X-Ray Ultimate

X-Ray Ultimate is a texture pack that turns stone, dirt, sand and other opaque blocks transparent, revealing ores, caves, spawners and other structures hidden below the surface. It is one of the most searched-for Minecraft packs, and one of the most controversial.

Type Resource pack (texture pack)
Resolution 16x16 (modified UVs)
Performance impact Improves FPS (fewer surfaces rendered)
Compatibility Java Edition
Requires mods No (a plain resource pack)
Allowed on servers No (banned on nearly all servers)

How X-Ray Ultimate works

X-Ray Ultimate doesn't modify the game's code. It is not a mod and needs no Fabric, Forge or OptiFine. It is an ordinary texture pack (resource pack) that replaces the textures of opaque blocks (stone, diorite, andesite, granite, dirt, gravel, sand, sandstone, netherrack and many more) with fully transparent ones (alpha channel set to 0%).

The effect is simple: when you turn on X-Ray Ultimate, most of the terrain disappears, revealing everything that is normally hidden. Diamond, emerald, gold and iron ores hang in the air like colored markers. Caves and ravines show up as voids in a mass of transparent stone. Spawners, dungeons, fortresses and other structures stand out from the background.

Technically, X-Ray Ultimate exploits the fact that Minecraft doesn't check resource pack textures for transparency. The game just lays the provided texture over the block model. If the texture is transparent, the block becomes transparent, with no code changes and no tampering with the game files.

Ethics: is X-Ray cheating?

The answer depends on the context. X-Ray Ultimate is a tool, not cheating in itself, just as a kitchen knife is not a weapon until someone uses it as one.

Single player: When you use X-Ray in single player, you hurt nobody but yourself. You skip the exploration mechanic that is the foundation of survival, but it is your game and your choice. Many players use X-Ray after a death to recover items from behind lava, or for learning purposes (how the world generates, where structures sit). In that context X-Ray is a legitimate tool.

Multiplayer: On multiplayer servers X-Ray gives an unfair advantage. You see diamonds that other players have to search for for hours. You find a base hidden underground in a few seconds. You locate spawners and dungeons without any effort. This is cheating and a violation of the rules of nearly every server. The consequences are usually a permanent ban.

It is worth stressing that even if a server doesn't detect X-Ray automatically, admins can review mining logs. A player who digs straight to diamonds without exploring the tunnels around leaves an obvious trail.

How servers detect X-Ray

Modern Minecraft servers have built-in anti-X-Ray mechanisms that make this pack useless. Here is how the three main methods work:

1. Ore obfuscation (Paper/Spigot engine mode 1): The server swaps the data about hidden ores for stone data before sending it to the client. Your game never learns that there is a diamond under the stone until you get within a few blocks. X-Ray only sees stone, because stone is what's in the network packets.

2. Fake ores (Paper engine mode 2): The server generates random fake ores in the data it sends to the client. With X-Ray you see lots of diamonds, emeralds and gold in every direction, and most of them are fakes that vanish as you walk up to them. This method is especially effective because it doesn't just block X-Ray, it actively misleads the cheater.

3. Mining pattern analysis: Server-side tools track how a player digs. If someone consistently digs straight to ores without exploring side tunnels, the system flags the account for review by the admins. Even without automatic obfuscation, this method catches X-Ray retroactively.

Installation (single player only)

If you want to use X-Ray Ultimate in single player (for example to learn how the world generates, to recover items after dying in lava, or to explore structures), the installation is the same as for any texture pack:

  1. Download X-Ray Ultimate (a .zip file) from a trusted source. Beware of fake sites that pose as X-Ray and distribute malware.
  2. Copy the .zip file into the .minecraft/resourcepacks/ folder.
  3. In the game, open Options, then Resource Packs, and enable X-Ray Ultimate.
  4. Optional: press F3 + T to reload the packs without restarting the game.

Security warning: Many sites offering X-Ray ask you to turn off your ad blocker, click through chains of ads or download an .exe file instead of a .zip. Those are red flags. A real resource pack is always a .zip file containing an assets/minecraft/textures/ folder and a pack.mcmeta file. If the downloaded file has any extension other than .zip, don't open it.

An allowed alternative: Visible Ores

If you want to find ores more easily without breaking server rules, there is an allowed alternative: Visible Ores. This texture pack adds glowing outlines to ore blocks that are normally visible in the game, for example exposed in caves, on ravine walls or while you mine.

The key difference: Visible Ores doesn't show ores hidden behind stone. It only highlights the ores you would see anyway, but makes them easier to spot in dark caves and cluttered spaces. It is a visual advantage, not an informational one. That is why it is accepted on the vast majority of servers.

X-Ray as a mod vs a resource pack

X-Ray Ultimate exists as a resource pack (texture pack), but there are also X-Ray mods (for example Advanced XRay and XRay Mod). The differences matter:

  • Resource pack (X-Ray Ultimate): Replaces textures with transparent ones. Easy to install and needs no mods. Blocked by ore obfuscation on Paper/Spigot, because it relies on the data the server sends.
  • X-Ray mod: Modifies the rendering engine to hide selected blocks. More advanced, often with a GUI for choosing which blocks stay visible.

Whatever the form, both types of X-Ray are banned on servers and put you at risk of a ban. Ore obfuscation on Paper engine mode 2 effectively neutralizes both texture packs and mods.

Performance impact

Paradoxically, X-Ray Ultimate can improve your FPS. When stone blocks become transparent, Minecraft's rendering engine skips their surfaces, so there are fewer polygons to draw. On weak hardware the difference can be 10-20 FPS more, especially underground, where thousands of stone surfaces are normally rendered.

At the same time, X-Ray strains the GPU in a different way: transparent textures require depth sorting, which on older cards can cause minor visual artifacts. In practice the net effect on performance is usually positive.

Frequently asked questions

Is X-Ray Ultimate cheating?

On multiplayer servers, yes. The rules of nearly every server ban X-Ray in any form. In single player it is a matter of personal preference: there is no "victim" of the cheating other than the player.

Can I get banned for using X-Ray?

Yes. On most servers the ban for X-Ray is permanent, with no chance to appeal. Servers with ore obfuscation (Paper/Spigot) effectively block X-Ray, and admins can review mining logs and spot suspicious patterns even after the fact.

Does X-Ray work on Bedrock Edition?

Bedrock Edition has a different resource pack system and different texture limitations. Classic X-Ray through transparent textures doesn't work the same way there, and X-Ray Ultimate is not made for Bedrock.

What is an allowed alternative to X-Ray?

Visible Ores adds glowing outlines to ores that are normally visible in the game, without showing hidden blocks. It is accepted on most servers.

Does X-Ray Ultimate contain viruses?

The real X-Ray Ultimate is an ordinary texture pack (a .zip file with an assets/minecraft/textures/ folder). It can't contain executable code. The problem is that many fake sites pose as the official source and distribute malware under the X-Ray name. Download only .zip files and check their contents before installing.
