What CrazyCrates is

CrazyCrates is a plugin that adds a crate system with prizes. The player walks up to a crate (a block in the game world), uses a key, and an animation plays to draw the prize. The prize can be an item, money, a rank, a command or an effect.

The plugin is developed by Crazy Crew (the authors of CrazyEnchantments, CrazyAuctions and CrazyVouchers). It's free and open source. It's available on Modrinth and GitHub.

CrazyCrates requires Paper 1.20.5+ (newer versions don't support Spigot). Older versions of the plugin support Spigot and older Minecraft versions.

Animation types

CrazyCrates offers 11 built-in animation types for opening a crate:

Type Description
CSGO A CS:GO-style animation - items scroll along a strip
Roulette A roulette wheel with spinning prizes
CrateOnTheGo Instant opening with no animation
QuickCrate Quick opening with a short effect
War The crate explodes into a cloud of prizes, and the player picks one
Wheel A wheel of fortune with colored panels
Wonder A particle effect + a draw with flashing
Casino A slot machine style - three columns
Cosmic A cosmic theme with stars and particles
FireCracker A fireworks explosion
QuadCrate Four crates appear around the player

Every crate type on the server can have a different animation. For example, a "Common" crate with the QuickCrate animation, a "Rare" one with Roulette, and a "Legendary" one with Cosmic. Animations add excitement and impress players.

Prize configuration

You define prizes in the crate files in plugins/CrazyCrates/crates/:

# plugins/CrazyCrates/crates/legendary.yml
crate-type: CSGO
name: "&6Legendary Crate"

prizes:
  netherite-sword:
    display-name: "&cNetherite Sword"
    material: NETHERITE_SWORD
    enchantments:
      - "SHARPNESS:5"
      - "UNBREAKING:3"
      - "FIRE_ASPECT:2"
    chance: 5
    max-range: 100
  money-1000:
    display-name: "&a1000$"
    material: GOLD_INGOT
    chance: 20
    max-range: 100
    commands:
      - "eco give %player% 1000"
  vip-rank:
    display-name: "&6VIP Rank (7 days)"
    material: NETHER_STAR
    chance: 3
    max-range: 100
    commands:
      - "lp user %player% parent addtemp vip 7d"

The chance parameter relative to max-range sets the drop chance. A prize with chance 5 and max-range 100 has a 5% chance. The chances don't have to add up to 100 - the plugin normalizes them automatically.

Prizes can include: items with enchantments and lore, money (through the eco command), ranks (through LuckPerms), console commands, particle effects and sounds.

Key system

CrazyCrates supports two types of keys:

  • Physical keys - an item in the player's inventory. The player holds the key and right-clicks the crate. Keys can be traded, stored in chests and lost on death.
  • Virtual keys - a counter in the database. They take up no inventory space and aren't lost on death. The player checks the amount with the /keys command.

An admin gives keys to players with these commands:

/crates give physical [player] [crate] [amount]
/crates give virtual [player] [crate] [amount]

Keys can also be awarded automatically: for voting (Votifier integration), for a purchase in the shop (ShopGUI+), for tokens (TokenManager) or as an event reward.

Commands and permissions

Command Description Permission
/keys Shows how many virtual keys you have crazycrates.keys
/crates A GUI previewing all crates crazycrates.gui
/crates give [type] [player] [crate] [amount] Gives a key to a player crazycrates.admin
/crates set [crate] Sets the location of a crate crazycrates.admin
/crates reload Reloads the configuration crazycrates.admin
/crates forceopen [crate] [player] Forces a crate to open crazycrates.admin

Tips for admins

  • Balance the odds - the best prize should have a 1-3% chance. If every player gets legendary items every third opening, crates lose their value.
  • Physical keys on economy servers - players can trade them, which adds value. On PvP servers virtual keys are safer.
  • Prize preview - always enable the /crates GUI so players can see what they can win. Transparency builds trust.
  • Crates as the main way to monetize - on servers with a VIP shop (e.g. through Tebex), crate keys are a popular way to support the server. Make sure the prizes don't break the Mojang EULA rules.
  • Tie it to voting - a key for a vote for the server is the simplest and most effective way to reward community activity.
