What banners (flags) are in Minecraft
Banners are decorative blocks introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.8. They are tall, narrow flags measuring 1x2 blocks that you can place on the ground, hang on a wall or put on a shield. Every banner has a base color (one of the 16 dye colors) and optional pattern layers, up to 6 in both editions of the game.
Banners don't block movement: players and mobs can walk through them freely. They have many uses: decorating buildings, marking guild territory, making national flags, customizing shields and marking places on a map.
How to make a banner: crafting step by step
Making a banner takes two steps:
- Craft a blank banner - at a crafting table, place 6 wool of the same color in the top two rows (2 rows of 3 slots) and 1 stick in the bottom middle slot. The wool color sets the banner's base color.
- Apply patterns at a loom - the loom is a workstation block (recipe: 2 planks + 2 string). Put the banner in the first slot and a dye in the second, choose a pattern from the list and take the finished banner.
Special banner patterns and how to get them
Some patterns need a special item placed in the third slot of the loom:
- Creeper face - crafted from paper + a creeper head
- Skull and crossbones - crafted from paper + a wither skeleton skull
- Flower (oxeye daisy) - crafted from paper + an oxeye daisy
- Mojang logo (Thing) - crafted from paper + an enchanted golden apple
- Globe - bought from a cartographer for emeralds
- Piglin snout (Snout) - loot from chests in bastion remnants in the Nether
16 dye colors
Minecraft has 16 dyes for coloring banners. Here is a short list of where each one comes from:
- White - bone meal or lily of the valley
- Orange - orange tulip, or red + yellow dye
- Magenta - allium, or purple + pink dye
- Light blue - blue orchid, or blue + white dye
- Yellow - dandelion or sunflower
- Lime - smelted cactus + white dye
- Pink - pink tulip, or red + white dye
- Gray - black + white dye
- Light gray - oxeye daisy, white tulip, or gray + white dye
- Cyan - blue + green dye
- Purple - red + blue dye
- Blue - lapis lazuli or cornflower
- Brown - cocoa beans
- Green - cactus smelted in a furnace
- Red - poppy, red tulip or beetroot
- Black - ink sac or wither rose
Flag design tips
Layer order matters
Layers are applied from the bottom up, and the last layer covers the ones before it. In the game you can't change the order once a layer is applied, so our generator lets you rearrange layers freely before you move the design into Minecraft.
Contrasting colors
A banner with low-contrast colors (for example yellow on lime) is hard to read from a distance. Light patterns on dark backgrounds work best, like a white cross on a red background or a yellow diamond on black.
Banners on shields
You can put a banner on a shield by combining the two items at a crafting table. Personalize your gear with your guild's crest.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a flag in Minecraft?
Craft a banner at a crafting table from 6 wool of the same color in the top two rows and 1 stick in the bottom middle. Then apply patterns at a loom: put in the banner, a dye and, optionally, a special banner pattern to get the design you want.
How many pattern layers can you put on a banner?
Up to 6 layers in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Each layer is one pattern in one dye color. The flag generator enforces this limit automatically and won't let you add more than 6 layers.
How do I make a country flag in Minecraft?
Many flags need only a base color and one or two pattern layers. For example, the flag of Poland is a red banner with a single white top half: craft a red banner (6 red wool + a stick), then apply the top half pattern (half_horizontal) in white at a loom. In the generator, click the "Flag of Poland" preset to load it. The "Flag of Ukraine" preset works the same way.
How do I copy a flag with the /give command?
The generator builds a /give command with your banner's patterns for Java Edition. Copy it with the Copy button and paste it into the Minecraft chat. It requires operator permissions.
How do I get special banner patterns?
Special patterns are crafting items: Creeper (paper + creeper head), skull (paper + wither skeleton skull), flower (paper + oxeye daisy), Mojang (paper + enchanted golden apple), globe (from a cartographer, for emeralds) and piglin snout (in chests in bastion remnants).
Can I put a banner on a shield?
Yes. Combine the banner and the shield at a crafting table, and the shield takes on the banner's pattern. It's a great way to personalize your gear.
