Mangrove Swamp
Tropical swamps with mangrove trees, mud and a warm atmosphere straight out of equatorial wetlands.
What is the mangrove swamp?
The mangrove swamp is a biome added in 1.19 (The Wild Update). It is a warmer, more tropical variant of the classic swamp, with a brand-new type of tree: the mangrove. These trees grow on roots rising out of the water, forming a dense canopy over shallow water and mud.
Visually it's one of the prettiest biomes in the game. Green mangrove leaves, dense roots sunk in the water, mud instead of dirt and warm, saturated colors create a landscape inspired by real mangrove forests. In terms of resources, the biome introduced two entirely new blocks: mangrove wood (with red planks) and mud.
Mud is more than decoration. You can turn it into packed mud and then into mud bricks, a new building material with a warm, brick-like look. That makes the mangrove swamp a valuable biome for builders looking for new textures.
Generation and location
Mangrove swamps generate in the warm zones of the world, often next to jungles, deserts and regular swamps. They don't generate next to cold biomes like the taiga or the tundra. The terrain is extremely flat: most of the biome sits at Y=62-63, with a layer of mud and shallow water.
Compared with classic swamps, mangrove swamps are denser in vegetation. Mangrove roots form a tangle of blocks that is hard to push through. Getting around by boat is possible, but it takes some weaving between the roots. The command /locate biome minecraft:mangrove_swamp will point you to the nearest one.
Mobs
Warm frog
The mangrove swamp is a warm zone, so tadpoles that grow up here become white frogs (the warm variant). White frogs that eat small magma cubes drop a pearlescent froglight. Feed frogs slimeballs to breed them.
Slime
As in classic swamps, slimes spawn on the surface at night. Shallow water and mud don't block their spawning. A slime farm in a mangrove swamp works exactly like one in a regular swamp.
Tropical fish
Tropical fish of various colors spawn in the water of mangrove swamps, the only swamp biome that offers them. You can catch them with a fishing rod or scoop them up with a bucket. A bucket of tropical fish makes an interesting decorative item.
Standard mobs
Witches, zombies, skeletons and creepers at night.
Resources and unique blocks
Mangrove wood
A new type of wood with characteristic red planks. It gives you a full set of blocks: planks, stairs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs and a boat. The plank color is warmer than other woods, which makes it great for tropical or rustic builds.
Mud
A new ground block. You can get it by using a water bottle on dirt. Mud + wheat = packed mud. Packed mud can be crafted into mud bricks, a new building block with its own set of stairs, walls and slabs.
Mangrove roots
A see-through, wood-like block that lets water pass through. You can use it to let water flow through decorative builds. A muddy variant also exists (muddy mangrove roots), another decorative block.
Mangrove propagule
A mangrove sapling hanging under the leaves like a stalactite. You can collect it and plant it on a block of mud, dirt or clay, even underwater. It grows into a full mangrove tree. Bone meal speeds up the growth of propagules, both those hanging on trees and planted ones.
Tips for players
Getting around
Mangrove roots form a maze. A boat helps on open water, but between the roots you have to go on foot. An axe, ideally enchanted with Efficiency, breaks roots quickly. Alternatively, hop across the roots like platforms.
Making mud
You don't have to look for mud in the biome, you can make it yourself. Use a water bottle on any block of dirt and it turns into mud. That means an unlimited supply of mud bricks without having to dig in a mangrove swamp.
Mangrove farm
You can farm propagules: plant them, use bone meal, chop down the tree, then collect new propagules from the leaves. Mangrove wood is renewable and efficient for mass production.
A base on stilts
Mangrove swamps are ideal for a tropical-style base: build a platform on the mangrove roots above the water. Use mangrove planks and trapdoors for stylish balconies. You'll find building inspiration in our building section.
Bee farming bonus
Mangrove trees can generate with bee nests, which makes this biome useful for collecting honey and honeycomb. Bee nests on mangroves are a quick way to start a bee farm.
Big dripleaf as a trap
Although dripleaf grows naturally in caves, you can plant it on a block of mud. A big dripleaf tilts down after you stand on it for a moment, which is handy for building simple mob traps or parkour.

Trivia
- Mangrove swamps were added in 1.19 (The Wild Update), together with a new type of tree.
- The mangrove propagule is the only sapling in the game that grows hanging from leaves. It grows downward like a stalactite.
- You make mud by using a water bottle on a dirt block: it needs neither crafting nor a furnace.
- Mangrove roots let water pass through, which makes them handy for building aquariums and fountains.
- Mangrove trees can grow both on land and in water, which very few trees can do.
- Mud bricks have a unique texture reminiscent of adobe, a traditional building material made of dried clay and straw, used in warm climates for thousands of years.
