Minecraft seed analyzer: slime chunks and tools
Enter a Minecraft seed (a number or text) to see information about it. The slime chunk calculator checks whether a chunk you pick is a slime chunk. Links to Chunkbase and MineAtlas with your seed already filled in let you explore the world map quickly.
How to use the tool
Enter a seed in the field above. It can be a number (for example 12345,
-7849283746) or text (for example minecraft). Click
"Analyze" or press Enter. The tool will show:
- Seed info: the numeric value of the seed, its type (number or text) and an estimated spawn.
- Slime chunks: a calculator that checks whether a given chunk is a slime chunk in your world.
- External tools: links to Chunkbase, MineAtlas and others with your seed filled in.
Slime chunk calculator
Slime chunks are special chunks (16x16 blocks) where slimes can spawn at depths from Y=0 to Y=39. Slime spawning in these chunks does not depend on the moon phase (unlike spawning in swamps), so slimes can show up there at any time, as long as there is room for them.
About 10% of all chunks in a world are slime chunks. Which chunks they are depends only on the world seed. It is worked out by a deterministic algorithm based on Java's pseudo-random number generator (a Linear Congruential Generator).
Slime chunk algorithm
In Java Edition, the game builds a pseudo-random seed from the world seed and the chunk
coordinates (cx, cz), feeds it into Java's random number generator and calls
nextInt(10). If the result is 0, the chunk is a slime chunk.
The calculator is built for Java Edition. Bedrock Edition uses a different slime spawning mechanism, so the results do not apply to Bedrock.
How to build a slime farm
Once you find a slime chunk, you can build an efficient slime farm:
- Dig a large room (at least 3 blocks high) at Y=0-39 inside a slime chunk.
- Light the floor with torches (light level 7+) to stop other mobs from spawning.
- Wait at least 24 blocks away from the farm. Slimes spawn 24-128 blocks from the player.
- Collect the slimeballs. They are used to craft sticky pistons, leads and slime blocks.
Text seeds vs numeric seeds
Minecraft accepts both numbers and text as a seed. When you type text (for example
"minecraft", "poland" or "my world"), the game converts it to a number with the
Java String.hashCode() function. Each text gives a number that is unique
apart from rare collisions, and that number becomes the world seed.
Our tool automatically detects whether you entered a number or text. If you entered text, it shows both the original text and the number you get after the hashCode conversion. You can use that number directly as the seed in the game, and the result will be identical.
External tools for exploring seeds
A full seed analysis (biomes, structures, caves) needs a simulation of the whole world generation algorithm. Our tool links to the best external services:
- Chunkbase Seed Map: an interactive map of biomes, structures and slime chunks. One of the most accurate and most popular tools in the community.
- Chunkbase Slime Finder: slime chunks shown on a map.
- Chunkbase Dungeon Finder: locates dungeons (spawners) in the world.
- Chunkbase Stronghold Finder: finds strongholds, which hold the End portals.
- Chunkbase Village Finder: a map of the villages for a given seed.
- MineAtlas: a simpler alternative to Chunkbase that shows biomes and structures.
All the links in the "External tools" tab have your seed filled in automatically, so you don't have to copy it by hand.
Frequently asked questions
What is a seed in Minecraft?
A seed is a number that determines how the whole world is generated: biomes, structures, caves, ores and terrain. The same seed in the same game version always generates an identical world. You can type a seed in by hand when you create a new world, or check it with the /seed command.
What is a slime chunk?
A slime chunk is a chunk (16x16 blocks) where slimes can spawn at depths of Y=0-39. About 10% of chunks are slime chunks. Which ones they are depends on the world seed.
How do you check whether a chunk is a slime chunk?
You need the seed and the chunk coordinates. Our tool runs the calculation for you. Enter the seed, open the "Slime chunks" tab and enter the chunk coordinates.
How do you find a chunk's coordinates?
Divide a block coordinate (X or Z) by 16 and round down. For example, block X=50 is chunk X=3 and block X=-10 is chunk X=-1. In the game press F3 and look for the chunk coordinates on the "Chunk" line.
Does the calculator work for Bedrock Edition?
The slime chunk calculator implements the Java Edition algorithm. Bedrock Edition uses a different slime spawning mechanism, so the results will not be correct for Bedrock.
Can I enter text as a seed?
Yes. Minecraft converts text to a number with hashCode(). Our tool does the same and shows you the resulting number. The text "minecraft" and its hashCode give an identical world.
