Minecraft boss respawn timer: Ender Dragon, Wither, Raid and Phantom
Boss fights in Minecraft take planning. You need to know when a boss can return, how much time is left before a threat shows up and which phases the respawn goes through. Our timer tracks four of the most important time-based mechanics in the game: Ender Dragon respawns, Wither skull farming, the Hero of the Village effect after a raid and phantom spawns when you go without sleep.
The timer runs in your browser with an optional sound alert, so you hear a signal when the phase changes. Start, pause and reset take one click each. Every boss comes with its phases described with exact timings, plus strategy tips.
- 00:00Dragon defeated - portal active
- 00:05Experience collected
- 00:10Dragon egg appears on the portal
- 00:20You can place the end crystals
- 00:40Crystals placed - the dragon is respawning
- 01:00New Ender Dragon fully respawned
- *You need 4 end crystals to summon the dragon again
- *Each later kill gives less XP (500 instead of 12,000)
- *The dragon egg only appears after the first kill
- *An end gateway portal appears after every kill
Ender Dragon respawn mechanics
The Ender Dragon is Minecraft's main boss, waiting in the End on top of the obsidian pillars. When the dragon dies, the exit portal activates, you receive 12,000 XP (first kill) and the dragon egg appears.
The dragon does not respawn automatically. To summon it again, you need to:
- Collect 4 end crystals
- Return to the End and find the exit portal (bedrock in the center)
- Place one crystal on each of the portal's 4 edges
- Wait for the summoning sequence to finish. The dragon respawns together with the crystals on the pillars
Each later kill gives only 500 XP and does not produce a dragon egg (the egg appears only the first time). In return, every kill creates a new end gateway, which teleports you to the outer End islands.
Wither summoning and skull farming
The Wither is the second boss you have to summon yourself. It has no automatic respawn mechanic. Every time you need 3 wither skeleton skulls, which have a very low drop rate.
How to summon the Wither
- Build a T shape from 4 blocks of soul sand or soul soil (3 across the top, 1 below)
- Place 3 wither skeleton skulls on the three top blocks
- The Wither appears immediately and starts charging (about 10 seconds, during which it is invulnerable)
- When it finishes charging, the Wither explodes and starts attacking
Skull farming
Wither skeleton skulls have only a 2.5% drop chance (5.5% with Looting III). On average that means you have to kill 18-40 wither skeletons for one skull. Our timer helps you track farming time. A typical session for 3 skulls with Looting III takes 8-15 minutes on a well-built farm.
Raids and the Hero of the Village effect
Raids start when a player with the Bad Omen effect enters a village. You get Bad Omen by killing a pillager captain (a pillager carrying a banner). A raid has 3-7 waves (depending on difficulty), and after you win it you receive the Hero of the Village effect.
The Hero of the Village effect
- Duration: 40 minutes of real time (2,400 seconds), counted only while you are playing
- Trade discounts: cheaper trades with villagers (the discount depends on the effect level)
- Gifts: villagers throw items toward you
- Reset: the effect ends on death or when the time runs out
Phantoms and the insomnia mechanic
Phantoms are hostile mobs whose spawning depends directly on what the player does. They show up when you have not slept in a bed for 3 or more in-game days (72,000 ticks, or 60 minutes of real time).
Phantom spawn conditions
- You have not slept for at least 3 in-game days
- It is night or there is a thunderstorm
- You are on the surface (Y above sea level)
- The difficulty is not Peaceful
- You are not in the Nether or the End
- There is open sky above your head (no roof)
How to avoid phantoms
- Sleep regularly: getting into a bed for a moment is enough, you do not have to sleep through the night
- Keep a cat: cats scare phantoms away within 16 blocks
- Build a roof: phantoms do not spawn under a roof
- Play underground: spawning needs open sky above the player
- Game rule: on a server you can turn phantoms off with the Spawn phantoms game rule
Phantoms drop phantom membranes (0-1, up to 4 with Looting III), which you use to repair an elytra at an anvil and to brew potions of Slow Falling.
