edition, Chapter 1 is the first serious test of whether Hytale can regularly deliver new story content, and not just a sandbox foundation. The developers are funding the studio privately, with a declared ten-year commitment and no outside investors, which is meant to keep work on future chapters stable.
