How to install Forge in Minecraft
Minecraft Forge is the most widely used mod loader. You install it once, and after that you can add thousands of mods with a single drag and drop. This guide takes you through the whole process from scratch, even if you've never installed a mod before.
What Minecraft Forge is
Minecraft Forge is a free tool that lets you run mods in Minecraft Java Edition. It works as a bridge between Minecraft and mods: you install it once, then you just drop any Forge-compatible mod into a special folder and you're set.
Forge has been around since 2011 and for more than a decade it has been the standard way to mod Minecraft. A huge share of the best-known mods, such as BigReactors, Tinkers' Construct, Applied Energistics, Thaumcraft and IndustrialCraft, were built for Forge. If you want to play with mods, you'll very likely need Forge.
One important point for beginners: Forge is not a mod itself. It's a tool that makes installing mods possible. Without Forge, mods simply won't work, because the game won't load them.
Forge only works with Minecraft Java Edition. If you play Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, consoles, phone), Forge isn't for you. Bedrock has its own add-on system (Add-ons).
Requirements before you install
Before you start, make sure you have everything you need. A missing piece will cause errors.
Minecraft Java Edition
You need an original, purchased copy of Minecraft Java Edition. Forge doesn't work with unofficial versions. If you don't own Minecraft yet, buy it at minecraft.net.
Java
Minecraft Java Edition needs Java to run. From version 1.17 on, the Minecraft Launcher installs Java automatically, so you probably have it already. For older versions (1.16 and below) you may need Java 8.
To check whether Java is installed, open a command prompt (on Windows: press Win+R, type cmd, hit Enter) and type:
java -version If you see a version number, Java is installed. If you get an error saying the command is not recognized, download Java from adoptium.net (free, and the Eclipse Temurin build is the recommended one).
Minecraft version
Every Forge version is tied to a specific Minecraft version. Before installing, decide which version you want mods for. The most common ones are:
- 1.20.1 - currently the biggest selection of mods for Forge
- 1.19.2 - still popular, with plenty of modpacks
- 1.16.5 - a classic version with a huge mod library
- 1.12.2 - old, but some legendary mods only work here
Mods for 1.20.1 do NOT work on 1.19.2, because the versions are incompatible. Always check which version a mod is built for before you install Forge.
Hardware requirements for mods
Vanilla Minecraft runs smoothly on 4 GB of RAM. With mods you need more: the recommended minimum is 8 GB of RAM in your computer, and 16 GB for big modpacks. You allocate memory to Minecraft in the launcher, which we cover below.
How to download the Forge installer
The official Forge site is files.minecraftforge.net. It's the only place you should download Forge from. Other sites may offer modified or infected files.
Watch out for ads! files.minecraftforge.net makes money from ads. The download page shows a "Skip" button that you have to click after a 5-second countdown to get to the real download button. Don't click any other "Download" buttons, because they may be ads leading to unrelated sites.
Download steps:
- Go to files.minecraftforge.net
- From the list on the left, pick a Minecraft version (for example 1.20.1)
- You'll see a list of Forge releases. Click "Recommended", the stable, tested version. "Latest" is the newest, but it may be unstable
- Click the "Installer" button next to the release you picked
- A countdown appears on the page. Wait 5 seconds and click "Skip" in the top right corner
- A file named something like
forge-1.20.1-47.3.0-installer.jardownloads
A .jar file is a Java file, the equivalent of an .exe on Windows. You can run it with a double-click as long as Java is installed.
Step-by-step installation
You have the installer file. Now we'll go through every step of the installation.
Step 1: Run the installer
Double-click the forge-...-installer.jar file you downloaded. The Forge installer window opens.
If nothing happens after the double-click, Java isn't set up properly. Right-click the file, choose "Open with" and pick "Java(TM) Platform SE Binary" or "OpenJDK".
Step 2: The installer window: choosing an option
The installer window shows three options:
- Install client - installs Forge on your computer (this is the option for players)
- Install server - installs Forge for a Minecraft server
- Extract - extracts the files without installing
Make sure "Install client" is selected. Below it you'll see the path to the .minecraft folder. The default is correct, so don't change it unless you have a custom Minecraft installation.
Step 3: Click OK and wait
Click OK. The installer connects to the internet and downloads the library files it needs. This can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on your connection speed.
Don't close the window or interrupt the process while it installs. A progress bar shows which files are being downloaded.
Step 4: The success message
When the install succeeds, a small window appears saying "Successfully installed client profile Forge" (or something similar). Click OK and the installer closes.
Forge is now installed. You can delete the installer file, you don't need it anymore.
Launching the Forge profile in the launcher
The installation added a new profile to the Minecraft Launcher. Now you need to select it and start the game.
How to select the Forge profile
- Open the Minecraft Launcher
- At the bottom of the screen, next to the "Play" button, you'll see the name of the current profile (for example "Latest release")
- Click the arrow or the profile name and a list of all profiles appears
- Choose the profile named "forge" (sometimes shown as "Forge 1.20.1" or similar)
- Click "Play"
The first Forge launch takes longer than vanilla, because the loader has to index all the mods and resources. That's normal, so don't interrupt it.
Allocate more RAM
By default Minecraft gets only 2 GB of RAM, which is too little for mods. To increase it:
- In the launcher, click the "Installations" tab
- Find the Forge profile and click "..." next to it, then "Edit"
- Click "More options"
- In the "JVM Arguments" field, find
-Xmx2Gand change it to-Xmx4G(4 GB) or-Xmx6G(6 GB) - Click "Save"
Don't allocate more than half of your computer's physical RAM, because the operating system needs memory too.
The Forge main menu
When the game loads, you'll see the Minecraft main menu with a small line of text in the corner of the screen, for example "Forge 47.3.0". That confirms Forge is working. If it isn't there, Forge isn't active: go back to the launcher and check the profile.
Installing mods: the mods folder
Forge uses a special mods folder in the Minecraft directory. Every mod is a separate .jar file. You drop it into that folder and Forge loads it automatically when the game starts.
Where the mods folder is
The default location of the .minecraft folder (and the mods folder inside it):
- Windows:
%appdata%\.minecraft\mods- type this path into the File Explorer address bar - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
If the mods folder doesn't exist, create it by hand, or run Forge once and the launcher will create it for you.
How to install a mod
- Download the mod from a trusted source (for example CurseForge or Modrinth). Make sure the mod version matches your Forge version
- Copy the mod's
.jarfile into the.minecraft/modsfolder - Start Minecraft with the Forge profile
- The mod loads automatically
Check version compatibility! A mod for Forge 1.20.1 won't work with Forge 1.19.2. Always download mods that match the Forge version you installed. You'll find the version on the mod's page (for example in the "Files" tab on CurseForge).
Checking which mods loaded
In the Minecraft main menu (once Forge has loaded), click the "Mods" button. You'll see a list of all active mods. If your mod is on the list, it's working.
Several Forge profiles at once
You can have multiple Forge versions installed at the same time. If you want to play with 1.20.1 mods and 1.16.5 mods (separately), create separate profiles in the launcher and separate mods folders. You can do this in the "Installations" tab of the launcher, where each installation can point to a different game directory.
Common problems and fixes
Installing Forge rarely causes serious trouble, but a few typical errors do come up. Here's how to fix them.
"Java not found" or the installer doesn't respond
The Forge installer needs Java. If the .jar file doesn't open when you double-click it:
- Download and install Java from adoptium.net
- After installing Java, run the Forge installer again
- On Windows you can also right-click the file, choose "Open with" and pick Java
The game crashes when you launch Forge
A crash on startup is the most common problem. The causes:
- An incompatible mod - remove all mods from the
modsfolder and check whether Forge starts without them. Add mods back one at a time to find the one that causes the crash - Too little RAM - raise the memory allocated to Minecraft to at least 4 GB (instructions above)
- The wrong Java version - Forge 1.17+ requires Java 17. Forge 1.16.x and older work with Java 8. Check which Java version the launcher is using
- Corrupted Forge files - delete the
.minecraft/librariesfolder and run the Forge installer again
You can find a detailed error report in the .minecraft/logs/latest.log file. Open it in a text editor and look for lines that start with "ERROR" or "FATAL".
"Version mismatch"
This error means a mod needs a different Forge or Minecraft version. The fix: download the mod version that matches your Forge version, or install the Forge version the mod requires.
The Forge profile doesn't show up in the launcher
If you don't see the Forge profile after installing:
- Restart the Minecraft Launcher
- In the launcher, turn on showing all profiles (the "Installations" tab, check "Modded")
- If it's still missing, run the installer again and make sure the path to .minecraft is correct
The installer never finishes downloading files
The Forge installer downloads libraries from Mojang and Forge servers. If the process stalls:
- Check your internet connection
- Temporarily turn off your firewall or antivirus (they may block connections)
- Try running the installer as administrator (right-click, then "Run as administrator")
Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge: which to choose
Forge isn't the only mod loader for Minecraft. In 2026 there are three main options, each with its own strengths.
Minecraft Forge
Forge is the oldest platform and still the most popular. Its main advantage is a huge mod library built up since 2011. If you're looking for a specific mod (such as Tinkers' Construct, Thermal Expansion or BuildCraft), you'll very likely find it on Forge. Forge is also the default choice for modpacks.
Choose Forge when: you want to play big modpacks, you're after specific older mods, or you're setting up a server with extensive tech and magic mods.
Fabric
Fabric is a newer, lighter mod loader that has become hugely popular since version 1.16. Fabric is faster than Forge and does a better job with game performance.
Choose Fabric when: you want to improve game performance, you play newer versions (1.18+), or you're interested in modern mods focused on gameplay, exploration and content.
NeoForge
NeoForge is a fork of Forge created in 2023, when some Forge developers decided to build a new, modernized platform. It has more active development. It's becoming more and more popular as the successor to Forge on newer versions.
Choose NeoForge when: you play version 1.20.2 or newer and want better support for the latest mods, or a mod you're interested in has moved from Forge to NeoForge.
Quick comparison
- Forge - biggest library, modpacks, versions 1.7-1.21
- Fabric - fast, efficient, modern mods, versions 1.14+
- NeoForge - successor to Forge, active development, versions 1.20.2+
Keep in mind that you can have all three installed as separate profiles, since they don't exclude each other. You switch between them in the launcher.
