15 best Minecraft data packs in 2026
Data packs don't need a mod loader, install in a minute and work on servers without any setup on the players' side. Below are 15 data packs that really change the game for the better, from entirely new terrain generation, through quality-of-life improvements, to new combat and progression systems. Every pack on this list is free, and each card shows which Minecraft versions it supports. Not sure how to install a data pack? Check our installation guide.
World generation
Terralith
1.18.2 - 1.21+Over 95 new biomes added to the world generator without removing the vanilla ones. The terrain is dramatically more varied: rocky cliffs, deep canyons, dense bamboo jungles and stone arches over the ocean. Terralith needs no mods and works on every server. If you install only one data pack, make it this one.
Amplified Nether
1.18.2 - 1.21+From the same creator as Terralith, but for the Nether. The Nether gets huge caves, massive basalt columns, lava waterfalls and tunnels that seem to go on forever. It turns into a real challenge to explore instead of a boring, flat expanse. Works great with Terralith.
Nullscape
1.18.2 - 1.21+The third pack in the Stardust Labs trilogy, it reworks the generation of the End. Instead of empty islands of End Stone, you get varied biomes: crystal caves, Voidlands with floating islands and shulker colonies. It finally makes the End worth exploring after you've killed the dragon.
Quality of life
Vanilla Tweaks (bundle)
1.14 - 1.21+Not a single data pack but a modular system of small improvements. On vanillatweaks.net you pick the tweaks you want and generate a custom pack. Popular modules: players drop their head on death, armor statues (posing armor stands), multiplayer sleep (one player is enough to skip the night) and a coordinates HUD. We cover the best modules in our Vanilla Tweaks guide.
Graves (Gravestones)
1.17 - 1.21+When you die, your items go into a gravestone instead of scattering on the ground. The gravestone resists explosions and doesn't vanish over time. Right-click it and you get everything back. No more panicked runs to your death spot to grab items before they despawn. On multiplayer servers each player can only access their own gravestones.
VeinMiner
1.17 - 1.21+Sneak and mine a block, and the whole ore vein breaks at once. It works on coal, iron, diamonds, lapis, redstone and every other ore. Your tool loses durability for every block mined, so it isn't overpowered. It saves miles of clicking and makes mining a lot more pleasant.
TreeCapitator
1.16 - 1.21+Chop one log at the base of a tree and the whole tree comes down. The leaves decay automatically, dropping saplings and sticks. No more climbing a tree block by block or leaving floating tree crowns in the landscape. It works on all wood types, including Nether wood.
Gameplay and adventure
BlazeandCave Advancements Pack
1.16 - 1.21+Over 900 new advancements grouped into themed tabs: mining, farming, animals, the Nether, the End, building, combat, challenges and many more. It turns the advancement system into a deep progression system that will keep you busy for hundreds of hours.
True Survival - Zombie Apocalypse
1.19 - 1.21+Turns Minecraft into a survival game with a horror twist. Nights are longer, zombies are faster and stronger, food is harder to come by and death is permanent (hardcore-lite). It adds a thirst system, zombie infection, improved weapon crafting and new types of enemies. A complete change to how the game plays.
Dungeons and Taverns
1.20 - 1.21+Adds dozens of new structures to world generation: dungeons, towers, ruins, taverns, bandit camps, crypts and abandoned mines. Every structure has its own loot tables and challenges. It makes exploring worthwhile, because something new may be waiting behind every hill. Compatible with Terralith.
Crafting
Crafting Tweaks
1.14 - 1.21+A Vanilla Tweaks pack that adds missing crafting recipes. Break concrete down into sand and gravel, craft horse armor, recycle iron and diamond tools into ingots, get quartz back out of a block of quartz. Small changes that remove absurd gaps in vanilla crafting.
Extended Crafting
1.19 - 1.21+More than 100 new crafting recipes that expand what vanilla can do. Craft clay from sand and gravel, saplings from leaves, double batches of bread, and get more options for dyeing leather. Every recipe is logical and doesn't wreck the game's balance, it just removes needless limitations.
Enchantments
Enchantment Overhaul
1.21+Rebuilds the enchanting system from the ground up. New enchantments (Lifesteal, Frostbite, Thunderstrike), changed XP costs, no level limit at the anvil and a new system for upgrading enchantments. It uses the new enchantment system in 1.21, so it needs no mods. Works great with our enchantment calculator.
Mobs
Spawn Animations
1.19 - 1.21+Mobs no longer appear out of nowhere. Instead they climb out of the ground, drop from the sky or materialize out of particles. A zombie digs itself out of a grave, an enderman teleports in with a distinctive effect and a creeper crawls out from behind a block. A purely cosmetic data pack, but it drastically improves the atmosphere of the game.
Recommended starter set
If you'd rather skip the full list and take a ready-made setup, install Terralith + Amplified Nether + Nullscape (a complete rework of world generation in all three dimensions), Vanilla Tweaks (with the modules multiplayer sleep, graves, coordinates HUD and crafting tweaks), BlazeandCave Advancements (a progression system) and Spawn Animations (atmosphere).
These data packs are fully compatible with each other and don't conflict with optimization mods such as Sodium or Lithium. You can safely use them together on your SMP server, and players don't have to install anything on their side.
You can download every data pack on this list from Modrinth or Vanilla Tweaks. Step-by-step instructions are in our data pack installation guide. If you'd rather play custom maps, see our map guide.
