Minecraft shader comparison

Shader packs are graphics mods that completely change how Minecraft looks: dynamic shadows, realistic lighting, volumetric fog, water reflections and hundreds of other visual effects. The right one depends on how powerful your PC is, which style you like and whether it plays nicely with your other mods.

Our shader comparison tool

We built an interactive shader comparison tool that lets you filter shader packs by compatibility (Iris/OptiFine), visual style (realistic, fantasy, cinematic, minimal) and performance on three hardware tiers. Pick two shaders and compare them side by side, with FPS benchmarks, feature lists and download links.

Open the shader comparison tool

The tool covers the 15 most popular shader packs, including BSL Shaders, Complementary Reimagined, SEUS Renewed, Sildur's Vibrant Shaders, MakeUp Ultra Fast and more. Every pack is rated for performance on a low-end, mid-range and high-end PC.

What to look for when choosing a shader

Performance: Light shaders like MakeUp Ultra Fast cost only 10-20% of your FPS, while heavy packs with path tracing (SEUS PTGI, Continuum RT) can cut it by 70-80%. Match the shader to what your hardware can handle.

Mod loader: In 2026, Iris Shaders (Fabric/Quilt) offers better performance and mod compatibility than OptiFine. If you play with Fabric mods, Iris is the clear choice. OptiFine still works fine on its own.

Visual style: Some shaders aim for photorealism (Complementary Reimagined, SEUS), others keep Minecraft's cartoon look with better lighting (BSL, Sildur's), and a few go for a specific cinematic or fantasy mood. Pick the style you enjoy looking at.

Special features: Colored block lighting (voxel-based colored lighting), available mainly on Iris, makes lanterns, lava and torches cast colored light on their surroundings. Ray tracing and path tracing give the most realistic results but need a powerful graphics card (RTX 3060 or better).

Popular shaders at a glance

Complementary Reimagined - the best balance of quality and performance. Realistic lighting, beautiful water and great compatibility with Iris and mods. A solid pick for a mid-range PC.

BSL Shaders - a community classic. Warm colors, soft shadows and good performance. Works on both Iris and OptiFine.

SEUS Renewed - one of the oldest and most popular shader packs. Realistic style with volumetric lighting. Needs a mid-to-high-end PC.

MakeUp Ultra Fast - the best shader for low-end computers. Minimal FPS impact while still looking decent.

Sildur's Vibrant Shaders - vivid colors and several performance profiles (Lite, Medium, High, Extreme). A good choice at any hardware level.
