OptiFine 1.21: download and installation
OptiFine 1.21 is the line of releases of the popular optimization mod for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.x. Its HD U J9 build for 1.21.11 is the newest stable OptiFine release (as of October 2026). Below you'll find how to download OptiFine 1.21 from the official site, optifine.net, how to install it step by step, and how it compares with the alternatives: Sodium, Iris Shaders and Fabric. It also explains why some players now pick Sodium + Iris over OptiFine on 1.21.
Is OptiFine 1.21 available?
Yes, but not for every 1.21.x version. As of October 2026, plain 1.21 (the Tricky Trials update) has only a test build, HD U J1 pre9. Stable releases exist for 1.21.1 (HD U J1), 1.21.3 (HD U J2) and 1.21.11 (HD U J9 from February 5, 2026), while 1.21.10 only has the J7 pre11 preview. sp614x, OptiFine's author, works alone, and every new game version means adapting the renderer, which is why some versions only get a preview.
For Minecraft 26.x, OptiFine so far has only preview builds (HD U K1 pre2 for 26.1.2 and HD U K2 pre1 for 26.2), and there is nothing yet for 26.3. The details are in the main OptiFine guide.
Worth knowing: OptiFine development has slowed noticeably since 1.19. More and more players are moving to the Fabric ecosystem with the Sodium + Iris pair, which on 1.21 gives better performance in most tests and full compatibility with modern mods. OptiFine 1.21 still makes sense if you want simplicity (one .jar file does everything) and shaders in the OptiFine format.
How to download OptiFine 1.21
Download OptiFine 1.21 only from the official site, optifine.net/downloads. Any other domain (a mirror, a mod aggregator, a "faster download") is a potential source of malware. OptiFine is not officially distributed through CurseForge or Modrinth.
- Open optifine.net/downloads in your browser.
- Find the section for your game version, e.g. Minecraft 1.21.11.
- Click the "Download" link next to the stable release (for 1.21.11 that's HD U J9). Builds marked "pre" are test previews.
- The site shows an ad screen in between: wait 5 seconds and click Skip or Download.
- You'll get a file like
OptiFine_1.21.11_HD_U_J9.jar.
The file is around 8-10 MB. If what you downloaded is clearly bigger or has a different name, don't run it. It's most likely a swapped copy.
Installing OptiFine 1.21 step by step
Unlike most mods, OptiFine doesn't need Fabric or Forge. It has its own installer, which creates a new profile in the Minecraft launcher.
Step 1: Install vanilla Minecraft 1.21.x
First open the official Minecraft launcher and run, at least once in vanilla mode, the 1.21.x version you have an OptiFine file for (e.g. 1.21.11). That makes the launcher download the game files OptiFine adds its changes to.
Step 2: Check Java
Minecraft 1.21 requires Java 21. With the official launcher, Java 21 installs automatically. If you run OptiFine from an external console, download 64-bit Java 21 from adoptium.net.
Step 3: Run the OptiFine installer
Double-click OptiFine_1.21.11_HD_U_J9.jar. If your system doesn't recognize the file, run it from a terminal:
java -jar OptiFine_1.21.11_HD_U_J9.jar
In the installer window, click Install. After a few seconds you'll see the message "OptiFine is successfully installed".
Step 4: Pick the profile in the launcher
Open the Minecraft launcher. A new "OptiFine" entry (sometimes "OptiFine 1.21") appears in the profile menu. Select it and click Play. If Options → Video Settings shows the extended options (Shaders, Quality, Details, Performance, Animations), the installation worked.
OptiFine 1.21 with Forge/Fabric mods
With Forge 1.21.x: drop the OptiFine .jar for the same game version into .minecraft/mods/. OptiFine detects Forge automatically. With Fabric: you need the extra OptiFabric wrapper, but its 1.21 support is very limited, so in practice Sodium + Iris is the better choice on Fabric 1.21. Alternatives to OptiFine 1.21
On 1.21 some players use a combination of Fabric mods instead of OptiFine. In most comparisons Sodium gives 2-3x the FPS of OptiFine with the same graphics settings.
- Sodium - an optimization mod that replaces Minecraft's renderer. Open source, with better performance than OptiFine, especially on weaker GPUs.
- Iris Shaders - support for OptiFine-format shaders on Fabric. On 1.21 it works with most popular shaders (BSL, Complementary, Sildur's).
- Fabric - a lightweight mod loader, required for Sodium and Iris. See the Fabric guide.
- Forge / NeoForge - the traditional loader, used by a large share of modpacks. OptiFine 1.21 works with Forge without extra steps.
- Continuity + Zoomify + LambDynamicLights - three mods that, together with Sodium, give you OptiFine's features (connected textures, zoom, dynamic lighting).

Common problems
OptiFine 1.21 crashes on launch
Most often a corrupted shader is the cause. Delete everything in the .minecraft/shaderpacks folder and try again. Also check that the OptiFine version matches the Minecraft version: OptiFine 1.20.1 won't work on MC 1.21.
OptiFine 1.21 doesn't work with mod X
OptiFine modifies the renderer at a low level, which causes conflicts with other graphics mods (Embeddium, Sodium, Rubidium, Create). You can't run OptiFine together with Sodium, so pick one. For big modpacks on 1.21.1, choose Sodium (which has had official NeoForge builds since August 2024) instead of OptiFine, or Embeddium if the modpack already includes it.
Shaders won't turn on
Check the shader's version: not every shader pack has been updated to 1.21. BSL, Complementary Reimagined and Sildur's Vibrant have compatible versions. SEUS PTGI can be problematic. Put the .zip file in .minecraft/shaderpacks without unpacking it.
Low FPS despite OptiFine 1.21
Give the game more RAM in the launcher (JVM argument: -Xmx4G). Set Graphics: Fast, Render Distance: 10, Smart Animations: ON, Fast Render: ON. If that doesn't help, consider Sodium: on 1.21 its performance lead over OptiFine is the biggest it has ever been. See also: how to boost FPS in Minecraft.
