BedWars in Minecraft: the complete guide

BedWars is one of the most popular PvP minigames in Minecraft. Protect your bed, destroy your opponents' beds and eliminate rival teams in intense battles on floating islands. Here's everything you need to know to win.

What is BedWars?

BedWars is a team PvP minigame in which every team has an island with a bed and a resource generator. The main goal is simple: destroy every opponent's bed and eliminate their players while protecting your own bed. As long as your bed exists, you respawn after every death. Once it's destroyed, the next death means permanent elimination from the game.

BedWars appeared around 2014-2015 and quickly became one of the most popular modes on Minecraft servers. Its simple rules combined with strategic depth make it accessible to beginners and still demanding enough for professional players. On Hypixel alone, more than 100,000 unique players play BedWars every day.

A typical match lasts 10 to 30 minutes and has distinct phases: the early game (collecting resources, building defenses), the mid game (attacking neighboring islands) and the late game (fights for survival once most beds are destroyed). BedWars mechanics combine PvP, resource management, building and teamwork.

Game rules

The standard BedWars rules (using Hypixel as the example) look like this:

Game modes

  • Solo (1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1): 8 one-player teams. Everyone plays alone. The best mode for learning, since you don't have to coordinate with anyone.
  • Doubles (2v2v2v2): 4 or 8 teams of 2. A popular mode with a perfect balance between team strategy and individual skill.
  • 3v3v3v3: 4 teams of 3. Requires good communication and a split of roles (defender, rusher, resource collector).
  • 4v4v4v4: 4 teams of 4. The most chaotic and longest mode, ideal for playing with friends.

How a match plays out

  1. Start: each team spawns on its own island with an iron and gold generator. The island has a bed in the team's color.
  2. Early game (0-5 min): you collect resources, buy basic gear in the shop, build bed defenses and get ready to attack.
  3. Mid game (5-15 min): you build bridges to neighboring islands and to the diamond/emerald islands, attack your opponents' beds and defend your own.
  4. Late game (15+ min): most beds are destroyed and players fight for survival with better gear. Generators produce more resources.
  5. Sudden Death: after a set time (usually 30-60 min) the game goes into sudden death. All beds are destroyed automatically and the Ender Dragon starts attacking the islands.

Win condition

The last team with living players wins. That means you have to destroy every opponent's bed and then eliminate them. Winning takes both PvP skill and strategic thinking about the order in which you attack teams.

Resource system

BedWars has four main resources, each with a different value and source:

Iron

The most common resource. It spawns on your island every second. Used to buy building blocks, swords and basic armor.

Gold

Spawns on your island every few seconds. Used to buy team upgrades, better tools and special items.

Diamonds

They spawn on the islands in between (between the bases). Used for team upgrades: better armor, faster generators, traps.

Emeralds

The rarest resource, it spawns on the central island. Emeralds buy the most powerful items: diamond armor and obsidian.

Managing resources efficiently is the key to success. Don't spend all your gold on one item: keep a reserve for emergencies. Control the diamond and emerald islands, but don't leave your base unprotected.

Defending your bed

Bed defense is the foundation of BedWars. Even the best PvP player will lose if they don't protect their respawn point. Here are defense strategies from basic to advanced:

Level 1: Basic defense (first 2 minutes)

  • Surround the bed with wool (the cheapest block) within a radius of 2-3 blocks.
  • Buy wood and add a second layer around the wool.
  • Make sure the bed is covered on all sides, including above and below.

Level 2: Solid defense (5-10 minutes)

  • Add a layer of end stone (resistant to TNT explosions) around the wood defense.
  • Buy obsidian with emeralds and place it directly on the bed as the last line of defense.
  • Set up traps (bought with diamonds): alarm, slowness, blindness or mining fatigue.
  • Add a layer of glass: glass can't be destroyed by fireballs and is hard to break quickly.

Level 3: Advanced fortification

  • Use water buckets around the bed: water slows attackers and stops TNT damage.
  • Build a defensive platform around the bed with multiple layers and a maze that slows enemies down.
  • Leave a defender at the bed who rebuilds destroyed blocks and fights off attackers.
  • Buy a Bed Bug (Silverfish Egg) or a Dream Defender (Iron Golem) as extra protection.

Remember: the best defense is one the attacker has to break through for at least 30-60 seconds. That gives you enough time to get back from your attack and defend the bed.

Attack strategies

Attacking in BedWars is more than building a bridge and fighting with a sword. Here are proven strategies:

Rush (fast attack)

The simplest and most common strategy. At the start of the game, buy blocks and a sword, build a bridge to the nearest island and attack the enemy's bed before they can build a solid defense. Effective in Solo and Doubles, less so in 4v4.

Attacking from the side or from below

Instead of building a bridge straight to the enemy base (which is obvious), approach from a side the opponent isn't expecting. Digging up through the platform under the bed is often faster than breaking through the main defense.

TNT attack

TNT destroys most blocks (except obsidian) in a large radius. Buy TNT with gold, go to the enemy base and detonate it next to the bed. The combination of TNT and a fireball is devastating.

Fireball attack

Fireballs destroy blocks from a distance. You can tear down a bed's defense from a safe distance, then go in and finish the job. Effective against wool and wood defenses, ineffective against end stone and obsidian.

The "Void" tactic

Instead of destroying the bed, knock your opponents off the island into the void. In the late game, when beds are already destroyed, knockback from a sword or bow can eliminate players instantly. Use a Knockback Stick (a stick with the Knockback enchantment) to knock players off effectively.

Shop and items

In BedWars you buy all your gear from an NPC on your island. Here are the most important items in each category:

Blocks

  • Wool (16 pcs): the cheapest, ideal for building bridges and basic defense.
  • Wood (16 pcs): sturdier than wool, a good defense layer.
  • End stone (12 pcs): blast-resistant, key for defending your bed.
  • Obsidian (4 pcs): bought with emeralds, the toughest defense (needs a diamond pickaxe).

Weapons and tools

  • Stone sword (for iron): the basic weapon, enough to start with.
  • Iron sword (for gold): a big jump in damage, a worthwhile purchase.
  • Diamond sword (for emeralds): the best weapon in the game.
  • Pickaxe / Axe: essential for breaking bed defenses. Upgrade through successive purchases.
  • Shears (for iron): break wool instantly, essential when attacking beds defended with wool.

Special items

  • TNT: destroys blocks in a radius (except obsidian). Key for breaking through fortifications.
  • Fireball: destroys blocks from a distance and knocks players off bridges.
  • Bridge Egg: throw it and it automatically builds a bridge in the direction of the throw. Ideal for fast rushes.
  • Pearl (Ender Pearl): teleports you over a distance. Jump past an enemy's defense or escape a tight spot.
  • Bed Bug: summons a Silverfish that attacks enemies. Distracts the defender.
  • Dream Defender: summons an Iron Golem that defends the area. Powerful defense.
  • Magic Milk: immunity to traps for 30 seconds. Essential when attacking well-defended bases.

Beginner's guide

If you're just starting out in BedWars, here's what to do in your first game, step by step:

  1. Collect resources: stand next to the generator and collect iron and gold for the first 30-60 seconds.
  2. Buy basic gear: a stone sword plus blocks (wool or wood, 2-3 packs).
  3. Build your bed defense: surround the bed with wool on all sides. That should take less than a minute.
  4. Expand the defense: add wood or end stone as a second layer.
  5. Build a bridge: head to the nearest island with diamonds, or to the neighboring team.
  6. Don't panic in a fight: left-click, move sideways (strafe), jump and try not to fall off the island.
  7. Go back for resources: return to your island regularly for new batches of iron and gold.

The most common beginner mistakes:

  • No bed defense: even one "naked" bed is asking for a quick elimination.
  • Spending all your resources at once: keep a reserve for blocks to get back to your island after dying.
  • Ignoring diamonds and emeralds: the islands in between give a huge advantage.
  • No teamwork: in team modes, communication on Discord or in chat is key.
  • Building narrow bridges: a 1-block bridge is easy to knock off. Build 2-block-wide bridges or add railings.

Advanced techniques

These techniques separate good players from great ones:

Speed bridging

Normal bridging (walking backwards, sneaking, placing a block) is slow. Speed bridging means placing blocks quickly while moving forward, without sneaking. It takes precise timing, so practice on training servers (for example Hypixel Housing). Variants: Ninja Bridge, God Bridge, Breezily Bridge.

Jitter clicking and butterfly clicking

A higher CPS (clicks per second) gives you an edge in 1.8 PvP combat. Jitter clicking means tensing your arm muscles to reach 12-16 CPS. Butterfly clicking is rapidly alternating two fingers on the mouse button (15-25 CPS). Both take practice and a suitable mouse.

Clutching (saving yourself mid-air)

If someone knocks you off a bridge, you can save yourself by placing a block under you in mid-air. It takes an instant switch to blocks and a click at just the right moment. Advanced players can "clutch" even several blocks below the edge.

Fireball jumping

A fireball knocks back the player who threw it. You can use that for a long jump: throw a fireball at your feet and fly over the void to the enemy island. It's faster than building a bridge, but it takes precision.

Bed trapping

An advanced defensive tactic. Build a maze of slowing blocks (cobwebs, water) around the bed and place TNT connected to buttons. When an enemy walks into the trap, detonate the TNT and eliminate them in a confined space.

Resource splitting

In team modes, split up the roles: one player defends the base and collects resources, a second attacks and a third controls the diamond islands. Swapping roles every few minutes keeps the team sharp.

Best servers for BedWars

These are the servers with the best BedWars experience in 2026:

  • Hypixel (mc.hypixel.net): the clear number one. More than 100,000 players a day in BedWars alone. Solo, Doubles, 3s, 4s, Dream Mode (special modifiers) and ranked BedWars. Java Edition only.
  • Cubecraft (play.cubecraft.net): EggWars (a similar mode with eggs instead of beds). Available on Java and Bedrock Edition. A good alternative with European servers (lower ping for players in Europe).
  • The Hive (geo.hivebedrock.network): Treasure Wars (the BedWars version for Bedrock). The biggest Bedrock Edition server, with a dedicated mode similar to BedWars.
  • Mineplex (mineplex.com): Cake Wars (a version with cakes instead of beds). Java and Bedrock. Less popular than Hypixel, but a solid alternative.
  • More servers: check our server list to find other servers with BedWars.

Frequently asked questions

What is BedWars in Minecraft?

BedWars is a team PvP minigame where the goal is to destroy your opponents' beds and eliminate their players. As long as your bed exists, you can respawn after dying. Once your bed is destroyed, the next death means permanent elimination.

Which server is best for BedWars?

The most popular BedWars server is Hypixel (mc.hypixel.net), which offers Solo, Doubles, 3v3v3v3 and 4v4v4v4 modes. For Bedrock Edition players, Cubecraft and The Hive offer a similar mode.

How do I gather resources quickly in BedWars?

The generators on your island produce iron and gold automatically. To collect faster, stand close to the generator and upgrade it with diamonds. Diamonds and emeralds spawn on the islands in between, so control them to gain an economic advantage.

How do I defend my bed in BedWars?

The basic defense is wool around the bed, followed by a layer of wood or end stone. Advanced defense includes layers of obsidian (bought with emeralds), traps and water buckets to slow down attackers.

How do I increase my CPS (clicks per second)?

CPS matters in BedWars because most servers use 1.8 PvP mechanics. Practice on CPS-testing sites or on training servers. A good gaming mouse (for example one with Omron switches) makes fast clicking easier. Aim for 10-15 CPS. More isn't necessary.

Is BedWars available on Bedrock Edition?

The main BedWars experience is on Java Edition (Hypixel). On Bedrock Edition you can find similar modes: Treasure Wars (The Hive), EggWars (Cubecraft) and Bed Wars (some smaller servers). The mechanics are similar, but the details differ. Check our Bedrock Edition guide.

Summary

BedWars is a minigame that combines PvP, strategy, building and teamwork in one intense package. The key to success is a solid bed defense, efficient resource management and constantly improving your PvP skills. Start with Solo mode on Hypixel, learn the basics and gradually move on to team games.
