The Soulbound mod, following its big 2.0 update, now has almost 194,000 downloads on Modrinth and turns Minecraft combat into a turn-based system inspired by Undertale, Deltarune and Earthbound. Instead of swinging a sword, you get dropped into a separate battle screen where you have to dodge bullet-hell-style attack patterns.
UTDR combat comes to Minecraft
Every fight with an enemy switches the game to a separate battle screen built on mechanics from Undertale, Deltarune and Earthbound, hence the abbreviation UTDR used by the mod's author. You control a small soul symbol that has to avoid the enemy's projectiles scattered across the screen. It's classic bullet-hell, just wrapped in Minecraft's blocky look.
The mod also adds a Graze mechanic: getting close to projectiles without touching them rewards you with extra TP, which you can spend on special skills and attacks, much like mana or action points in classic turn-based RPGs.
Dark worlds and sparing enemies
Soulbound also adds so-called dark worlds: alternate, procedurally generated dimensions with their own unique visual themes, which you reach through special portals scattered around the world. The mod uses the additional Fantasy library to generate them.
Echoing the mercy mechanic from Undertale, some fights can be ended without killing the enemy if you meet the right conditions during the battle. That's a rarity in vanilla Minecraft, where a clash with a mob usually ends with the mob dead or the player running away.
Classes, stats and gear
Instead of one universal set of armor and a sword, Soulbound introduces a character class system with stat point allocation and unique gear that supports your chosen combat style. To calculate damage correctly in this system, the mod relies on the additional Caxton library.
Technical requirements and installation
Soulbound runs on the Fabric mod loader for Minecraft Java Edition in versions 1.21.1 and 1.20.1, and requires the Caxton and Fantasy libraries mentioned above. The mod is free, published under the MIT license, and available to download on Modrinth and CurseForge. You need to add it to a legally owned copy of Minecraft Java Edition. It doesn't work on Bedrock Edition, or without the other mods from the mod list for Minecraft. Admins who want to offer this mode to players need to install the mod on the server side too, not just the client, so it's mainly relevant for private SMP servers rather than every server on the Minecraft server list.
Why it's gaining popularity
Soulbound was created about seven months ago by a developer going by the name Pixelcite, but the real jump in popularity came with the release of update 2.0. Kotaku described it as a mod that "turns the game into an Undertale and Deltarune-inspired turn-based RPG", adding that "it's really refreshing to get to play a mod that mashes two games up in a thoughtful way."
The mod's popularity fits into a broader trend of criticism of vanilla Minecraft combat, which part of the community finds repetitive. That's why mods that change the combat system into something more complex keep coming back, whether by adding combos or, as in this case, by swapping it out entirely for a turn-based system.
