Best Minecraft mods in 2026
Out of the tens of thousands of mods on Modrinth and CurseForge, we picked the ones that are really worth installing. They range from performance mods through maps and shaders to huge mods that greatly expand gameplay. Every mod on this list is tested and actively developed. As of October 2026, versions for Minecraft 26.3 already exist for Sodium, Lithium, FerriteCore, Iris, JourneyMap, Xaero's maps, AppleSkin and Mod Menu, among others, while Create and Cobblemon are only available for 1.21.1 for now. If you don't know how to install mods, start with our installation guide. You can download the latest version of Java Edition here.
Optimization
Optimization mods should be the first thing you install. Vanilla Minecraft isn't optimized all that well: even on powerful computers FPS can drop below 60 at a larger render distance. These three mods solve that problem.
Sodium
Fabric / NeoForge / QuiltRewrites Minecraft's rendering engine from scratch, delivering 3-5x higher FPS. An absolute must-have for every player. Open source and fully compatible with other Fabric mods. It replaces OptiFine for performance, and combined with Iris Shaders it also supports shaders.
Lithium
Fabric / NeoForge / QuiltOptimizes the game's internal logic: physics, mob AI, terrain generation and the tick system. It doesn't change any game behavior (vanilla-compatible), but cuts MSPT (milliseconds per tick) by up to 40-50%. Essential on multiplayer servers.
FerriteCore
Fabric / Forge / NeoForge / QuiltReduces RAM usage by 30-50% by optimizing how block states and models are stored. Essential for big modpacks with hundreds of blocks, where memory usage can exceed 8 GB without optimization.
Shaders
Shaders are graphics mods that add realistic lighting, shadows, water reflections, volumetric fog and atmospheric effects. To run them you need a mod that loads shaders, and in 2026 the standard is Iris Shaders. You can read more about shaders in our dedicated guide.
Iris Shaders
Fabric / NeoForge / QuiltA modern alternative to OptiFine for running shaders. It's compatible with Sodium (using it as the rendering backend), so shaders run with better performance than on OptiFine. It supports most popular shader packs: BSL, Complementary, SEUS and others.
Maps and navigation
Vanilla Minecraft only offers a basic map that you craft by hand from paper and a compass. Map mods add automatically generated minimaps, full-screen world maps, waypoints and many other navigation features.
JourneyMap
Fabric / Forge / NeoForgeThe most feature-rich map mod for Minecraft. It shows a real-time map in the corner of the screen (minimap) and a full-screen map with waypoints, cave layers and an export option. You can also open the map in a web browser.
Xaero's Minimap + World Map
Fabric / Forge / NeoForgeA lighter alternative to JourneyMap. Xaero's Minimap is an elegant vanilla-style minimap with a compass and waypoints. Xaero's World Map adds a full-screen map with automatic terrain discovery. Both mods are lightweight and don't hurt your FPS.
Adventure and new content
These mods add entirely new layers of gameplay, from mechanical factories to magical gardens and catching creatures. Each of them is so extensive that it could be a game of its own. Many of them also add new biomes and change the item enchanting system.
Cobblemon
Fabric / NeoForgeAn ambitious mod that turns Minecraft into a Pokémon game. It adds over 300 creatures to catch, train and battle in a turn-based system. Cobblemon is carefully integrated with the Minecraft world: Pokémon spawn in fitting biomes and interact with their surroundings.
Create
Fabric / Forge / NeoForgeA revolutionary tech mod that adds mechanical components: gearboxes, belts, presses and hundreds of other parts. It lets you build working factories, trains, mills and machines without redstone. Visually stunning and intuitive to use.
Botania
Fabric / Forge / NeoForgeA magic mod with a botanical theme. You generate mana (magical energy) with flowers and use it to power magical devices, weapons and tools. Botania is known for its elegant mechanics: it doesn't use traditional interfaces and relies on interactions in the game world instead.
Quality of life (QoL)
QoL mods are small improvements that don't fundamentally change gameplay but make it more convenient. Showing hidden information, better inventory management, clearer interfaces: once you've installed these mods, you won't want to go back to vanilla.
Inventory Profiles Next
Fabric / Forge / NeoForgeAdvanced inventory management: automatic sorting, one-click transfers between chests, slot locking and inventory profiles. It dramatically speeds up organizing items, especially in modpacks with hundreds of new items.
AppleSkin
Fabric / Forge / NeoForge / QuiltShows hidden food information: saturation level, hunger points restored and the value of every meal. In vanilla Minecraft this data is completely hidden. AppleSkin makes the food system transparent and easy to understand.
WTHIT (What The Hell Is That)
Fabric / NeoForge / QuiltShows a tooltip with information about the block or mob you're looking at: its name, ID, source mod, light level and other data. The successor to the legendary Waila and Hwyla mods. Indispensable in modpacks that add hundreds of new blocks.
Textures and resource packs
Resource packs aren't mods in the traditional sense: they don't need a mod loader and work on any version of Minecraft. They change the look of blocks, items, the GUI and other visual elements. You can read more about resource packs in our dedicated guide.
Faithful 32x
Resource pack (any loader)A classic resource pack that doubles the resolution of vanilla textures from 16x to 32x pixels. It keeps Minecraft's original style while adding sharpness and detail. Ideal for players who want nicer graphics without changing the feel of the game.
Stay True
Resource pack (any loader)A gentle tweak of vanilla textures that adds variation: different variants of grass, leaves, stone and wood. It makes the world look more natural without drastic style changes. One of the highest-rated packs on CurseForge.
HUD and interface
Interface mods improve how information is displayed in the game, from the debug screen to the mod list. They don't affect gameplay, but they noticeably improve comfort.
BetterF3
Fabric / NeoForge / QuiltCompletely redesigns the debug screen (F3): colored sections, readable labels, the ability to hide unnecessary info and add your own. It turns a chaotic wall of text into a clear, organized information panel.
Mod Menu
Fabric / QuiltAdds a screen listing all installed mods with their versions, authors and links. It gives you access to individual mods' settings straight from the game menu. A basic mod that should be installed on every Fabric instance.
Mods on servers
Many of the mods listed here also work on Minecraft servers. Optimization mods such as Lithium are especially useful on multiplayer servers, where performance is critical. If you run a Fabric server, you can download and set it up in a few minutes.
Keep in mind that client-side mods (Iris Shaders, BetterF3, Mod Menu) don't need to be installed on the server, because they only work on the player's side. Server-side mods (Lithium, Carpet) optimize server logic and don't need to be installed by players.
Recommended starter set
If you don't know where to start, install the following mods on Fabric: Sodium + Lithium + FerriteCore (performance), Iris Shaders (shaders), Mod Menu (mod list), AppleSkin (food info) and BetterF3 (a readable debug screen). This set dramatically improves performance and comfort without fundamentally changing gameplay. You'll find installation instructions in our mod installation guide.
