MrCrayfish's Furniture Mod: furniture and home furnishings

Over 80 functional pieces of furniture that turn a square box into a real home.

What is MrCrayfish's Furniture Mod?

Vanilla Minecraft has one serious limitation: you cannot put normal furniture in a house. A chair is stairs and a sign. A table is a fence and a pressure plate. MrCrayfish's Furniture Mod puts an end to these makeshift solutions and adds real furniture with dedicated 3D models, textures and functions.

The mod is one of the oldest decoration mods that is still actively developed. Its author, MrCrayfish, regularly adds new furniture and keeps the mod compatible with new Minecraft versions. The current version is Refurbished, a complete rewrite of the mod from scratch with new models and support for Fabric.

The key point is that the furniture in this mod is not only decoration. A stove lets you cook without a furnace. A television plays animations. Lamps give off light. These are real pieces of furniture with functions, not display models.

Furniture categories

The mod organizes furniture into several themed categories. Each contains from a few to a dozen or so items, and all of them are crafted from vanilla materials.

Kitchen

A fridge, a stove, kitchen counters, a sink, a toaster, a trash can, and upper and lower cabinets in different color variants. A kitchen built with Furniture Mod looks like it came out of an IKEA catalog.

Bedroom

A desk and lamps. Furniture is available in variants made from different types of wood.

Bathroom

A toilet, a bathtub and a sink.

Garden and patio

A grill, a decorative fence and a mailbox. The mailbox works as a real mailbox on servers: players send items to each other!

Electronics

A television and a ceiling fan that spins as a decoration.

Living room and dining room

A sofa, a dining table and chairs.

Installation

MrCrayfish's Furniture Mod requires a mod loader. Here are the steps for both supported platforms:

  • NeoForge: Install NeoForge for your Minecraft version. Download the Furniture Mod .jar file from Modrinth or CurseForge. Put it in the .minecraft/mods/ folder. Launch the game with the NeoForge profile.
  • Fabric: Install Fabric Loader + Fabric API. Download the Fabric version of the mod (the file with "fabric" in its name). Put it in .minecraft/mods/ together with Fabric API. Launch with the Fabric profile.
Note: The Refurbished version is a rewrite from scratch. Worlds with furniture from older versions (6.x and earlier) may have missing blocks after the update. Back up your world before switching to Refurbished.

Compatibility and performance

Furniture Mod is surprisingly light for the number of blocks it adds. The furniture is made of ordinary blocks with custom models, so it does not generate ticks the way machines from technology mods do. You can fill a house with furniture without a visible drop in FPS.

The mod works well with other popular decoration mods. If you are looking for even more ways to finish your interiors, combine it with Create (industrial decorations), Chisels & Bits (micro-blocks) or Macaw's Furniture (alternative furniture styles).

On servers the mod must be installed on both sides (client and server). It does not negatively affect server TPS, because the furniture does not run calculations every tick. The mailbox, which passes items between players, is the one piece with extra functionality.

Tip: Furniture Mod works well alongside OptiFine or Sodium.

Why install Furniture Mod

Building houses is one of the most popular activities in Minecraft, but vanilla offers very few options for furnishing interiors. A player who spent 3 hours on the outside of a house walks in and has... a bed, a chest and a crafting table. Furniture Mod changes that completely.

The mod is especially popular with roleplayers and on survival servers where players build a shared town. Furnished houses look far better in screenshots and videos. If you play on an SMP and build together with others, this mod should be a must.

A big plus: the crafting recipes are reasonable. You do not need diamonds or rare resources, because furniture is crafted from what you have from day one. That makes the mod useful right from the start of the game, not only in the endgame.

Comparison with other decoration mods

MrCrayfish's Furniture Mod is not the only furniture mod, but it is the most popular and the most complete. Here is how it compares with the alternatives:

  • Macaw's Furniture: a newer mod with fewer items, but more realistic models. The two mods are compatible and complement each other well.
  • Decocraft: a huge number of decorations (over 300), but most are purely visual models without functions. Furniture Mod wins on functionality.
  • Adorn (Fabric): a lightweight furniture mod made specifically for Fabric. Fewer options, but ideal if you want the bare minimum and care about performance.
  • Another Furniture: minimalist, vanilla-style furniture. For those who do not want modded furniture to look too "foreign" next to Minecraft's blocks.

FAQ

Does MrCrayfish's Furniture Mod work on Fabric?

Yes. The Refurbished version of the mod is available on both NeoForge and Fabric. Older versions (up to 6.x) worked only on Forge.

How many pieces of furniture does the mod add?

Over 80 unique items. Counting the color and wood variants, that is several hundred combinations. Each update adds more furniture.

Can you sit on the furniture?

Yes. Chairs and sofas let players sit down by right-clicking. The character sits at the right height with the correct animation.

Does the furniture work on multiplayer servers?

Yes. The mod must be installed on both the client and the server. The furniture does not put load on the server because it does not run calculations every tick. The mailbox lets players send items to each other.
