Kappa Shader
About Kappa Shader
Kappa Shader is a project by RRe36, a developer known for the technical perfection of their shaders. Kappa aims for photographic realism. That means light behaves the way it does in the real world: the sun is white (not yellow), shadows get softer the farther they fall from the object casting them, and the sky changes color correctly over the day-night cycle.
Kappa uses PBR (Physically Based Rendering) to calculate how light interacts with materials. Wooden blocks scatter light softly and warmly, stone has a subtle sheen on its edges, and metal blocks reflect their surroundings with just the right sharpness. The effect is subtle, but once you've seen it, it's hard to go back to vanilla.
Kappa's volumetric clouds are among the best of any shader. They have realistic shapes, cast correct shadows on the ground and change with the weather and the time of day. A sunset with clouds in Kappa is well worth seeing.
Kappa also has a KappaPT variant with full path tracing, available to patrons on Patreon. KappaPT is one of the best path tracing implementations in any shader, rivaling SEUS PTGI but with better compatibility (it works on Iris).
The standard version of Kappa is free and works on both Iris and OptiFine. Its hardware requirements are moderately high. On a GTX 1660 you'll get a smooth 40-60 FPS, but for full comfort you need something around an RTX 3060.
Features and effects
Kappa Shader adds the following graphical effects that transform how Minecraft looks:
- Physically based lighting (PBR)
- Realistic atmosphere
- Advanced shadows
- Volumetric clouds
- Realistic water
- ACES gamut compression
- PT variant (path tracing)
Pros and cons
Pros
- Photographic realism
- Some of the best clouds of any shader
- Full PBR
- KappaPT variant with path tracing
- Works on Iris
Cons
- Above-average hardware requirements
- KappaPT is paid
- Smaller community than Complementary
- Takes some experience to configure
Hardware requirements
Kappa Shader falls into the balanced performance tier. Below are estimated FPS figures for different hardware setups, measured at 1080p with a render distance of 12 chunks.
| GPU class | Example cards | Estimated FPS |
|---|---|---|
| Weak / integrated | Intel UHD 630, GTX 750 Ti, RX 460 | 15-30 FPS |
| Mid-range | GTX 1660, RX 5600 XT, RTX 3050 | 40-60 FPS |
| Strong | RTX 3070, RX 6800 XT, RTX 4060 Ti | 70-110 FPS |
Minimum graphics card: GTX 1060 / RX 580. Recommended: RTX 3060 / RX 6600 XT. If your FPS drops below 30, lower your render distance to 8 chunks and turn off volumetric clouds in the shader settings. You'll find more tips in our shader optimization guide.
How to install Kappa Shader
Kappa is free on Modrinth. The KappaPT variant requires a subscription to RRe36's Patreon. Put the .zip file in .minecraft/shaderpacks/.
- Make sure you have Fabric with Iris Shaders installed.
- Download Kappa Shader from the official site. The file is a .zip archive.
- Don't unzip the archive. Copy the .zip file into the
.minecraft/shaderpacks/folder. - Launch Minecraft, go to Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs and select Kappa Shader from the list.
- Click "Shader Pack Settings" (if available) and adjust the settings to your needs.

Comparison with alternatives
Here's how Kappa Shader compares with related shaders:
| Shader | Style | FPS (mid-range GPU) | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kappa Shader (this shader) | Realistic | 40-60 FPS | 4.5 |
| SEUS PTGI | Cinematic | 20-35 FPS | 4.0 |
| Continuum | Cinematic | 20-40 FPS | 4.0 |
| Photon Shader | Realistic | 45-65 FPS | 4.5 |
Frequently asked questions about Kappa Shader
Does Kappa Shader work on Iris?
Yes, Kappa Shader is fully compatible with Iris Shaders. We recommend Iris over OptiFine for its higher performance (Sodium) and compatibility with Fabric mods.
What graphics card do I need for Kappa Shader?
The minimum graphics card is the GTX 1060 / RX 580. For comfortable gameplay (60+ FPS), we recommend the RTX 3060 / RX 6600 XT. If you don't know which card you have, press Win + R, type dxdiag and check the "Display" tab.
Can I use Kappa Shader with a texture pack?
Yes. Shaders work great with texture packs. Pairing Kappa Shader with a PBR pack (such as Patrix or Stratum) gives especially impressive results, because the shader can use the extra material information the pack provides.
Does Kappa Shader work on servers?
Yes. Shaders run only on the client side and don't require any changes on the server. You can use Kappa Shader on any server, regardless of its configuration.
