Invisible item frame command

An invisible item frame is a variant of the regular item frame where the frame itself is transparent and only the item inside it shows. The result is items that "float" on a wall or block with no visible mount. It's one of the best decorating tricks in Minecraft, and it takes just one command.

Command: Java Edition

In Minecraft Java Edition (versions up to 1.20.4), you get an invisible frame with this command:

/give @s minecraft:item_frame{EntityTag:{Invisible:1b}}

The command gives you a frame that is completely transparent once you place it on a wall or block. The item inside stays visible: the frame just acts as an invisible "holder".

Requirements: you need operator (op) permissions, or you have to play in Creative mode with cheats enabled. On a multiplayer server you need admin rights or the right permission level. For more on enabling commands, see the cheats guide.

New format (1.20.5+)

Starting with version 1.20.5, Minecraft Java Edition switched to data components, replacing the old NBT tags with a new format that uses square brackets. The new syntax:

/give @s minecraft:item_frame[entity_data={id:"minecraft:item_frame",Invisible:1b}]

If you play on version 1.20.5 or newer (including 1.21.x), use this format. The old curly-brace format may not work or may show a warning about outdated syntax.

Which version?

Not sure which version you're on? Press F3 in the game and you'll see the version number in the top left corner. Versions 1.20.5, 1.21, 1.21.1 and newer use the new format. Versions 1.20.4 and older use the old one.

Invisible glow item frame

Since version 1.17, Minecraft has the Glow Item Frame, which lights up the item inside even in the dark. You can combine both effects, invisibility and glow:

Old format (up to 1.20.4)

/give @s minecraft:glow_item_frame{EntityTag:{Invisible:1b}}

New format (1.20.5+)

/give @s minecraft:glow_item_frame[entity_data={id:"minecraft:glow_item_frame",Invisible:1b}]

The result: the item floats on the wall, lit up, with no frame in sight. It looks like a hologram. It looks especially good in dark rooms, with lit-up tools, weapons or blocks against a dark deepslate wall.

Bedrock Edition

In Minecraft Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile) there is no direct equivalent of the command with the Invisible tag. Vanilla Bedrock has no invisible item frames, and the only solutions are behavior packs or modifications made with world editors.

Note: Bedrock Edition changes between versions. Check the changelog for your version if something doesn't work as described. On Bedrock servers, an administrator can install a behavior pack that adds invisible frames.

Decorative uses

Invisible frames are a powerful decorating tool. Here are a few ideas players use on servers and in singleplayer:

Floating items on shelves

Place stairs on a wall as "shelves", then put invisible frames with items on them (or next to them). The effect: books, potions and tools "lie" on the shelves with no visible frame. It looks much better than regular frames with their wooden border.

Information boards

An invisible frame with a map on a wall shows the map with no border, creating the illusion of a "pinned" map. Several maps side by side make one big wall map with no gaps between the frames.

Table and countertop decor

An invisible frame on a block (for example, a table made of fences) with a plate, a cup or some food. The item "sits" on the table naturally, with no frame standing out from the tabletop.

Fake blocks and traps

Put a block in an invisible frame on a wall. From a distance it looks like a normal block in the wall, but it's thin (2D). On adventure maps and in PvP, it's a way to make hidden passages and optical illusions.

Weapon and armor museum

Display weapons on gallery walls: swords, bows and tridents "hang" with no visible mounts. With glow frames, the items shine even in dimly lit halls.
