Diamonds in Minecraft: the complete guide
Diamond is one of the most valuable resources in Minecraft. Diamond tools and armor are the second-highest tier in the game (before netherite), and the diamond itself is needed to build an enchanting table and a jukebox. Since version 1.18 the ore distribution has changed drastically: diamonds now generate most often at Y=-59, not Y=12 as before. This guide has exact data on where to dig, how to dig and what to do with your diamonds.
What Y level are diamonds at?
Since update 1.18 (Caves & Cliffs Part 2), diamond ore generates between Y=-64 and Y=16. The highest concentration is at Y=-59, which is the optimal level to mine.
To check your current Y level, press F3 (Java Edition) or turn on coordinates in the settings (Bedrock Edition). Look at the Y value: that is your vertical position.
Before 1.18, diamonds peaked at Y=12. If you mine in an old world updated to 1.18+, the new distribution applies only to newly generated chunks below Y=0.
Diamond ore distribution
Diamond ore has a triangular distribution: the chance of finding it rises linearly the deeper you dig, peaks at Y=-59 and then drops sharply at Y=-64 (bedrock).
Key levels:
| Y level | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Y=16 | Minimal | Upper generation limit |
| Y=0 | Low | Transition to the deepslate layer |
| Y=-20 | Medium | Growing concentration |
| Y=-40 | High | A good level to mine |
| Y=-59 | Maximum | Optimal level |
| Y=-64 | Low | Bedrock: bedrock blocks replace the ore |
Important: diamonds are less likely to generate next to air (air exposure reduction). Veins exposed in caves are partly removed by the world generator. That is why strip mining is more effective than running around caves.
Mining methods
Strip mining at Y=-59
The most efficient method. Dig a corridor at Y=-59 (feet at -59, head at -58). Dig straight ahead, exposing the blocks on both sides and under your feet. Every 2 blocks you can dig side branches 20-30 blocks long in each direction. That is branch mining, a version of strip mining with side branches.
Branch mining
A variant of strip mining. A main corridor with perpendicular branches every 2 blocks. A gap of 2 blocks is optimal: diamond ore appears in veins of 1-10 blocks, so at least 1 block of the vein will be visible from a corridor 2 blocks away.
TNT mining
The fastest method, but an expensive one. Dig a tunnel at Y=-59, place TNT every 5 blocks and detonate it. The explosion exposes a huge number of blocks at once. It takes a lot of gunpowder, so you need a creeper farm.
Cave exploration
Less effective than strip mining (air exposure reduction), but it gives you extra resources along the way. Head down into deep caves (deep dark, dripstone caves) and look for exposed veins on the walls. Watch out for the Warden in the Deep Dark: the noise of mining attracts it.
Fortune III: how many diamonds per block?
The Fortune enchantment on a pickaxe increases the number of diamonds you get from a single ore block:
| Enchantment | Average drop | Max drop |
|---|---|---|
| No enchantment | 1.0 | 1 |
| Fortune I | 1.33 | 2 |
| Fortune II | 1.75 | 3 |
| Fortune III | 2.20 | 4 |
Fortune III more than doubles your diamonds. If you find a diamond ore and don't have Fortune III yet, mark the location and come back with the right pickaxe. It is also worth using Silk Touch to collect ore blocks and then break them with a Fortune III pickaxe at your base.
What diamonds are used for
Diamonds are needed for:
- Diamond tools: pickaxe, sword, axe, shovel, hoe - the fastest tools before netherite
- Diamond armor: helmet (5), chestplate (8), leggings (7), boots (4) - 24 diamonds for a full set
- Enchanting table: 2 diamonds + 4 obsidian + 1 book
- Jukebox: 8 planks + 1 diamond
- Netherite upgrade: diamond tools/armor + a netherite ingot at a smithing table
Priority for spending diamonds: 1) pickaxe (to mine obsidian), 2) enchanting table, 3) full armor, 4) sword, 5) the rest of the tools.
Deepslate diamond ore
Below Y=0 stone turns into deepslate, and regular diamond ore becomes deepslate diamond ore. It works the same way: it gives the same diamonds and reacts to Fortune and Silk Touch identically. The only difference is that the deepslate variant takes longer to mine.
Since the optimal level of Y=-59 is deep in the deepslate zone, practically all the diamonds you mine will be the deepslate variant.
Practical tips
- Always keep a stack of torches: darkness at Y=-59 means mob spawns that will interrupt your mining.
- Bring a bucket of water: lava is very common at these depths. One water bucket can save your life and your diamonds.
- Use an iron pickaxe at minimum: wooden and stone pickaxes can't mine diamonds (the block breaks without dropping anything).
- On servers with an economy: Silk Touch on one pickaxe and Fortune III on another. Collect ore blocks with Silk Touch, then mine them with Fortune III at your base.
- Don't dig down beneath yourself: lava at Y=-59 turns up regularly. Dig forward and watch the ground under your feet.
