What banners are in Minecraft

Banners are decorative blocks introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.8. They are tall, narrow flags that you can place on the ground, hang on a wall or mount on a shield. Every banner has a base color (one of the 16 dye colors) and optional pattern layers, up to 6 in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Banners don't block movement: players and mobs can walk through them. Fire can't destroy them, but you can break them by hand. They have plenty of uses: decorating buildings, marking guild territory, making flags, customizing shields and marking places on a map.

How to make a banner: basic crafting

At a crafting table, place 6 wool of the same color in the top two rows and 1 stick in the bottom middle slot. The wool color sets the banner's base color.

Applying patterns at a loom

The loom is a workstation block that you craft from 2 planks and 2 string. Open it, put the banner in the first slot and a dye in the second. Then choose a pattern from the list. Special patterns (Creeper, skull, flower, Mojang, globe, piglin) also need a banner pattern item in the third slot.

Full list of banner patterns

Stripes and halves

The basic patterns that split a banner into parts: bottom stripe, top stripe, left stripe, right stripe, horizontal center stripe, vertical center stripe, left/right half and top/bottom half. They are ideal for national flags. For example, the flag of Poland is a red banner with a white top half.

Triangles and diagonals

Slanted and triangular patterns: 4 diagonals (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right), top and bottom triangles, and top and bottom teeth. Useful for coats of arms, shields and checkerboards.

Shapes and borders

Straight cross (+), diagonal cross (X), center diamond, frame, thin border, toothed border and bricks. Borders give a banner a heraldic look.

Gradients and effects

Gradients from the top and from the bottom create smooth color transitions. Small stripes add a striped effect. Combining gradients with other patterns gives you effects like a sunset or flames.

Special patterns

These need separate items: Creeper face, skull, flower, Mojang logo, globe and piglin snout. Flow and Guster, added in 1.21, belong to the same group. These patterns make the most recognizable banners.

16 dye colors

Minecraft has 16 dyes for coloring banner layers:

  • White - from bone meal or lily of the valley
  • Orange - from an orange tulip
  • Magenta - from an allium
  • Light blue - from a blue orchid
  • Yellow - from a dandelion
  • Lime - from smelted cactus plus white dye
  • Pink - from a pink tulip or peony
  • Gray - black and white dye combined
  • Light gray - from an oxeye daisy or white tulip
  • Cyan - blue and green dye combined
  • Purple - red and blue dye combined
  • Blue - from lapis lazuli
  • Brown - from cocoa beans
  • Green - from cactus smelted in a furnace
  • Red - from a poppy or red tulip
  • Black - from an ink sac

Banner design tips

Layer order matters

Layers are applied from the bottom up, so the last one ends up on top. In the game you can't change the order once a layer is applied, but our generator lets you rearrange layers freely before you export.

Contrasting colors

Light patterns on dark backgrounds work best: a white cross on red, a yellow diamond on black. Low-contrast combinations (for example yellow on lime) are hard to read from a distance.

Banners on shields

You can put a banner on a shield at a crafting table, which is a great way to personalize your gear for PvP.

How to use the banner generator

  1. Pick a base color - click one of the 16 colors. This is the banner's background color.
  2. Add pattern layers - choose a pattern from the list, pick a pattern color and click "Add layer". Up to 6 layers.
  3. Change the order - use the up/down arrows to move layers. Remove layers you don't need with the X button.
  4. Watch the SVG preview - the banner updates in real time.
  5. Copy the /give command - paste it into the in-game chat (requires operator permissions).
  6. Use the gallery - expand the gallery of preset designs (flags, crests, motifs from the game) as a starting point.

Using the /give command

The generator builds a /give command for Minecraft Java Edition. It requires operator permissions. On a server, type it into chat or run it from a command block.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a banner in Minecraft?

At a crafting table, place 6 wool of the same color in the top two rows (6 slots) and 1 stick in the bottom middle slot. The wool color sets the banner's base color. You can then add patterns at a loom.

How many patterns can you put on a banner?

You can add up to 6 pattern layers to a banner in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Each layer is one pattern in one dye color. The generator enforces this limit and won't let you add more than 6 layers.

How do I use a loom to make banners?

The loom is the block for applying patterns to banners. Put the banner in the first slot and a dye in the second. For special patterns such as Creeper or skull, add the matching banner pattern item in the third slot. Choose a pattern from the list and take the finished banner. The loom replaced the old crafting-table method for applying patterns.

How do I get special banner patterns (Creeper, skull, flower)?

Special banner patterns are items: the Creeper pattern (paper + creeper head), the Skull pattern (paper + wither skeleton skull), the Flower pattern (paper + oxeye daisy), the Mojang/Thing pattern (paper + enchanted golden apple), the Globe pattern (from a cartographer villager) and the Piglin pattern (found in bastion remnants). Version 1.21 also added the Flow and Guster patterns, which come from trial chambers.

Can I get my banner with a command in Minecraft?

The generator builds a /give command for Java Edition from your design. Copy it with the Copy button and paste it into the in-game chat. Running it requires operator permissions.

How do I put a banner on a shield?

Combine the shield and the banner in a crafting table: put the shield in any slot and the banner next to it. The shield takes on the banner's patterns.

What is the difference between the banner generator and the banner designer?

The banner generator uses a lightweight SVG preview, while the banner designer (see the related links below) uses Canvas rendering. Both tools generate the same kind of /give command.
