NVIDIA has released RTX Remix 1.6, the next major update to its tool for remastering old games with ray tracing tech, and with it comes the first experimental support for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1. The new Fabric-based mod brings full path tracing straight into the blocky world, adding reflections, global illumination and realistic shadows. The release landed on October 23, 2026, and also includes DLSS 5 and up to 6x frame generation on the newest GeForce RTX 50 series cards.
Path tracing in a blocky world
RTX Remix is NVIDIA's platform for injecting modern rendering into the engines of older games, previously best known for projects like Half-Life 2 RTX and Portal with RTX. In version 1.6, the developers label the Minecraft integration a "featured integration", making it the flagship addition of this update. The mod that renders Minecraft Java Edition through RTX Remix uses a new API pipeline and works alongside a dedicated PBR resource pack made together with the studio BlockWorks, which also added a separate demo map.
The result is a different Minecraft from the one you know with vanilla lighting: torchlight actually bounces off blocks, water gets realistic reflections, and shadows follow the geometry of the scene instead of the simplified block light system. For now it's officially a beta, and NVIDIA itself warns about limited compatibility with other mods.
DLSS 5 and six-times frame generation
Minecraft support is just one part of RTX Remix 1.6. The update introduces DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, which analyzes scene geometry, textures and lighting so AI can improve image quality more accurately. The Toolkit also gets new live artistic controls for tweaking effects while you work on mods.
- DLSS 5 with global A/B/C model settings and material control
- 5x and 6x frame generation on GeForce RTX 50 series cards
- Sparse Rendering with reduced lighting sampling
- ComfyUI 2.0, replacing the previous built-in AI tools for textures and models
- Native Windows on ARM support (ARM64 and ARM64EC)
How to install RTX Remix in Minecraft
Installation has a few requirements: Windows 10 or 11, a GeForce RTX 30 series or newer card, GeForce driver version 616.92 or later, and at least 16 GB of RAM, and the game itself has to be Minecraft Java Edition version 1.21.1. The whole process comes down to downloading the archive from the NVIDIAGameWorks repository on GitHub, extracting it and running the install.bat file, which layers the mod onto your existing game installation. If you're downloading Minecraft Java Edition, keep in mind that the mod works independently of the official launcher and is not part of any Mojang update.
Mixed community reactions
Reception of the first version of the mod is, as is often the case with tech showcases, divided. As outputlag.com notes, players who have been using popular Java Edition shader packs say they'll stick with their current setups, and the criticism on Reddit mostly targets the look of the textures in NVIDIA's default resource pack, not the ray tracing tech itself.
NVIDIA doesn't hide that the project is at an early stage. In the mod's notes, the company wrote: "This is a beta. It was created as a technology showcase, but we love Minecraft and want it to succeed as a rendering mod." Since the renderer supports standard LabPBR textures, the modding community can in practice swap the bundled resource pack for their own projects, which will likely change how it looks to people over the coming weeks.
What this means for Polish players
The Polish Minecraft scene has used shaders like SEUS and Complementary on Java Edition for years, so NVIDIA's path tracing lands on fertile ground, especially among people who build in Creative mode and record videos for YouTube. Keep in mind, though, that this is a solution only for Java Edition on Windows, and the hardware bar of a GeForce RTX 30 series or newer card and an up-to-date driver rules out some players on older machines, while Bedrock Edition isn't covered by this integration at all.
If you still want to try it out, check our guides on shaders and optimization before you commit to installing the beta, and check the current list of versions in the version overview to make sure your Java installation matches the required version 1.21.1.
