Minecraft Superflat world generator: online layer editor
A Superflat world in Minecraft is a special world type where the whole world is made of uniform, horizontal layers of blocks. Instead of mountains, caves and oceans you get a perfectly flat surface, which is ideal for building, testing redstone, making adventure maps and running survival challenges. Our Superflat world generator lets you design your own layer stack, pick a biome, enable structures and copy a ready-made preset string to paste into the game.
The tool includes 80+ blocks sorted into categories, 40+ biomes, 13 structure types and 8 ready-made presets to start from, all with a live cross-section preview of your layers. It runs entirely in your browser, so there is nothing to download or install.
The biome affects grass and leaf color, mob spawns, weather and structure generation.
Copy the text below and paste it into the preset code box: World Type → Superflat → Customize → Presets, then click Use Preset.
How to use the Superflat generator
Using it is simple:
- Pick a preset. Click one of the 8 ready-made presets (Classic Flat, Tunnelers' Dream, Water World and so on) to load its setup. You can change anything afterwards.
- Edit the layers. Add, remove and reorder layers. Each layer has a block type (from the dropdown) and a height (the number of blocks). Layers are stacked from the bottom (bedrock) to the top (grass). Use the arrows to move layers.
- Choose a biome. The biome affects grass color, mob spawns, weather and the types of structures that generate (for example desert vs. taiga villages).
- Enable structures. Tick the structures you want to generate: villages, strongholds, mineshafts, dungeons, pyramids and more.
- Copy the preset string. Click "Copy preset string" and paste it in the game: Create New World → World Type → Superflat → Customize → Presets.
What a Superflat world is
Superflat is an alternative world type available since Minecraft Java Edition 1.1 (January 2012). Unlike a standard world, which generates complex terrain with mountains, rivers, biomes and caves, a Superflat world builds a perfectly flat surface out of configurable layers of blocks. The default setup is one layer of bedrock, two layers of dirt and one layer of grass, a total of 4 blocks of height above the void.
Superflat was added first of all as a tool for creators: testing redstone, building without terrain getting in the way, and making adventure maps and minigames. Over time it also became a popular mode for survival challenges. Surviving on a flat world is surprisingly hard because there are no trees, ores, caves or natural shelter.
How to paste a preset in the game
After copying the preset string from the generator, do the following in Minecraft Java Edition:
- Open the game and choose Singleplayer → Create New World
- Set World Type to Superflat
- Click Customize
- Click Presets
- Paste the copied preset string (Ctrl+V) into the preset code box
- Click Use Preset: the layers and biome are loaded
- Click Done, then Create New World
Keep in mind that the preset string works only in Java Edition. Bedrock Edition has limited customization for Flat worlds and doesn't support text presets.
Preset descriptions
Classic Flat
The default Minecraft preset: 1 layer of bedrock, 2 layers of dirt, 1 layer of grass. Generates villages. It is the most commonly used preset: simple, fast and perfect for quick testing. Total height: 4 blocks.
Tunnelers' Dream
230 layers of stone above bedrock, topped with dirt and grass. Great for digging tunnels, testing mines and exploring underground. Generates strongholds, abandoned mineshafts and dungeons. Total height: 237 blocks.
Water World
A deep ocean over a stone floor: 90 layers of water on top of sand, dirt and stone. Generates ocean monuments with guardians. Great for building underwater bases and testing underwater breathing. Total height: 106 blocks.
Overworld
Simulates typical Overworld terrain: bedrock, deepslate, stone, dirt and grass. Generates villages, strongholds, mineshafts and dungeons. A good compromise: flat terrain, but with a typical depth to dig. Total height: 65 blocks.
Snowy Kingdom
Stone covered with dirt, snow and packed ice. The Snowy Plains biome brings permanent winter and snowfall. Generates snowy villages. Total height: 28 blocks.
Bottomless Pit
A thin layer of cobblestone, dirt and grass with no bedrock, and the void waiting underneath. One mistake while digging and you fall to your death. Very popular as a survival challenge. Total height: 6 blocks.
Desert
Sand and sandstone over stone with bedrock. The desert biome means no rain, desert villages and pyramids with TNT traps. Total height: 39 blocks.
Redstone Ready
116 layers of sandstone over stone and bedrock. No structures: a clean canvas for building redstone contraptions. Sandstone doesn't fall under gravity (unlike sand), so it makes an ideal base. Total height: 120 blocks.
Biomes in Superflat: what affects what
Choosing a biome matters in a Superflat world even though the terrain is flat. The biome affects:
- Grass and leaf color: taiga has grayish-green grass, badlands a yellowish tint
- Mob spawns: ocelots and parrots appear in jungles, desert rabbits in deserts, and mooshrooms in Mushroom Fields (with no hostile mobs at all)
- Weather: deserts get no rain or snow, and snowy biomes get snowfall instead of rain
- Village type: villages adapt their building materials to the biome (sandstone in the desert, for example)
- Sky and fog color: different biomes have different sky tints, which changes the atmosphere
Best biome for building: Plains: all-round, green grass, normal spawns. Best biome for surviving without mobs: Mushroom Fields: hostile mobs don't spawn naturally. Best biome for a challenge: The Void: no terrain, and you spawn on a small platform.
Structures in Superflat: what to enable
Structures are optional elements that generate in a Superflat world. Each one adds its own challenges and resources:
- Villages: houses, farms, librarians and smiths with chests. A source of food, shelter and trading.
- Strongholds: underground corridors with an End portal.
- Abandoned mineshafts: tunnels with rails, cobwebs and chests. A source of wood (planks) and iron in presets without trees.
- Dungeons: a spawner plus loot chests. Handy for building XP farms.
- Nether fortresses: generate in the Nether (once you go through a portal). A source of blaze rods and nether wart.
- Ocean monuments: generate in presets with a lot of water. Guardians, sponges and prismarine.
- Desert pyramids: TNT traps and loot chests. They generate in desert biomes.
- Ancient cities: sculk, the Warden, and chests with Swift Sneak enchanted books.
- Trial chambers: challenges built around trial spawners and vaults (1.21+).
Superflat challenge: surviving on a flat world
Surviving on a Superflat world is one of the most popular challenges in Minecraft. It is hard because the default preset (Classic Flat) is missing almost everything:
- No trees: you can't get wood the normal way. The only sources are villages (plank houses, fence posts) or trading with a wandering trader (saplings).
- No ores: no iron, diamonds, gold or coal. The only sources are chests in villages, mineshafts and strongholds, and trading with smiths.
- No caves: there is no natural shelter. You have to find a village fast or dig a hole in the ground (3 layers deep in Classic Flat).
- Slimes: they can spawn on the flat surface, so be ready to fight without a weapon.
- No food at the start: the only sources are village farms (carrots, potatoes, beetroot, wheat) and killing animals.
Despite these limits, an experienced player can take the game all the way from scratch to defeating the Ender Dragon in Superflat. The key steps: find a village → get food and shelter → get iron (from a golem or chests) → build a Nether portal → get blaze rods and ender pearls → find a stronghold → defeat the dragon.
Advanced uses for Superflat
Testing redstone
A Superflat world is an ideal environment for designing redstone contraptions. Flat terrain means you never have to level the ground, and with no caves under the surface your contraptions can't "fall" into empty space. Use the Redstone Ready preset (116 layers of sandstone): sandstone doesn't fall and is easy to clear.
Making adventure maps
Adventure map creators often start with an empty Superflat world and build their own terrain on it. That gives you full control over how the map looks. A popular variant is a preset with nothing but bedrock (1 layer) and Creative mode: you build from scratch on the bedrock.
PvP arenas
Flat terrain is ideal for building PvP arenas, stadiums and battlefields. With no natural cover, fights turn aggressive. On multiplayer servers, Superflat is often used for lobbies, arenas and minigames.
Mob farms
On flat terrain, mob spawns are predictable: the whole surface has the same light level. That makes it easier to design efficient mob farms. With no caves underground, all spawns happen on the surface or in specially built dark rooms.
Superflat vs Void: what's the difference
Besides Superflat, Minecraft offers a Void world: a completely empty world with a single stone platform. No terrain, structures or mobs are generated. Void is meant purely as a clean canvas for building in Creative.
In our generator you can get close to the Void effect by making a preset with one layer of bedrock and the "The Void" biome. That gives you a minimal world with a floor to build on, but without any natural elements.
Preset string format: for developers
In Java Edition, a preset string has the following format:
layers;biome;structures
Layers are separated by commas, from the bottom to the top. Each layer is count*minecraft:block (or just minecraft:block if the layer is 1 block thick). The biome is an ID with the minecraft: prefix. Structures are separated by commas. Example:
minecraft:bedrock,2*minecraft:dirt,minecraft:grass_block;minecraft:plains;village
Our generator builds a valid preset string automatically, so you don't need to know the syntax. But if you want to write presets by hand, the format above will come in handy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a flat world in Minecraft Java Edition?
Go to Create New World, set World Type to Superflat and click Customize. The default preset is 1 layer of bedrock, 2 layers of dirt and 1 layer of grass. To use a preset string from our generator, click Presets, paste the copied text into the preset code box and click Use Preset.
How do I import a Superflat preset in Minecraft?
Copy the preset string from the generator. In the game: Singleplayer → Create New World → World Type → Superflat → Customize → Presets. Paste the copied text (Ctrl+V) into the preset code box and click Use Preset. The preset loads with your layers and biome.
Do villages generate in Superflat worlds?
Yes. Villages generate by default in the Classic Flat preset, and the style of the houses depends on the biome: desert villages in desert biomes, taiga villages in the taiga, and so on.
Which biome should I pick for Superflat?
The biome affects grass color, mob spawns and weather. Plains is the all-round choice: villages, normal spawns and green grass. Deserts have no rain and generate pyramids. Mushroom Fields turn off hostile mob spawns. For building, we recommend Plains or Desert.
Can I have a Superflat world without bedrock?
Yes, just don't add a bedrock layer at the bottom. Keep in mind that without bedrock you fall into the void once you dig through all the layers, and that kills you. The Bottomless Pit preset leaves out bedrock on purpose as a survival challenge.
How many layers can a Superflat world have?
The total height of the layers can't exceed 256 blocks in older versions or 384 blocks in current Java Edition versions (Y -64 to Y 320). Each layer can be 1 to 256 blocks thick.
Does Superflat work in Bedrock Edition?
Bedrock Edition (Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile) offers a Flat world type, but with limited customization. It doesn't support preset strings the way Java Edition does, and detailed layer editing is only available in Java Edition.
What is a Superflat world used for?
Superflat worlds are ideal for testing redstone contraptions (flat terrain with no obstacles), building (a clean canvas with no digging), designing mob farms, making adventure maps and minigames, learning commands and command blocks, testing mods, PvP arenas and survival challenges (no ores, trees or caves).
