Minecraft materials calculator: how many blocks do you need?

Planning a big build in Minecraft starts with working out how many materials you need. Counting blocks by hand for a 50x20 wall or a dome 30 blocks across is a recipe for mistakes and frustration. Our materials calculator does it for you: enter the shape and dimensions of your build, and the tool works out the exact number of blocks, stacks, shulker boxes and the raw resources needed for crafting.

The calculator supports 9 shapes, from a plain box through spheres and cylinders to pyramids and domes. For each material (23 are available) it shows how many raw resources you need to mine and how long that takes in Survival mode.

How to use the materials calculator

  1. Pick a shape - click one of the 9 shapes: solid or hollow box, sphere, hollow sphere, cylinder, pyramid, wall, floor or dome.
  2. Enter the dimensions - type in the width, height and depth in blocks. For spheres and cylinders the diameter is enough (plus the height for a cylinder).
  3. Choose a material - the list of 23 materials is grouped into categories: stone, wood, glass, metal, Nether, concrete and others.
  4. Read the result - you will see the total number of blocks, stacks (64 each) and shulker boxes (1,728 each), plus a table of raw resources and the estimated mining time.

Available shapes

Solid box

The simplest shape: multiply width x height x depth. Useful for estimating materials for foundations, fills and massive structures. Formula: W x H x D.

Hollow box

A building with an empty interior: walls, floor and ceiling 1 block thick. The calculator subtracts the interior from the solid box: W x H x D - (W-2) x (H-2) x (D-2). If any dimension is 2 or less, the result is the same as a solid box.

Sphere and hollow sphere

Spheres are calculated with the voxel method: the algorithm checks every block in the bounding box and marks the blocks whose center falls inside the sphere. A hollow sphere has a shell 1 block thick. Spheres are handy for building planets, balloons, TNT bombs and decorative pieces.

Cylinder

A circle of the given diameter extruded to the given height. Ideal for towers, silos, columns and chimneys. The base formula is pi x r^2 x H, but the calculator counts exact voxels.

Pyramid

A pyramid with a square base that shrinks linearly with each layer up to the top. Great for Egyptian pyramids, roofs and monuments. Each layer is a square whose side is proportional to the remaining height.

Wall and floor

Flat shapes 1 block thick. A wall is width x height, a floor is width x depth. Useful for quickly working out materials for walls, fences, platforms and flooring.

Dome

The top half of a hollow sphere, with a shell 1 block thick. Ideal for cathedral roofs, observatories, igloos and bases. Build it layer by layer, using the circle generator to read off the grid for each layer.

Conversions: stacks and shulker boxes

In Minecraft, one stack is 64 blocks, which is what fits in a single inventory slot. A shulker box has 27 slots, so it holds 1,728 blocks. With these numbers it is easy to estimate how many inventory slots or shulker boxes you need to prepare before building.

Resources: where to get materials in bulk

Stone and cobblestone

The easiest material to get in large amounts. Build a cobblestone generator (lava + water) and mine it with a pickaxe with Efficiency V and Unbreaking III: you will dig thousands of blocks in minutes. Smelt cobblestone into stone, then craft stone into stone bricks (4 stone = 4 bricks).

Wood

A tree farm using bone meal or an automatic bamboo farm will supply unlimited amounts of wood. 1 log = 4 planks, so for 1,000 planks you need only 250 logs.

Sand and glass

You will find sand in deserts and on beaches. Digging with a shovel with Efficiency V is very fast. Smelt sand into glass (1:1, 8 blocks per 1 coal). For a large glass build it is worth having several furnaces.

Concrete

Craft concrete powder from 4 sand + 4 gravel + 1 dye (this makes 8 blocks). Then place the powder next to water to turn it into a solid concrete block. Concrete builds need a lot of sand and gravel, so it is worth digging in a desert with an Efficiency V shovel.

Nether materials

Quartz, nether bricks and blackstone require a trip to the Nether. Build a safe route from the portal to your mining spot. Netherrack breaks extremely fast even with a wooden pickaxe.

Estimating time: how to plan big projects

The calculator gives an estimated mining and crafting time. These values assume Survival mode with unenchanted diamond tools. In practice the time can be much shorter thanks to:

For mega builds (100,000+ blocks) it is worth building the infrastructure first: a cobblestone farm, a tree farm, a bank of furnaces and a sorting system. Investing 2-3 hours in automation saves dozens of hours of manual digging.

Build planning tips

Always add a 10-15% margin

The calculator gives the exact number of blocks, but in practice you will always use more: building mistakes, design changes along the way, natural losses. A good rule: prepare 110-115% of the calculated amount.

Test at a small scale

Before starting a mega project, build a miniature model at 1:4 or 1:8 scale. You can check proportions, material choices and colors at a fraction of the cost. Only after you approve the model should you gather the full amount of resources.

Combine shapes

Realistic builds are combinations of simple shapes. A tower is a cylinder + a dome. A house is a box + a pyramid (the roof). Calculate the materials for each element separately and add them up. The calculator lets you switch between shapes quickly.

Use shulker boxes for transport

One shulker box holds 1,728 blocks, the equivalent of 27 inventory slots. For a build that needs 10,000 blocks you need only 6 shulker boxes instead of 157 loose stacks. Fill the shulker boxes at your base and carry them to the build site.

Frequently asked questions

How many blocks do I need for a 10x10x5 house in Minecraft?

A solid 10x10x5 box takes 500 blocks (7 stacks and 52 blocks). For a hollow house (walls, floor and ceiling only) you need 500 - 8x3x8 = 308 blocks. Use the materials calculator to get the exact number for any dimensions and shape.

How many stacks fit in a shulker box?

A shulker box holds 27 stacks, which is 1,728 blocks (27 x 64). It is the standard way to carry large amounts of materials in Minecraft. The calculator works out the number of shulker boxes you need automatically.

How do I calculate the number of blocks for a sphere in Minecraft?

A sphere in Minecraft is a voxel approximation: the algorithm checks every block in a cube whose side equals the diameter and marks the blocks whose center lies inside the sphere. A sphere 20 blocks across takes about 4,189 blocks. A hollow sphere (1-block shell) of the same diameter takes about 1,194 blocks.

How many stone bricks do I need for a 50x10 wall?

A 50x10 wall takes 500 stone bricks (7 stacks and 52 blocks). For crafting you need 500 cobblestone (smelted into stone, then crafted into stone bricks) and about 63 coal as furnace fuel.

How fast can I mine materials for a big build?

It depends on the material and your tools. Tough materials like obsidian (9.4 seconds per block with a diamond pickaxe) or iron blocks (which need smelting) take much longer than cobblestone. The calculator estimates the total time, including mining, smelting and crafting.

How do I build a dome in Minecraft?

A dome is the top half of a hollow sphere. Pick the Dome shape in the calculator, set the diameter (for example 20 blocks) and read off the number of blocks you need. Build it in layers from the bottom: each layer is a circle with a shrinking diameter. Use the circle generator to get the grid for each layer.
