How fireworks work in Minecraft

Firework rockets are among the most customizable items in Minecraft. Each rocket has two parts: the rocket itself (paper + gunpowder) and the firework stars that define how the explosion looks. A rocket without stars simply flies up and disappears, with no spectacular explosion.

The firework system is surprisingly deep. You control the explosion shape (5 types), the colors (16 dyes, up to 8 colors per star), the fade colors (the colors the explosion changes into after it goes off), the trail effect (particles behind each star) and the twinkle effect (flashing after the explosion). One rocket can hold up to 7 stars, and each one explodes at the same moment with its own settings.

Fireworks are not just decoration. They have two key mechanical uses: elytra flight (a rocket speeds the player up in the air) and crossbow ammo (a firework with stars deals damage when it hits).

Crafting fireworks: the recipe step by step

Step 1: Firework star

You craft a star on a crafting table from these ingredients:

  • Gunpowder (1) - required
  • Dye (1-8) - sets the explosion colors
  • Shape material (optional):
    • No material = small ball
    • Fire charge = large ball
    • Gold nugget = star
    • Mob head (any) = Creeper face
    • Feather = burst
  • Diamond (optional) - adds the trail effect
  • Glowstone dust (optional) - adds the twinkle effect

Once you have a star, you can combine it with dyes again to add fade colors. These are the colors the explosion changes into after it goes off.

Step 2: Firework rocket

You craft the rocket from:

  • Paper (1) - required
  • Gunpowder (1-3) - sets the flight duration (1 = low, 3 = high)
  • Firework stars (0-7) - each one adds a separate explosion

The 5 explosion shapes compared

Each explosion shape looks different and suits a different job. Here is the full comparison:

  • Small ball - the default shape, no extra material needed. A compact, round explosion. Great for dense shows where lots of small explosions build a cascade effect.
  • Large ball - needs a fire charge. A much bigger explosion radius than the small ball. The showiest choice for a standalone firework. Looks great with several colors and a fade effect.
  • Star - needs a gold nugget. An explosion in the shape of a five-pointed star. Very decorative, but harder to see from a distance than the large ball.
  • Creeper face - needs any mob head. An explosion in the shape of a creeper's face. A unique effect you cannot get any other way. A great gag on servers and in themed shows.
  • Burst - needs a feather. Particles fly out from the center, creating a "fan" effect.

Fireworks as crossbow ammo

Since version 1.14, fireworks can be used as crossbow ammo. Just load the crossbow with a firework instead of an arrow and fire. The firework flies in a straight line and explodes when it hits a block, a mob or a player.

Damage: every firework star on the rocket adds to the damage, so more stars means a harder hit.

Note: fireworks without stars (just paper + gunpowder) deal no damage at all. They need at least one star. Star colors and effects do not affect the damage, only the number of stars counts.

PvP strategy: a rocket with 7 stars does the most damage, but it is also expensive to make (7 gunpowder for the stars plus extra materials). In PvP it pays to keep a stock of cheaper rockets with 3-4 stars for regular fights and a few premium rockets with 7 stars for the decisive clashes.

Fireworks and elytra flying

The elytra (wings found in End Cities) lets a player glide. Fireworks work as the "engine": using a rocket in mid-flight gives you a burst of speed. The rocket's flight duration (1-3) affects how strong that boost is and how long it lasts:

  • Flight 1: a short boost, small range
  • Flight 2: a medium boost
  • Flight 3: a long boost, the one used most often

For elytra flying it is best to use rockets without stars. They are cheaper (just paper + 3 gunpowder) and do not damage the player. A rocket with stars explodes and hurts you! So keep separate stacks: plain rockets for flying, rockets with stars for the crossbow and for shows.

Tip: on survival servers it is worth building a gunpowder farm (a creeper farm) and a sugar cane farm (for paper) so you always have a steady supply of rockets for flying. A typical player goes through 20-50 rockets on a longer trip.

Putting on a firework show

Firework shows are a popular attraction on multiplayer servers. Here is how to put on a good one:

  1. Launchers: use dispensers connected to a redstone clock. A dispenser automatically fires a firework placed inside it.
  2. Sequence: connect the dispensers to a delay line (repeaters) so the fireworks go off one after another instead of all at once.
  3. Variety: prepare different rockets: some with a short flight (1) for close-up effects, others with a long flight (3) for the finale.
  4. Music: use note blocks or jukeboxes with music discs to sync the show to music.
  5. Viewing: place the audience 50-100 blocks from the launchers. Too close and the effect is overwhelming. Too far and you lose the detail.

Advanced players can use command blocks with timers to build precise sequences that are impossible to do by hand. The /summon command can launch a firework at any point on the map.

Firework design tips

Color contrast

Not all colors stand out equally against the night sky. Bright, high-contrast colors look best: white, yellow, lime, light blue. Dark colors (black, brown, dark green) are almost invisible and do not work as main explosion colors. Use them as fade colors instead: a transition from bright to dark looks great.

Color combinations

Combinations that work: white + yellow (elegant, classic), red + white + blue (patriotic), green + yellow (festive), purple + magenta + pink (fantasy), orange + yellow + red (fiery). Avoid more than 4 colors per explosion, because the effect turns chaotic.

Trail and twinkle effects

Trail adds long "tails" behind every explosion particle. It looks great, but with lots of particles it can lower FPS on weaker computers. Twinkle makes the particles flash before they disappear. Both together make the most spectacular result, but it is best to limit them to 2-3 explosions per rocket.

Multiple explosions per rocket

Adding several stars to one rocket creates a "bouquet" effect: they all explode at the same moment in the same spot, each with its own shape and colors. This lets you build complex effects that are impossible with a single star, for example a large red ball surrounded by small white balls.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make fireworks in Minecraft?

Fireworks are made in two steps. First craft a firework star from gunpowder + dye + optional materials (diamond = trail, glowstone dust = twinkle, head/fire charge/feather/gold nugget = shape). Then combine the star with paper and gunpowder to get a rocket.

How many colors can one firework have?

One firework star can have up to 8 explosion colors. You can also add fade colors, up to 8 colors that the explosion changes into after it goes off. Each rocket can hold up to 7 stars (explosions).

What explosion shapes exist in Minecraft?

Minecraft has 5 firework explosion shapes: small ball (the default, no extra material), large ball (fire charge), star (gold nugget), creeper face (any mob head) and burst (feather). The shape is set in the firework star recipe.

What are fireworks used for besides decoration?

Fireworks have two important uses besides decoration: flying with an elytra (use a rocket in the air to speed up) and ammo for the crossbow. Fireworks with stars deal damage when they hit from a crossbow. Flight duration affects the range of an elytra flight.

How much damage do fireworks deal from a crossbow?

Damage depends on the number of stars: every star on the rocket adds to it, so more stars means a harder hit. Fireworks without stars deal no damage. Star colors and effects do not change the damage.

How do I use the /give command for fireworks?

Use our generator to create a /give command with full NBT data automatically. Copy the command and paste it into Minecraft chat (Java Edition). It requires operator permissions (/op).

What is the maximum flight duration of a firework?

The maximum flight duration of a rocket is 3 (set by the amount of gunpowder in the recipe: 1-3 gunpowder). A longer flight means a higher explosion and a longer boost with an elytra. Flight duration 3 is the one most often used for elytra flying.

Do fireworks work the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?

The basic mechanics are the same, but the /give command syntax differs between the editions. Our generator produces commands for Java Edition.
