Beehive in Minecraft: how to make one and how to farm bees
A beehive is your own version of the natural bee nest: you place it wherever you want, move bees into it and collect honey and honeycombs for waxing copper. All it takes is 6 planks, 3 honeycombs from the first nest you find and a campfire for safe harvesting. Below I walk you step by step through the recipe, the difference between a hive and a nest, ways to move bees, and a honey farm layout for steady production.
What a beehive is: Beehive vs Bee Nest
The beehive (Beehive) and the bee nest (Bee Nest) are two variants of the same mechanism: a home for three bees. Mechanically they are identical: they hold 3 bees, fill up with pollen after 5 trips, and let you collect 3 honeycombs or a bottle of honey. They differ in where they come from and how they look.
A bee nest generates naturally on trees in certain biomes (meadow, flower forest, plains). It looks like a hollow in a trunk, full of honey. You can't make it on a crafting table in Minecraft: you have to find one.
A beehive is the craftable counterpart. It looks like a wooden box with a slot in the side. It works exactly like a nest, but you get control: you place it wherever you want, in any biome where you'd like to set up an apiary.
Key differences
| Feature | Bee Nest | Beehive |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Natural, on trees | Crafting (6 planks + 3 honeycombs) |
| Tool to break it | Silk Touch tool (otherwise it disappears) | Any tool |
| Occupied when it generates | Yes - it comes with bees inside | No - empty, you move bees in yourself |
| Biome | Meadow, flower forest, plains | Any |
| Appearance | Irregular hollow | Wooden box |
A nest is the only natural way to get your first 3 honeycombs - without them you can't craft a hive. Find a nest, collect the honeycombs, make a hive.
Beehive recipe: 6 planks and 3 honeycombs
The recipe is simple, but you have to find a natural nest first. Without honeycombs from a nest you can't make a hive.
Step 1: Find a natural bee nest
Nests appear on trees in these biomes: meadow, flower forest and plains. Meadows are the fastest source. Look for oak and birch trees with a visible hollow on the trunk.
If there's no meadow nearby, a flower forest works well too. An oak with flowers under the canopy is often a sign of a nest, so check the trunk.
Step 2: Place a campfire under the nest and collect the honeycombs
Key point: NEVER break a nest without Silk Touch and NEVER click with shears without a campfire. Either mistake ends with 3 bees attacking you at once.
Place a campfire (regular or soul campfire) 1-5 blocks below the nest. The smoke has to reach the nest. The bees inside are calmed and you can collect safely.
With shears in your hand, right-click a nest full of honey (level 5, honey visibly dripping down the side). 3 honeycombs drop. The nest stays in place, empty - you don't break it.
Step 3: Lay out the recipe on a crafting table
Open a crafting table and place:
- Top row: 3 planks (any wood)
- Middle row: 3 honeycombs
- Bottom row: 3 planks (any wood, you can mix them)
The result slot shows 1 beehive. You can mix planks: oak + birch + spruce works. The honeycombs have to be regular honeycombs (not waxed copper).
Step 4: Place the hive near flowers
A hive needs flowers nearby, otherwise the bees won't produce honey. Put the hive in a garden with poppies, dandelions, tulips or sunflowers. No flowers = an empty hive, even with bees inside.
How to collect honey and honeycombs without angry bees
A full hive (level 5, honey visibly dripping down the side) gives you one of two products: 3 honeycombs (with shears) or 1 honey bottle (with an empty glass bottle). After you collect, the hive goes back to level 0 and the cycle starts over.
The campfire method (standard)
- Place a campfire 1-5 blocks below the hive. The smoke has to reach the hive.
- Wait until the hive reaches level 5 (honey drips visible on the side).
- Click the hive with shears (3 honeycombs) or an empty bottle (1 honey bottle).
- The bees inside stay put - they don't attack.
The dispenser method (automatic)
A dispenser loaded with shears or glass bottles collects automatically when a redstone signal triggers it. A hopper under the hive catches the honeycombs and honey that drop out.
This setup is the foundation of a honey farm. An observer detects the hive changing to level 5 and activates the dispenser, which uses the tool and collects, and the hopper carries the product to a chest. It runs 24/7 with no player interaction.
Staying safe without a campfire: what to avoid
- DON'T click the hive with shears or a bottle without a campfire. All 3 bees inside fly out and attack. You get stung and poisoned for 10 seconds.
- Use Silk Touch to move a hive. Only with Silk Touch does the hive keep its bees inside after you break it.
How to move bees into your own hive
There are three ways to settle a new hive with bees. Pick one depending on how far from your base you found the nest.
Method 1: Leading with a flower
Bees follow a player who is holding a flower. The detection range is 10 blocks, so keep the bee in range while you walk back to base. In practice it works over a distance of 50 blocks, but every jump or bump in the terrain distracts the bee.
A good method for distances of 20-100 blocks. Farther than that, the bee easily loses you and you have to go back.
Method 2: Silk Touch on the nest (best)
A tool with the Silk Touch enchantment breaks the nest with the bees still inside. You get a "Bee Nest" item in your inventory, with 1-3 bees trapped inside. You place the nest at your base and the bees fly out and stay close to it.
Silk Touch is an enchantment you can get from an enchanting table or from a librarian. Each use costs one durability point of the tool.
This method works for a hive too (if one is already occupied and you want to move it). Silk Touch keeps the bees inside.
Method 3: Lead and boat
You can tie bees to a fence with a lead. The lead holds the bee in place, and a boat lets you carry it over water across long distances. Awkward over long distances - the Silk Touch method is faster.
Breeding bees: reproduction and biome
Bees breed like any other mob: you give two of them a flower, they enter love mode and a baby bee is born. It takes 20 minutes to grow up and then it's a full member of the colony.
Flowers for breeding
Flowers work, including: poppy, dandelion, tulips (red, pink, white, orange), blue orchid, allium, sunflower, peony, rose bush, pink petals and cornflower (more about cornflowers).
Biome and conditions
Bees spawn in: meadow, flower forest, plains and sunflower plains. Outside those biomes bees don't appear on their own - you have to bring them in.
A hive works in any biome as long as there are flowers nearby. At night and during rain the bees return to the hive and don't collect pollen.
The honey production cycle
- A bee leaves the hive (daytime, no rain).
- It flies to the nearest flower, pollinates it and goes back to the hive.
- It returns with pollen and the hive level goes up by 1. A full cycle takes 30-60 seconds.
- After 5 returns the hive reaches level 5 and is ready to harvest.
- The player or a dispenser collects 3 honeycombs or 1 honey bottle. The level goes back to 0.
A hive with 3 bees produces about 3 honeycombs every 2-3 minutes of active time (daytime, flowers available). A farm of 10 hives gives 30 honeycombs per cycle - enough to wax a whole copper base.
What the products are for
- Honeycomb: waxing copper (stops oxidation), crafting candles, crafting hives
- Honey bottle: food (6 hunger points), removes the Poison effect, crafting sugar and honey blocks
- Honey block: doesn't bounce, slows the player down - blocks for parkour and traps
- Honeycomb block: decoration, not used for anything functional
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What's the difference between a beehive and a bee nest?
A nest (Bee Nest) generates naturally on trees in meadow, flower forest and plains biomes. You craft a beehive (Beehive) from 6 planks and 3 honeycombs. Mechanically they are identical - both hold 3 bees and produce honey. To keep a nest when you break it, you need Silk Touch; a hive can be broken with any tool.
How do I collect honey from a hive without angry bees?
Place a campfire 1-5 blocks below the hive - the smoke calms the bees inside. Without a campfire, the bees fly out and attack when you click the hive with shears or a bottle. An alternative: a dispenser with shears collects automatically.
How do I move bees into my own hive?
Two ways. (1) Lead the bees by holding a flower in your hand - they follow you within 10 blocks. (2) Break the nest with a tool that has Silk Touch - the nest drops with the bees trapped inside, and you place it at your base.
Will the bees attack me after I collect honey?
Yes, if there's no campfire under the hive. The bees sting you and you get the Poison effect for 10 seconds. After stinging, a bee dies within 20-60 seconds. A campfire removes the aggression.
How do I breed bees?
Give two bees a flower, one at a time (right-click). They enter love mode and a baby bee is born, which grows up in 20 minutes. The cooldown before the next breeding is 5 minutes.
What destroys a hive?
Fire directly on the hive (not a campfire underneath), lava, lightning and explosions. Use a lightning rod nearby if you get frequent storms.
The beehive is the foundation of every copper economy in Minecraft - honeycombs wax copper and stop oxidation, and the honeycomb block decorates your base.
