Minecraft ore distribution: interactive Y level chart

Mining is the foundation of Minecraft, from your first wooden pickaxe to a netherite pickaxe with Fortune III. But digging blind wastes time. Every ore in Minecraft has a set generation range and an optimal Y level where it shows up most often. Our interactive chart shows the exact distribution of 9 ores across all Y levels, from bedrock at Y -64 to mountain peaks at Y 320.

In version 1.18 (Caves & Cliffs Part II) Mojang completely reworked ore distribution. The old system (a uniform distribution over a set Y range) was replaced with a triangular distribution, where ores have clear generation peaks. That means mining at "the good old Y 12" is no longer optimal for diamonds: the best level now is Y -59. Our visualizer lets you compare distribution between 1.18+, 1.17 and pre-1.17, so you know exactly where to mine in your version of the game.

Minecraft version

Since 1.18 the world runs from Y -64 to Y 320. Ore distribution was completely reworked: diamonds generate most often at Y -59, and gold prefers the lower layers.

How to read the ore distribution chart

The chart shows the relationship between the Y level (vertical axis) and the relative generation frequency (horizontal axis, 0-100%). Each ore has its own curve in a characteristic color. The wider the curve at a given Y, the more often the ore appears there.

Hover over the chart to see the exact values at a given Y level. Dashed lines mark the optimal mining levels, the Y where an ore generates most often. You can toggle individual ores with the buttons above the chart to focus on the resources you care about.

Diamonds: where to mine

Minecraft 1.18+: Diamonds generate from Y -64 to Y 16, with the highest frequency at Y -59 (just above bedrock). The deeper you dig, the more diamonds you find, which is a fundamental change from older versions. At Y -59 the diamond frequency is about 2.5x higher than at Y 0.

Pre-1.18: In older versions diamonds generated uniformly from Y 1 to Y 15, with the optimal level at Y 12. That level balanced diamond frequency against avoiding lava lakes (which appeared at Y 10 and below).

Tip: In 1.18+, exploring large natural caves at Y -40 to -59 is often more efficient than classic strip mining, because caves expose ore veins without you having to dig tunnels. Keep in mind, though, that exposed veins (touching air) generate with a lower frequency. That is intentional, and it encourages you to mine solid rock.

Iron: two generation peaks

In 1.18+ iron has a unique distribution with two peaks: Y 16 (underground) and Y 232 (mountain peaks). The mountain peak is higher: iron in the mountains generates in bigger veins and is not reduced for exposure in caves.

For players early in the game (without a diamond pickaxe), the most efficient approach is to look for iron in the mountains at Y 200-260. Exposed veins in mountain caves and on cliffs let you collect iron without digging. Later in the game, mining at Y 16 gives you iron as a bonus while you search for diamonds and gold.

Gold: concentrated at depth

In 1.18+ gold generates mainly between Y -64 and Y 32, with the highest frequency at Y -16. That is a change from older versions, where the optimum was Y 32. Gold is essential for crafting golden apples, clocks, powered rails and netherite blocks.

Badlands biome: In badlands, gold generates at a higher frequency and over an extended range, from Y -64 all the way up to Y 256. If you want gold on a massive scale, badlands is by far the best choice.

Nether: Nether gold ore generates in the Nether at all Y levels (10-117) and drops gold nuggets. Mining gold in the Nether is efficient, but remember that if you mine gold near piglins without golden armor, you risk an attack.

Redstone: deep and plentiful

Redstone generates from Y -64 to Y 16 with the highest frequency at Y -59, the same as diamonds. That means mining at Y -59 gets you diamonds and redstone at the same time. One block of redstone ore gives 4-5 redstone dust (up to 8 with Fortune III), which makes it the most plentiful resource in the lower layers.

Redstone is key for building machinery, from simple piston doors to complex item sorters and automatic farms. If you plan big redstone projects, it is worth mining at Y -59 and collecting redstone and diamonds together.

Copper: new in 1.17

Copper was added in 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part I) and generates from Y -16 to Y 112 with the highest frequency at Y 48. It generates in bigger veins than other ores (up to 20 blocks per vein), which makes it relatively easy to find.

Copper frequency is increased in the dripstone caves biome. Copper is used to craft spyglasses, lightning rods and copper blocks, which oxidize over time and change color from orange to turquoise. Waxing copper blocks (with honeycomb) stops the oxidation at the stage you choose.

Lapis lazuli: key for enchanting

Lapis lazuli generates from Y -64 to Y 64 in a triangular distribution with a peak at Y -1 (1.18+) or Y 16 (pre-1.18). It is the only resource in the game required for enchanting items at an enchanting table: you need 1-3 lapis lazuli per enchantment.

Lapis lazuli is also useful for dyeing: it gives blue dye for wool, glass, leather armor and fireworks. Mining at Y -1 in 1.18+ gives the best results, but lapis is common enough that you will usually collect plenty while mining diamonds at Y -59.

Coal: the most common ore

Coal is the most common ore in Minecraft. It generates from Y 0 to Y 320 with the highest frequency at Y 96. It generates in large veins (up to 20 blocks) and is especially abundant in the mountains, where exposed veins let you collect it without digging.

Coal is needed mainly at the start of the game, for making torches and smelting ores. Later you replace it with lava-powered furnaces (a bucket of lava smelts 100 items) or automatic bamboo farms.

Emeralds: only in the mountains

Emeralds generate only in mountain biomes (windswept hills, meadow, grove, snowy slopes, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks) as single blocks. They do not form veins. Frequency rises with altitude, peaking at Y 232 in 1.18+.

Although mining emeralds is possible, trading with villagers is a much more efficient source. A villager farm with librarians (you sell them paper and books) or farmers (you sell them melons and pumpkins) gives you dozens of emeralds per hour without any mining.

Ancient debris: the Nether

Ancient debris is the hardest ore in the game to find. It generates only in the Nether from Y 8 to Y 119, with the highest frequency at Y 15. It is resistant to explosions, which allows an efficient mining method using beds or TNT.

Bed method: At Y 15 in the Nether, dig a 1x2 tunnel, place a bed every 6 blocks and right-click it (beds explode in the Nether). The explosion destroys netherrack but not ancient debris. After a series of explosions, walk through the tunnel and collect the exposed blocks.

TNT method: More expensive but faster. Place TNT every 4 blocks in a tunnel at Y 15 and detonate it. TNT is more efficient than beds because the blast does not reach you from a distance, but it takes a lot of gunpowder (a creeper farm).

To craft one netherite ingot you need 4 ancient debris (smelted into netherite scrap) + 4 gold ingots. One netherite upgrade takes 1 netherite ingot + a smithing template + a diamond item.

How ore distribution changed between versions

Ore distribution in Minecraft has gone through three major stages:

Pre-1.17 (the classic system)

The world ran from Y 0 to Y 256. Ores generated in a uniform distribution over set Y ranges. Copper did not exist. The optimal mining level was Y 12 (diamonds) or Y 11 (a compromise with lava). Every Y layer had the same chance of ore within the generation range.

1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part I)

Copper was added (Y 0-96, peak at Y 48). The world limits did not change (Y 0-256). The other ores kept their old distribution. It was a transitional version, with the big changes coming in 1.18.

1.18+ (Caves & Cliffs Part II)

A fundamental change. The world was extended to span Y -64 to Y 320. A triangular distribution was introduced for all ores. Exposed veins (touching air in caves) have a reduced frequency. Large natural caves became an important source of ore. Diamonds moved deeper (Y -59). Iron got two peaks. Emeralds and coal prefer the mountains.

Efficient mining methods

Strip mining (classic tunnel mining)

Dig 1x2 tunnels (1 wide, 2 high) in a straight line. Leave 2 blocks of wall between tunnels, which gives the best ratio of exposed blocks to blocks dug. At Y -59 this method gives the best results for diamonds and redstone.

Branch mining

Dig a main tunnel and branch off to the left and right every 4-6 blocks. This method covers a larger area, but it is less efficient than classic strip mining for targeted mining.

Cave exploration (1.18+)

Since 1.18, natural caves are huge and expose plenty of ore veins. Exploring caves at Y -40 to -59 is often more efficient than digging tunnels, because you can see the ores without digging. The downside is the risk of running into mobs (creepers, skeletons, zombies).

TNT mining

Later in the game (with a creeper farm and sand from a farm) you can mine with TNT. Each TNT destroys a sphere of blocks with a radius of about 4-5, exposing the veins inside it. It is an expensive method, but very fast.

Frequently asked questions

What Y level should I mine diamonds at in Minecraft 1.18+?

In Minecraft 1.18+ the best level for mining diamonds is Y -59 (just above bedrock). Diamond frequency rises the deeper you dig, and it is highest at Y -59. In older versions (pre-1.18) the best level is Y 12, which balances diamond frequency against avoiding lava lakes.

How did ore distribution change in Minecraft 1.18?

In 1.18 (Caves & Cliffs Part II) the world was extended from Y -64 to Y 320, and ore distribution was fundamentally reworked. Ores now generate in a triangular distribution (not a uniform one), which means they have clear peaks and drop-offs. Diamonds and redstone prefer the deep layers (Y -59), iron has two peaks (Y 16 and Y 232), and coal and emeralds generate mainly in the mountains.

At what Y level is there the most iron?

In Minecraft 1.18+ iron has two generation peaks: Y 16 (underground) and Y 232 (mountain peaks). The mountain peak (Y 232) gives more iron, because veins in the mountains are not reduced for air exposure the way cave veins are. In older versions iron generates fairly evenly from Y 0 to Y 64.

Where do I find ancient debris in the Nether?

Ancient debris generates in the Nether most often at Y 15. The generation range is Y 8-119, but the vast majority appears between Y 8 and Y 22. The most efficient mining method is TNT or bed explosions at Y 15: ancient debris is resistant to explosions, so the surrounding netherrack is destroyed and the ore is exposed.

Do emeralds generate only in the mountains?

Yes, emeralds generate only in mountain biomes (windswept hills, meadow, grove, snowy slopes, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks). They generate as single blocks (not veins), and their frequency rises with altitude, peaking at Y 232 in 1.18+. You can also get emeralds by trading with villagers.

What is the best mining method in Minecraft?

Since 1.18 the most effective mining method is strip mining at Y -59 (diamonds, redstone) or Y -16 (gold). Dig 1x2 tunnels with 2 blocks of wall left between them. Alternatively, explore large natural caves: since 1.18, exposed ore veins in caves are more common than they used to be.

Does Fortune increase ore drops?

Fortune increases the number of drops from diamond, emerald, lapis lazuli, redstone, copper and coal ores. Fortune III gives on average 2.2x more drops than without the enchantment. Before 1.17 it had no effect on iron and gold, which dropped ore blocks that needed smelting; since 1.17 iron and gold ore drop raw iron and raw gold, and Fortune applies to those. Silk Touch lets you collect the ore block itself, which is useful for smelting it with bonus XP.

Does ore distribution differ between Java and Bedrock?

No. Since 1.18 ore distribution works the same in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, with the same triangular distribution parameters. The only difference is the seeds, which can produce slightly different maps, but the chance of finding ore at a given Y level is the same.
